Therefore, we evaluated the impact of WPS inhalation for 3 mo followed by 3 mo of SC (air exposure) compared with those exposed for either 3 or 6 mo to WPS or air (control) in C57BL/6 mice. To this end, various physiological, biochemical, and histological endpoints were evaluated in the lung tissue. Oxaliplatin chemical structure Exposure to WPS caused focal areas of dilated alveolar spaces and foci of widening of interalveolar spaces with peribronchiolar moderate mixed inflammatory cells consisting of lymphocytes, macrophages, and neutrophil polymorphs. The latter effects were mitigated by SC. Likewise, SC reversed the increase of airway resistance and reduced the increase in the levels of myeloperoxidase, matrix metalloproteinase 9, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β in lung tissue induced by WPS. In addition, SC attenuated the increase of oxidative stress markers including 8-isoprostane, glutathione, and catalase induced by WPS. Similarly, DNA damage, apoptosis, and the expression of NF-κB in the lung induced by WPS inhalation were alleviated by CS. In conclusion, our data demonstrated, for the first time, to our knowledge, that SC-mitigated WPS inhalation induced an increase in airway resistance, inflammation, oxidative stress, DNA injury, and apoptosis, illustrating the benefits of SC on lung physiology.Objectives Black and Latinx women have higher rates of trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) compared with White women, but lower rates of vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). This study examined potential racial/ethnic differences in correlates of TOLAC and VBAC. Materials and Methods The analytic sample includes term, singleton hospital births to women with one prior cesarean in birth certificate data for 2016. We estimated associations between medical factors (diabetes, hypertension, and prepregnancy obesity) and socioeconomic status (education level and insurance type) and TOLAC and VBAC using logistic regression, stratifying by race/ethnicity and testing whether coefficients differed across models. Results Hypertension and obesity were more strongly related to reduced chances of TOLAC among White women than among women of color. For example, having a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 39 (vs. normal BMI) was associated with a 6.3 percentage-point (pp) lower probability of TOLAC for White women, a 5.9 pp lower probability for Black women, and 2.9 pp lower probability for Latinx women. Paying out-of-pocket for birth was associated with a 5.5 pp increase in the probability of TOLAC among White women, versus a 3.2 pp decrease among Black women. Overweight and obesity were associated with lower probability of VBAC, but the magnitude of this association was smaller for Black and Latinx women than for White women. Conclusions More research is needed to elucidate the underlying decision-making processes that lead to these associations. Future work should focus on ensuring equity in access to VBAC-supportive providers and hospitals and fostering informed decision-making after a prior cesarean.Epidemiological studies demonstrate an apparent sex-based difference in the prevalence of asthma, with a higher risk in boys than girls, which is reversed postpuberty, where women become more prone to asthma than men, suggesting a plausible beneficial role for male hormones, especially androgens as a regulator of pathophysiology in asthmatic lungs. Using a murine model of asthma developed with mixed allergen (MA) challenge, we report a significant change in airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), as demonstrated by increased thickness of epithelial and airway smooth muscle layers and collagen deposition, as well as Th2/Th17-biased inflammation in the airways of non-gonadectomized (non-GDX) and gonadectomized (GDX) male mice. Here, compared with non-GDX mice, MA-induced AHR and inflammatory changes were more prominent in GDX mice. Activation of androgen receptor (AR) using 5α-dihydrotestosterone (5α-DHT, AR agonist) resulted in decreased Th2/Th17 inflammation and remodeling-associated changes, resulting in improved lung function compared with MA alone challenged mice, especially in GDX mice. These changes were not observed with Flutamide (Flut, AR antagonist). Overall, we show that AR exerts a significant and beneficial role in asthma by regulating AHR and inflammation.Background The prognosis of phenylketonuria (PKU) in terms of neurocognitive outcome is directly related to lifelong phenylalanine (Phe) levels and adherence to treatment. Monitoring and treatment of PKU patients can be complicated in challenging circumstances as pandemics. This study aims to evaluate the impact of telemedicine for monitoring and treatment of PKU patients on metabolic outcome during coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) outbreak. Materials and Methods Patients who were diagnosed as PKU and treated with low Phe diet, tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), or BH4 adjunct with low Phe diet were enrolled. Study period was divided into two periods prepandemic period wherein patients were followed up in outpatients' clinic and during pandemic wherein telemedicine was used. Demographic findings, laboratory results, and therapy responses were reviewed retrospectively and compared between the two periods. All procedures were in accordance with the ethical standards of the local ethical committee of Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty (17/11/2020-151640) and with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 2013. Results Ninety-three (n = 93) patients were enrolled to this study. The ratio of the samples with Phe levels in the recommended ranges was found to be statistically higher during the pandemic wherein an online monitoring system was used in all treatment modalities (p less then 0.05). The decrease in Phe washout frequency was statistically significant during the pandemic in the low Phe diet group (p  less then  0.05). Considering the relationship between Phe tolerance before and during the pandemic, a significant increase in Phe tolerance was noted during the pandemic in the low Phe diet group (p less then 0.05). Conclusions Telemedicine can be an appropriate and effective monitoring option for PKU patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
