Overclaiming is the phenomenon whereby people claim more knowledge of a topic than they actually have. In adults, this behavior is related to the extent to which they consider themselves an expert on that topic and may be related to impression management. We investigated the emergence of this phenomenon by developing a child-friendly overclaiming questionnaire (OCQ)-the Child-OCQ. We measured the tendency of children (5-10 years of age old; N = 94) to claim knowledge of items that did not exist for a variety of topics (places, characters, animals, food, and musical instruments). We also examined the relationship between children's overclaiming of knowledge and their self-perceived liking of, and expertise in, the topics. To validate our scale, an adult sample (N = 51) completed both the Child-OCQ and a standardized adult OCQ, the OCQ-150, showing similar overclaiming patterns on both measures. Although overclaiming behaviors decreased throughout childhood, even children as old as 10 years were not adult-like and were more likely to overclaim knowledge than adults. In addition, we did not find strong evidence that children's perceived expertise on a topic influenced their tendency to overclaim knowledge, suggesting that the mechanisms behind the overclaiming phenomenon are different in children and do not reflect impression management until later during adolescence or adulthood.Children's verbal number skills set the foundation for mathematical development. Therefore, it is central to understand their cognitive origins. Evidence suggests that preschool children rely on visuospatial abilities when solving counting and number naming tasks despite their predominantly verbal nature. We aimed to replicate these findings when controlling for verbal abilities and sociodemographic factors. Moreover, we further characterized the relation between visuospatial abilities and verbal number skills by examining the role of spatial language. Because spatial language encompasses the verbalization of spatial thinking, it is a key candidate supporting the interplay between visuospatial and verbal processes. Regression analysis indicated that both visuospatial and verbal abilities, as assessed by spatial perception and phonological awareness, respectively, uniquely predicted verbal number skills when controlling for their respective influences, age, gender, and socioeconomic status. This confirms the spatial grounding of verbal number skills. Interestingly, adding spatial language to the model abolished the predictive effects of visuospatial and verbal abilities, whose influences were completely mediated by spatial language. Verbal number skills thus concurrently depend on specifically those visuospatial and verbal processes jointly indexed through spatial language. The knowledge of spatial terms might promote verbal number skills by advancing the understanding of the spatial relations between numerical magnitudes on the mental number line. Promoting spatial language in preschool thus might be a successful avenue for stimulating mathematical development prior to formal schooling. Moreover, measures of spatial language could become an additional promising tool to screen preschool children for potential upcoming difficulties with mathematical learning.
Advances in diagnostic technologies, surgical management, and perioperative care have increased survival for neonates with complex congenital heart disease (CCHD). The success of these advances exposed a heightened risk of brain injury and developmental disabilities. The General Movements Assessment, a non-invasive method, may detect early neurodevelopmental impairments in high-risk infants.
To examine whether infants with CCHD undergoing neonatal surgery have higher prevalence of atypical general movements (GMs) than a reference group, and whether single ventricle physiology with systemic oxygen saturations <90% increases risk for atypical GMs.
Serial General Movements Assessment (GMA) in a cohort of infants with CCHD (n=74) at writhing (term-6weeks) and fidgety (7-17weeks) GM-age. GMA focused on the presence of definitely abnormal GM-complexity and absent fidgety movements. Single GMAs at 3months were available from a reference sample of Dutch infants (n=300). Regression analyses examined relationships between cardiac characteristics and definitely abnormal GM-complexity.
Higher prevalence of definitely abnormal GM-complexity in infants with CCHD compared to reference infants (adjusted OR 5.938, 95% CI 2.423-14.355), single ventricle CCHD increased the risk. Occurrence of absent fidgety movements was similar in infants with CCHD and reference infants (adjusted OR 0.475, 95% CI 0.058-3.876). Systemic postoperative oxygen saturations <90% was associated with higher risk of definitely abnormal GM-complexity at fidgety (adjusted OR 16.445 95% CI 1.149-235.281), not at writhing age.
Infants with CCHD, especially those with single ventricle CCHD, are at increased risk of definitely abnormal GM-complexity. GMA at fidgety age is recommended.
