Only 10% of the controls fell asleep regardless of PC. PI did not significantly influence EDS in either group. Multidimensional scaling showed EDS was closely related to PC, PI, pain interference, fatigue, and mood. CONCLUSIONS PC appears to be strongly associated with EDS in SCI. Findings suggest significant sleep benefits may occur in adults with SCI by treating cognitive biases like PC, as well as addressing associated factors like fatigue, pain interference, low mood, and so on.STUDY DESIGN Retrospective descriptive study. OBJECTIVES To determine the incidence and probable etiology of sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) in a sample of males with spinal cord injury (SCI). SETTING Hospital in Toledo, Spain; University-based Genetics laboratory in Madrid, Spain. METHODS Semen collected by vibro-stimulation from 27 males with various levels of spinal cord injury. Classical semen parameters, SDF, leukocytospermia and pro-oxidant capacity were assessed and compared with a cohort of normozoospermic fertile donors (n = 10). RESULTS Males with SCI presented with lower semen quality compared with normozoospermic donors with respect to progressive motility (p = 0.0002), SDF (p  less then  0.00005), pro-oxidant capacity (p = 0.0191) and leukocytospermia (p  less then  0.00005). Although there was no significant correlation between semen quality and time since the lesion occurred, the period of abstinence appeared to be positively correlated with SDF (r = 0.486; p = 0.041). When the semen parameters of males with SCI were categorized based on those with cervical and thoracic lesions, sperm concentration was higher for those with cervical damage (p = 0.0257). Males with complete lesions (AIS A) had ejaculates that were lower in progressive motility (p = 0.0040) than those with incomplete injuries (AIS B-D). CONCLUSIONS Ejaculates of males with SCI have excessively elevated SDF when compared with normozoospermic donors, which is likely to be associated with coincident high levels of leucocytospermia and pro-oxidant capacity. We propose that these phenomena are caused by the accumulation and degeneration of spermatozoa in the cauda epididymidis.BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES TL1A is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that is homologous to TNFα and connected with the development of several chronic inflammatory disorders. The preliminary results of this study indicated reduced fat accumulation in 9-month-old TL1A-deficient mice at steady state. Thus, the objective was to investigate whether TL1A-deficient mice are resistant to the development of high-fat (HF) diet-induced obesity and to investigate the impact on lymphocyte infiltration in adipose tissue. METHODS TL1A-deficient and TL1A-sufficient male BALB/cJ littermate mice were fed a 60% HF diet or a 10% low-fat control diet for 22 weeks. Mouse body composition and weight were monitored, and tissues were processed and evaluated by flow cytometry, qPCR, and histology. RESULTS In this study, the TL1A-deficient HF-diet-fed mice had reduced whole-body weight gain, which was directly explained by a corresponding fat mass reduction (average 37.2%), compared with that of their TL1A-sufficient littermates. The recent outbreaks of Nipah virus (NiV) in India, the highly fatal emerging zoonotic virus is a potential threat to global health security as no anti-viral drug or vaccine in currently available. Therefore, here in the present study, we sought to assess the ability of the putative G-quadruplex forming sequences in the NiV genome to form G-quadruplex structures and act as targets for anti-viral compounds. Bioinformatics analysis underpinned by various biophysical and biochemical techniques (such as NMR, CD, EMSA, DMS footprinting assay) confirmed the presence of two highly conserved G-quadruplex forming sequences (HGQs) in the G and L genes of NiV. These genes encode the cell attachment glycoprotein and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, respectively and are essential for the virus entry and replication within the host cell. It remains possible that stabilization of these HGQs by the known G-quadruplex binding ligands like TMPyP4 and Braco-19 represents a promising strategy to inhibit the expression of the HGQ harboring genes and thereby stop the viral entry and replication inside the host cell. Accordingly, we report for the first time, that HGQs in Nipah virus genome are targets for G-quadruplex specific ligands; therefore, could serve as potential targets for anti-viral therapy.We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess how a patient's posture affects intraocular gas changes and whether the postoperative prone position is required after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with gas tamponade for rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs). Eight patients with RRDs who underwent PPV combined with cataract surgery with gas tamponade were prospectively included. They underwent MRI examination both in the prone and supine positions. We separated the retina into four parts superior-posterior, superior-anterior, inferior-posterior, and inferior-anterior. find protocol We then calculated the gas contact rate as (the length of the retina contacting the gas in each retinal part) divided by (the length of each retinal part) × 100% in both the prone and supine positions. The mean gas contact rate of the superior-anterior part of the retina was significantly higher (P = 0.006) in the supine position than in the prone position. The mean gas contact rate of the inferior-anterior part of the retina was also significantly higher (P = 0.0004) in the supine position than in the prone position. We believe that if all retinal breaks were located anterior to the equator, the supine position may provide better tamponade gas coverage for the breaks than the prone position. Although potential postoperative complications caused by the supine position require careful attention, our result may shorten the duration of postoperative prone position and may decrease the patients' discomfort after PPV with gas tamponade for RRDs.
