Starvation is one cause of high mortality during the early life stages of many fish species. If larvae do not learn to feed, or if no food is available during early stages, irreversible starvation occurs and larvae reach the Point of No Return (PNR), the developmental period/age when they will not feed even if food is available. Fish larvae may learn to how to feed by observing conspecifics or through personal/individual experience with prey items that are encountered. We examined food acquisition in first-feeding zebrafish larvae to determine the impact of delayed feeding and identify the time of irreversible starvation and the PNR. Next, we examined how feeding ability, and the PNR, is altered by either observational learning or previous experience, to determine which paradigm facilitates successful feeding.Our data indicate that zebrafish larvae learn to feed, with the PNR at 7-8 days postfertilization (dpf). Exposure to prey items immediately after hatching (3-5 dpf) results in the highest survival rates. Zebrafish larvae learning to feed by observing conspecifics also had high survival, though the PNR was not changed. In contrast, previous experience with prey items caused an earlier PNR and reduced survival. Overall, these results that indicate feeding is a learned behavior in zebrafish larvae and interacting with/observing conspecifics during the early larval period is a better predictor of feeding ability than previous experience with food.Failure of passive transfer (FPT) is defined as failure to absorb colostral antibodies sufficient to achieve a serum Immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration >10 g/L. selleck products Immunoglobulin G can be measured directly in calf serum using radial immunodiffusion (RID), or indirectly estimated by measuring total protein (TP). Indirect TP measures are usually favoured because of their relatively lower costs. The aim of this work was to compare TP measurements using refractometry and biuret methods against the reference RID test in neonatal dairy calves, and to assess agreement between these indirect measures. Neither the biuret nor the refractometer method provided a high sensitivity for detection of FPT, as defined by RID. There was no systematic difference between the methods in their estimation of TP, although the biuret method was more accurate than the refractometer method when tested against the reference RID test (accuracy = 83.1 % v 69.3 %) and the refractometer was more likely to overestimate the number of calves with FPT. Specificity for the biuret test was 93.9 % compared with the refractometer specificity of 74.4 %. Mean TP as estimated by the biuret method was higher than the mean TP estimated by the refractometer (6.25 g/dL versus 5.52 g/dL), and the Pearson correlation coefficient for the two assays was only moderate, at 0.58. This suggests that the biuret method is preferable to the refractometer for detecting FPT in calves, despite the superior convenience of the refractometer.Managing the health needs of livestock contributes to reducing poverty and improving the livelihoods of smallholder and pastoralist livestock keepers globally. Animal health practitioners, producers, policymakers, and researchers all must prioritize how to mobilize limited resources. This study employed three approaches to prioritize animal health needs in East and West Africa and South Asia to identify diseases and syndromes that impact livestock keepers. The approaches were a) systematic literature review, b) a series of expert workshops, and c) a practitioner survey of veterinarians and para-veterinary professionals. The top constraints that emerged from all three approaches include endo/ ectoparasites, foot and mouth disease, brucellosis, peste des petits ruminants, Newcastle disease, and avian influenza. Expert workshops additionally identified contagious caprine pleuropneumonia, contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, mastitis, and reproductive disorders as constraints not emphasized in the literature review. Practitioner survey results additionally identified nutrition as a constraint for smallholder dairy and pastoralist small ruminant production. Experts attending the workshops agreed most constraints can be managed using existing veterinary technologies and best husbandry practices, which supports a shift away from focusing on individual diseases and new technologies towards addressing systemic challenges that limit access to veterinary services and inputs. Few research studies focused on incidence/ prevalence of disease and impact, suggesting better incorporation of socio-economic impact measures in future research would better represent the interests of livestock keepers.Vaccination has become a site of professional and social concern, particularly as parents choose not to vaccinate their children. Previous research in medical sociology has considered the role of parents, knowledge, and health beliefs within vaccination debates. Yet, what has been overlooked is the expert construction of ignorance that emerges in conflicts over vaccination. This construction crystallizes in news media coverage of public health crises created by un- or under-vaccinated populations. Drawing on the sociology of science and the social problems tradition, this article performs a comparative case analysis to reveal that experts' status as privileged knowers affords them the capacity to frame ignorance itself. Using a content analysis of two measles outbreaks-one in California at Disneyland and the second among the Amish in Ohio-I show how experts do not simply traffic in objective, knowledge-based claims. Rather, they incorporate moral valences into these claims, which become apparent through their assessments of ignorance. Experts in the news shape the epistemic contours of the debate, calling out Californians as willfully ignorant, while excusing the Amish as unintentionally ignorant. This framing of ignorance is underpinned by the moral culpability of each population and its tractability to policy intervention. More broadly, this study reveals how expertise can be linked with and even supported by assessments of the causes and motivations of ignorance.
