However, for some surface water samples, the measurement of TOC by this method can be unreliable, deviating significantly from the true carbon content. In this study, the performance of the UVP-TOC method has been investigated by comparing the results from the analysis of a variety of aqueous samples that included two kinds of surface water samples and related surface water model substances bovine serum albumin (BSA), sodium alginate (SA), humic acid (HA), tannic acid (TA), benzoic acid (BA) and citric acid (CA), with those from a high-temperature combustion method (elemental analysis); the latter providing the true carbon content value. By comparing the above data, it was found that the UVP-TOC method significantly underestimated the TOC value of the surface water samples, and it was also found that the model components BSA (protein) and HA (humic substances, HS) had a substantial influence on the TOC underestimation, while the SA (polysaccharide), TA (complex organic molecule) and CA/BA (small molecules) had little effect. The results showed that the agglomeration within and between BSA and HA molecules was an important reason for the inaccurate UVP-TOC values of BSA and HA. A further limitation was that for BSA, surfactants (e.g. sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, SDBS) and other surfactant-like substances, foam was formed during the CO2 removal purging process by N2 that seriously interfered with the determination of TOC. The study provides new information and insight into the causes of inaccuracies in the UVP-TOC analysis of surface waters and possible approaches to improve the accuracy.Historically steroid sulfates have been considered predominantly as inactive metabolites. It was later discovered that by cleavage of the sulfate residue by steroid sulfatase (STS), they can be (re-)converted into active forms or into precursors for the local production of active steroids. This sulfatase pathway is now a very active field of research, which has gained considerable interest particularly in connection with the steroid metabolism of human steroid hormone-dependent cancer tissue. In comparison, there is much less information available on the occurrence of the sulfatase pathway in physiological settings, where the targeted uptake of steroid sulfates by specific transporters and their hydrolysis could serve to limit steroid effects to a subgroup of potentially steroid responsive cells. In humans, steroid sulfates of adrenal origin circulate in intriguingly high concentrations throughout most of life. Thus, ample substrate is available for the sulfatase pathway regardless of sex. However, the abundant adrenal output of steroid sulfates is a specific feature of select primates. Compared to humans, in our domestic mammals (dogs, cats, domestic ungulates) and laboratory rodents (mouse, rat) research into the biology of steroid sulfates is still in its infancy and information on the subject has so far been largely limited to punctual observations, which indicate considerable species-specific peculiarities. The aim of this overview is to provide a summary of the relevant information available in the above-mentioned species, predominantly taking into account data on concentrations of steroid sulfates in blood as well as the expression patterns and activities of relevant sulfotransferases and STS.Whether the public feels psychologically safe about intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) is crucial for this new technology to prevail. While researchers have realized the importance of perceived safety, a direct and psychometrically sound measure is still needed. This paper aimed to develop and validate a scale to measure the perceived safety of ICVs. In Study 1, an 8-item scale of the perceived safety was developed based on a literature review and used with a sample from Beijing (n = 373), among the people who are very likely to be the first wave of users. Exploratory factor analysis retained six items and found that a two-dimensional model (three items for cognitive safety and three items for emotional safety) best suited the data. Correlational analyses suggested that the two components may have unique causes and consequences. In Study 2, using a different sample from Shenzhen (n = 352), confirmatory factor analysis consolidated the two-factor model. Further correlational analyses showed that the scale had good criterion-related validity. Across two studies, cognitive safety was related to perceived controllability, the tendency to seek new technologies, ICV driving experience, perceived government support, drive intention and intention to be other road users. Emotional safety was correlated with social support, familiarity, benefit perception, purchase and recommend intention. These results suggest that the scale developed in this study is a useful and reliable tool to measure perceived safety. Implications for future studies and relevant policies are discussed.Rural Americans are substantially more likely to be obese than their urban counterparts.
