Although BaTiO3 is one of the most famous lead-free piezomaterials, it suffers from small spontaneous and low Curie temperature. Chemical pressure, as a mild way to modulate the structures and properties of materials by element doping, has been utilized to enhance the ferroelectricity of BaTiO3 but is not efficient enough. Here, we report a promoted chemical pressure route to prepare high-performance BaTiO3 films, achieving the highest remanent polarization, Pr (100 μC/cm2), to date and high Curie temperature, Tc (above 1000 °C). The negative chemical pressure (∼-5.7 GPa) was imposed by the coherent lattice strain from large cubic BaO to small tetragonal BaTiO3, generating high tetragonality (c/a = 1.12) and facilitating large displacements of Ti. Such negative pressure is especially significant to the bonding states, i.e., hybridization of Ba 5p-O 2p, whereas ionic bonding in bulk and strong bonding of Ti eg and O 2p, which contribute to the tremendously enhanced polarization. The promoted chemical pressure method shows general potential in improving ferroelectric and other functional materials.Rapid identification of a pathogen and the measurement of its antibiotic susceptibility are key elements in the diagnostic process of bacterial infections. Microfluidic technologies offer great control over handling and manipulation of low sample volumes with the possibility to study microbial cultures on the single-cell level. Downscaling the dimensions of cultivation systems directly results in a lower number of bacteria required for antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) and thus in a reduction of the time to result. The developed platform presented in this work allows the reading of pathogen resistance profiles within 2-3 h based on the changes of dissolved oxygen levels during bacterial cultivation. The platform contains hundreds of individual growth chambers prefilled with a hydrogel containing oxygen-sensing nanoprobes and different concentrations of antibiotic compounds. The performance of the developed platform is tested using quality control Escherichia coli strains (ATCC 25922 and ATCC 35218) in response to clinically relevant antibiotics. The results are in agreement with values given in reference guidelines and independent measurements using a clinical AST protocol. Finally, the platform is successfully used for the AST of an E. coli clinical isolate obtained from a patient blood culture.DNA nanotechnology, and DNA computing in particular, has grown extensively over the past decade to end with a variety of functional stable structures and dynamic circuits. However, the use as designer elements of regular DNA pieces, perfectly complementary double strands, has remained elusive. Here, we report the exploitation of CRISPR-Cas systems to engineer logic circuits based on isothermal strand displacement that perform with toehold-free double-stranded DNA. We designed and implemented molecular converters for signal detection and amplification, showing good interoperability between enzymatic and nonenzymatic processes. Overall, these results contribute to enlarge the repertoire of substrates and reactions (hardware) for DNA computing.A novel chemiresistive-type sensor for detecting sub-ppm NO2 has been fabricated using AuPt bimetal-decorated SnSe2 microflowers, which was synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment followed by in situ chemical reduction of the bimetal precursors on the surface of the petals of the microflowers. The as-prepared sensor registers a superior performance in detection of sub-ppm concentration of NO2. Functionalized by the AuPt bimetal, the SnSe2 microflower-based sensor shows a response of approximately 4.62 to 8 ppm NO2 at 130 °C. It is significantly higher than those of the sensors using the pristine SnSe2 (∼2.29) and the modified SnSe2 samples by a single metal, either Au (∼3.03) or Pt (∼3.97). The sensor demonstrates excellent long-term stability, signal repeatability, and selectivity to some typical interfering gaseous species including ammonia, acetone, formaldehyde, ethanol, methanol, benzene, CO2, SO2, and CO. The remarkable improvement of the sensitive characteristics could be induced by the electronic and chemical sensitization and the synergistic effect of the AuPt bimetal. Density functional theory (DFT) is implemented to calculate the adsorption states of NO2 on the sensing materials and thus to possibly reveal the sensing mechanism. The significantly enhanced response of the SnSe2-based sensor decorated with AuPt bimetallic nanoparticles has been found to be possibly caused by the orbital hybridization of O, Au, and Pt atoms leading to the redistribution of electrons, which is beneficial for NO2 molecules to obtain more electrons from the composite material.Drugs containing thiazole and aminothiazole groups are known to generate reactive metabolites (RMs) catalyzed by cytochrome P450s (CYPs). These RMs can covalently modify essential cellular macromolecules and lead to toxicity and induce idiosyncratic adverse drug reactions. Molecular docking and quantum chemical hybrid DFT study were carried out to explore the molecular mechanisms involved in the biotransformation of thiazole (TZ) and aminothiazole (ATZ) groups leading to RM epoxide, S-oxide, N-oxide, and oxaziridine. The energy barrier required for the epoxidation is 13.63 kcal/mol, that is lower than that of S-oxidation, N-oxidation, and oxaziridine formation (14.56, 17.90, and 20.20, kcal/mol respectively). selleck compound The presence of the amino group in ATZ further facilitates all the metabolic pathways, for example, the barrier for the epoxidation reaction is reduced by ∼2.5 kcal/mol. Some of the RMs/their isomers are highly electrophilic and tend to form covalent bonds with nucleophilic amino acids, finally leading to the formation of metabolic intermediate complexes (MICs). The energy profiles of these competitive pathways have also been explored.Zinc sulfide (ZnS) exhibits promise in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of its low operation voltage and high theoretical specific capacity. However, pristine ZnS is not adequate in realizing rapid and robust sodium storage owing to its low reversibility, poor structure stability, and sluggish kinetics. To date, most efforts focus on utilizing carbonaceous incorporation to improve its electrochemical performances. Nevertheless, it remains an arduous challenge for realizing superior rate capability while obtaining stable cycling. Herein, inspired by the crystal structure of hexagonal ZnIn2S4, which possesses an intrinsic layered feature with larger unit-cell volume versus that of ZnS, indium incorporation is thus deployed as an immediate remedy. In/ex situ investigations combined with density functional theory calculations are conducted to reveal the superior kinetics, high reversibility, and good structure stability of ZnIn2S4. Notably, the formed indium-based derivatives during cycling manifest a Na+ (de)intercalation process, thereby exciting a synergetic mechanism to stabilize electrochemical cycling.
