To get the most out of the CO2 capture, an as-prepared sample was post-modified using ammonia. Furthermore, a deactivation model (DM) was introduced for the purpose of studying the breakthrough curves. The CO2 adsorption onto CNFCM was experimentally examined under following operating conditions a temperature of 30-50 °C, pressure of 1-2 bar, flow rate of 50-90 mL/min, and CO2 feed amount of 10-40 vol.%. A lower adsorption capacity and shorter breakthrough time were detected by escalating the temperature. On the other hand, the capacity for CO2 adsorption increased by raising the CO2 feed amount, feed flow rate, and operating pressure. The comparative evaluation of CO2 uptake over unmodified and modified CNFCM adsorbents confirmed that the introduced modification procedure caused a substantial improvement in CO2 adsorption.Here, we tested two magnetic-bead based systems for the enrichment and detection of rare tumor cells in concentrated blood products. For that, the defined numbers of cells from three pancreatic cancer cell lines were spiked in 108 peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNCs) concentrated in 1 mL, mimicking diagnostic leukapheresis (DLA) samples, and samples were processed for circulating tumor cells (CTC) enrichment with the IsoFlux or the KingFisher systems, using different types of magnetic beads from the respective technology providers. Beads were conjugated with different anti-EpCAM and MUC-1 antibodies. Recovered cells were enumerated and documented by fluorescent microscopy. For the IsoFlux system, best performance was obtained with IsoFlux CTC enrichment kit, but these beads compromised the subsequent immunofluorescence staining. For the KingFisher system, best recoveries were obtained using Dynabeads Biotin Binder beads. These beads also allowed one to capture CTCs with different antibodies and the subsequent immunofluorescence staining. KingFisher instrument allowed a single and streamlined protocol for the enrichment and staining of CTCs that further prevented cell loss at the enrichment/staining interface. Phleomycin D1 Both IsoFlux and KingFisher systems allowed the enrichment of cell line cells from the mimicked-DLA samples. However, in this particular experimental setting, the recovery rates obtained with the KingFisher system were globally higher, the system was more cost-effective, and it allowed higher throughput.In this work, SiNx/a-Si/SiNx caps on conductive coplanar waveguides (CPWs) are proposed for thin film encapsulation of radio-frequency microelectromechanical systems (RF MEMS), in view of the application of these devices in fifth generation (5G) and modern telecommunication systems. Simplification and cost reduction of the fabrication process were obtained, using two etching processes in the same barrel chamber to create a matrix of holes through the capping layer and to remove the sacrificial layer under the cap. Encapsulating layers with etch holes of different size and density were fabricated to evaluate the removal of the sacrificial layer as a function of the percentage of the cap perforated area. Barrel etching process parameters also varied. Finally, a full three-dimensional finite element method-based simulation model was developed to predict the impact of fabricated thin film encapsulating caps on RF performance of CPWs.This contribution explores different strategies to electrically contact vertical pillars with diameters less than 100 nm. Two process strategies have been defined, the first based on Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) indentation and the second based on planarization and reactive ion etching (RIE). We have demonstrated that both proposals provide suitable contacts. The results help to conclude that the most feasible strategy to be implementable is the one using planarization and reactive ion etching since it is more suitable for parallel and/or high-volume manufacturing processing.We demonstrate a low-temperature synthesis of hydrophilic, penicillamine-stabilized hybrid CdS-Au nanoparticles (NPs) utilizing different Au concentrations. The obtained hybrid nanomaterials exhibit photoluminescence quenching and emission lifetime reduction in comparison with their raw semiconductor CdS NPs counterparts. An increase of concentration of Au present at the surface of CdS leads to lower photoluminescence intensity and faster emission decays, suggesting more efficient charge separation when larger Au domains are present. For photocatalysis studies, we performed methylene blue (MB) absorption measurements under irradiation in the presence of CdS-Au NPs. After 1 h of light exposure, we observed the absorbance decrease to about 35% and 10% of the initial value for the CdS-5Au and CdS-7.5Au (the hybrid NPs obtained in a presence of 5.0 and 7.5 mM Au), respectively, which indicates MB reduction caused by electrons effectively separated from holes on metal surface. In further similar photocatalysis experiments, we measured bovine serum albumin (BSA) integrated photoluminescence intensity quenching in the presence of CdS-Au NPs, with a 50% decrease being obtained for CdS-2.5Au NPs and CdS-5Au NPs, with a faster response rate detected for the system prepared with a higher Au concentration. The results suggest hole-driven reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, causing BSA degeneration. Finally, we performed two-photon excited emission (TPEE) measurements for CdS-5Au NPs, obtaining their two-photon absorption (TPA) cross-section values up to 15.8 × 103 GM (Goeppert-Mayer units). We conclude that the obtained water-soluble CdS-Au NPs exhibit potential triple functionalities as photocatalysts for reduction and oxidation reactions as well as materials for two-photon absorption applications, so that they may be considered as future theranostics.OBJECTIVE This study aims to assess the relationship that frailty has with nutritional