Banning food production - or condemning food - was considered unacceptable in a long-term perspective, and huge efforts were made to develop mitigating options. Some of these are still in place, 35 years after the accident. This article describes some of the long-term efforts made by Norwegian authorities to attempt to alleviate the consequences for the reindeer herders. Every accident and crisis is unique, and this is true for the experiences in Norway. However, some of the experiences in Norway are likely to have universal value.
The subtle Lisfranc injury is the disruption of the osteoligamentary complex between the first cuneiform and the second metatarsal, resulting in minor widening of this space that is often difficult to detect with plain radiographs. In this study, we assessed the results after treatment of the different stages of subtle Lisfranc injuries, focusing on their impact on foot arch anatomy and functionality at short- to midterm follow-up.

A retrospective study including patients treated in our center for a subtle Lisfranc injury between 2012 and 2019 was conducted. Demographic, epidemiologic, radiographic, and clinical data were obtained and assessed, focusing on foot arch structure and foot function, which was evaluated with the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) midfoot score and the Foot Function Index (FFI).

A total of 42 patients with a mean age of 49 ± 17.5 years were included, with an average of 4.3 years' follow-up (range, 1-8). Stage I injuries according to Nunley classification reptly diminished in this somewhat heterogenous cohort.

There may be many reasons for delays to primary cleft surgery. Our aim was to investigate the age of children undergoing primary cleft lip or primary cleft palate repair in 5 cleft centers within the United Kingdom. Identify the reasons for delayed primary cleft lip repair (beyond 6 months) and delayed primary palate repair (beyond 13 months). Identify children who had a cleft lip and/or palate (CL±P) that was intentionally unrepaired and the reasons for this.

A retrospective, multicenter review of patients born with a CL±P between December 1, 2012, and December 31, 2016. Three regional cleft centers, comprising of 5 cleft administrative units in the United Kingdom participated.

In all, 1826 patients with CL±P were identified. Of them, 120 patients had delayed lip repair, outside the expected standard of 183 days. And, 178 patients in total had delayed palate repair, outside the expected standard of 396 days. Twenty (1%) patients had an unrepaired cleft palate.

This large retrospective review highlighes, being underweight or prematurity, highlights the importance of the cleft specialist nurse and pediatrician within the cleft multidisciplinary team.
This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of intra-articular hyaluronic acid (HA) injection with different molecular weights (MWs) for treating hip osteoarthritis (OA).

A systematic literature search for relevant studies was conducted in 3 electronic databases, including PubMed, BMJ Journals, and Cochrane Library, from inception to April 2020. Extracted outcomes included visual analogue scale (VAS) (1, 3, and 6 months), Lequesne index (3 and 6 months), and adverse effects. HAs were classified into low-molecular-weight (LMW), moderate-molecular-weight (MMW), high-molecular-weight (HMW), and ultra-high-molecular-weight (UHMW) groups. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.3.

A total of 15 studies with 614 patients were included. Our meta-analysis showed that the HMW HA group had the best improvement in VAS and Lequesne index compared with other HA groups for all the follow-up visits. Moreover, the HMW group demonstrated significantly better improvement than the other groups in VAS at 6-month follow-up and in Lequesne index at 3- and 6-month follow-ups. Hypertonic dextrose (HD) injections (prolotherapy) for osteoarthritis are reported to reduce pain. Cartilage regeneration is hypothesized as a mechanism. This
study identifies an HD concentration that stimulates chondrogenic cells to increase metabolic activity and assesses whether this concentration affects collagen deposition and proliferation.

ATDC5 chondrogenic cells were cultured in normoglycemic DMEM/F12 medium, treated with concentrations of HD (4-400 mM), and assessed with PrestoBlue. Advanced light microscopy was used to conduct live imaging of collagen deposition through second harmonic generation microscopy (SHG) and proliferation via 2-photon excitation microscopy. Proliferation was additionally assessed with hemocytometer counts.

A linear regression model found that, relative to the 4 mM baseline control, cells treated with 200 mM had a higher mean absorbance (
= 0.023) and cells treated with 250 mM were trending toward a higher mean absorbance (
= 0.076). Polynomial regression interpolated 240 mM as producing the highest average absorbance.
