William Adams (Miura Anjin) was an English navigator who sailed with a Dutch trading fleet to the far East and landed in Japan in 1600. He became a vassal under the Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, was bestowed with a title, lands and swords, and became the first SAMURAI from England. "Miura" comes from the name of the territory given to him and "Anjin" means "pilot". He lived out the rest of his life in Japan and died in Hirado, Nagasaki Prefecture, in 1620, where he was reportedly laid to rest. Shortly after his death, graveyards designated for foreigners were destroyed during a period of Christian repression, but Miura Anjin's bones were supposedly taken, protected, and reburied. Archaeological investigations in 1931 uncovered human skeletal remains and it was proposed that they were those of Miura Anjin. However, this could not be confirmed from the evidence at the time and the remains were reburied. In 2017, excavations found skeletal remains matching the description of those reinterred in 1931. We analyzed these remains from various aspects, including genetic background, dietary habits, and burial style, utilizing modern scientific techniques to investigate whether they do indeed belong to the first English SAMURAI.A high infant mortality rate (IMR) indicates a failure to meet people's healthcare needs. The IMR in Lao People's Democratic Republic has been decreasing but still remains high. This study aimed to identify the factors involved in the high IMR by analyzing data from 53,727 live births and 2189 women from the 2017 Lao Social Indicator Survey. The estimated IMR decreased from 191 per 1000 live births in 1978-1987 to 39 in 2017. The difference between the IMR and the neonatal mortality rate had declined since 1978 but did not change after 2009. Factors associated with the high IMR in all three models (forced-entry, forward-selection, and backward-selection) of multivariate logistic regression analyses were auxiliary nurses as birth attendants compared to doctors, male infants, and small birth size compared to average in all 2189 women; and 1-3 antenatal care visits compared to four visits, auxiliary nurses as birth attendants compared to doctors, male infants, postnatal baby checks, and being pregnant at the interview in 1950 women whose infants' birth size was average or large. Maternal and child healthcare and family planning should be strengthened including upgrading auxiliary nurses to mid-level nurses and improving antenatal care quality. There is increasing scientific interest in the potential association between mindfulness and romantic relationship wellbeing. To date, however, experimental studies using active control groups and testing dyadic effects (i.e. examining both actor and partner effects) are lacking. In the current study, romantically involved individuals engaged for 2 weeks daily in either guided mindfulness exercises, or guided relaxation exercises. Participants, and their partners, completed measures of relationship wellbeing at pre- and post-intervention, and at 1-month follow up. The mindfulness intervention significantly promoted relationship wellbeing, for both participants (i.e. actor effects) and their partners (i.e. partner effects). However, these findings did not significantly differ from changes in relationship wellbeing in the relaxation condition. Theoretical implications of these findings for understanding the association between mindfulness and romantic relationship wellbeing are discussed. Moreover, the findings are discussed in light of recent debates about the relative lack of proper control groups in mindfulness research.
Inequity between genders with regards to leadership achievement, compensation, scholarly productivity, and grant funding exist among physicians. This study explores whether similar inequities exist among board certified neonatologists within the USA.
A voluntary anonymous survey was distributed to 3575 members of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine with 560 respondents (15.7% response rate). The survey contained questions assessing clinician characteristics, work environment, compensation, professional productivity, and social factors. Statistical analysis was done using JMP Pro 15.0.0 by SAS.
Female neonatologists, compared to male peers, were less likely to hold leadership positions (OR 0.36, p = 0.005), received lower compensation by an average of $34,916 or 12.47% (p < 0.001), and had 6.71 fewer primary authored publications (p = 0.025) after adjusting for several confounding factors.
Gender remains a significant independent factor influencing leadership attainment, compensation, and academic productivity in this cohort of neonatologists.

Clinically, peptic ulcer patients without helicobacter pylori (HP) infection may provide a population for studying the effect of vagal hyperactivity. There were interests in the association of gastrointestinal disease and urogenital disorders. Herein, we try to investigate subsequent risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in non-HP infected peptic ulcer patients. CFT8634 We identified 17,672 peptic ulcer admission male patients newly diagnosed in 1998-2007 from Taiwan Health Insurance Database, and 17,672 male comparison without peptic ulcer, frequency matched by age, and index-year. We assessed subsequent incidence of BPH in each cohort by the end of 2013, and then compared the risk of developing BPH between individuals with and without peptic ulcer. In addition, peptic ulcer patients underwent surgery were also examined. There were 2954 peptic ulcer patients and 2291 comparisons noted with the occurrence of BPH (25.35 and 16.70 per 1000 person-years, respectively). Compared to comparisons, peptic ulcer patients had a 1.45- and 1.26-fold BPH risk in multivariable Cox model and Fine and Gray model (95% CI 1.37-1.54 and 1.19-1.34). In age-stratified analysis, the highest risk of BPH was in 45-59 years (interaction p less then 0.05). Regarding surgery types, peptic ulcer patients who underwent simple suture surgery (i.e. with integrated vagus nerve) had a significant higher BPH risk than comparison (HR 1.50 and 95% CI 1.33-1.74; SHR 1.26 and 95% CI 1.07-1.48), while patients underwent truncal vagotomy/pyloroplasty showed a lower incidence of BPH. In this study, non-HP-infected male peptic ulcer patients were found to have an increased risk of subsequent BPH. Indicating that there might be a role of vagus nerve. Based on the limitations of retrospective nature, further studies are required.