status and functional risk factors in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS Cross-sectional study in community-dwelling older people, independent for walking and without impaired cognition. Frailty was assessed by Fried criteria. Nutritional status was analyzed by the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF), biochemical markers (albumin, total proteins, cholesterol, lymphocytes, and hemoglobin); and anthropometric parameters (body mass index [BMI], body fat percentage, handgrip, and perimeters). A comprehensive geriatric assessment analyzed other risk factors functionality, cognition, falls, comorbidity, polypharmacy, physical activity, and quality of life (QoL). RESULTS We included 564 elderly people with a mean age of 76.05 (standard deviation 3.97) years; 63.1% (n = 356) were women, and 83.9% (n = 473) were prefrail, and frail. The sample presented high functionality and a nutritional status with a predominance of overweight and obesity. Factors associated with frailty (R2 = 0.43) were age over 75 years (odds ratio [OR] 3.31, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.76, 6.21; p less then 0.001), female gender (OR 2.37, 95% CI 1.24, 4.52; p = 0.009), anemia (OR 2.45, 95% CI 1.19, 5.02; p = 0.015), falls (OR 1.94, 95% CI 1.12, 3.25; p = 0.016) and the fear of falling (OR 4.01 95% CI 1.76, 9.16; p = 0.001). Performing more than 3 weekly hours of physical activity was found to be a protective factor (OR 0.23, 95% CI 0.15, 0.35; p less then 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The relationship between frailty and malnutrition in functionally independent community-dwelling older people is unclear. More studies are needed to know what nutritional markers are related to frailty, cognition, and functionality in order to discriminate the risk factors for community-dwelling older people at risk of malnutrition and dependency.Plant-microbe interactions, including those of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM), have been investigated for a wide spectrum of model plants. The present study focuses on an analysis of gene expression that encodes phosphate and sugar transporters and carbohydrate metabolic enzymes in a new model plant, the highly mycotrophic Medicago lupulina MLS-1 line under conditions of phosphorus deficiency and inoculation with Rhizophagus irregularis. Expression profiles were detected by RT-PCR at six plant stages of development (second leaf, third leaf, shooting, axillary shoot branching initiation, axillary shoot branching, flowering initiation). In comparison to control (without AM), the variant with AM inoculation exhibited a significant elevation of transcription levels of carbohydrate metabolic enzymes (MlSUS, MlHXK1) and sucrose transporters (MlSUC4) in M. lupulina leaves at the shooting stage. We suggest that this leads to a significant increase in the frequency of AM infection, an abundance of mycelium in roots and anant.Nanowires of ferroelectric potassium niobate were grown by filling nanoporous templates of both side opened anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) through radiofrequency vacuum sputtering for multisensor fabrication. The precise geometrical ordering of the AAO matrix led to well defined single axis oriented wire-shaped material inside the pores. The sensing abilities of the samples were studied and analyzed in terms of piezoelectric and pyroelectric response and the results were compared for different length of the nanopores (nanotubes)-1.3 µm, 6.3 µm and 10 µm. Based on scanning electronic microscopy, elemental and microstructural analyses, as well as electrical measurements at bending and heating, the overall sensing performance of the devices was estimated. It was found that the produced membrane type elements, consisting potassium niobate grown in AAO template exhibited excellent piezoelectric response due to the increased specific area as compared to non-structured films, and could be further enhanced with the nanowires length. The piezoelectric voltage increased linearly with 16 mV per micrometer of nanowire's length. At the same time the pyroelectric voltage was found to be less sensitive to the nanowires length, changing its value at 400 nV/µm. This paper provides a simple and low-cost approach for nanostructuring ferroelectric oxides with multisensing application, and serves as a base for further optimization of template based nanostructured devices.Transgenes containing a fragment of the I retrotransposon represent a powerful model of piRNA cluster de novo formation in the Drosophila germline. We revealed that the same transgenes located at different genomic loci form piRNA clusters with various capacity of small RNA production. Transgenic piRNA clusters are not established in piRNA pathway mutants. However, in the wild-type context, the endogenous ancestral I-related piRNAs heterochromatinize and convert the I-containing transgenes into piRNA-producing loci. Here, we address how the quantitative level of piRNAs influences the heterochromatinization and piRNA production. We show that a minimal amount of maternal piRNAs from ancestral I-elements is sufficient to form the transgenic piRNA clusters. Supplemental piRNAs stemming from active I-element copies do not stimulate additional chromatin changes or piRNA production from transgenes. Therefore, chromatin changes and piRNA production are initiated by a minimum threshold level of complementary piRNAs, suggesting a selective advantage of prompt cell response to the lowest level of piRNAs. It is noteworthy that the weak piRNA clusters do not transform into strong ones after being targeted by abundant I-specific piRNAs, indicating the importance of the genomic context for piRNA cluster establishment. Analysis of ovarian transcription profiles suggests that regions facilitating convergent transcription favor the formation of transgenic piRNA clusters.
