Replacing uPVC Window Handles
The replacement of window handles made of upvc is an easy task. The important thing is to ensure that the replacement handle fits the spindle that was cut out of the window mechanism.
If the steps below are followed correctly the cockspur handle will be able to fit into most windows. The height of the step of the handle is important.
What to Look For
A large portion of windows in the UK come with uPVC handles, and over time they will begin to show signs of wear and tear. If this happens, the window handle could become shaky or difficult to operate, making it essential to replace it. This is a simple task that is achievable by anyone who is comfortable using basic hand tools.
The first step is to make sure that the handle is securely attached to the window frame and in a position that is open. The next step is to locate the fixing pins or screws that keep the handle in the position it is in. They are usually located on the inside of the handle and are removed using a screwdriver or pliers.
When the handle is loose, gently pull it away from its hinges. The next step is to find a new handle with the same design and size. upvc door handle repair can be done on the internet or in an area DIY store, and it should take about five minutes with a screwdriver.
When replacing the handle of a uPVC handle it is essential to consider the step height. This is the distance from the base of the handle to the point at which it is placed on the frame of the window. This is a typical measurement, and you should verify the height of the step prior to ordering a replacement handle.
There are a variety of sizes based on the kind of handle. Inline handles for uPVC windows usually have lug centres of 31mm, and there are also handles with cockspur with 43mm centres. Tilt-and-turn handles are commonly found on uPVC Windows. They have a special design that allows the window to be slid down to let in air, and then turned to fully open the window.
The most common breakage in uPVC handles is that they crack inside rather than breaking off from the base section. This makes them difficult to open, and it is therefore crucial to ensure that any replacement handle you buy has the same spindle length as the one you have.
Remove the Old Handle
If the handles on your windows are damaged or improperly installed, they could cause double-glazed windows to open and close incorrectly. They may even get stuck. This could be due to various factors, including general wear and tear on the handle or corrosion. In these instances it is essential to find replacement handles made of upvc as soon as you can to avoid further damage and loss of functionality.
One of the first steps that you should do when replacing window handles made of upvc is to remove the old handle from the window. Begin by removing the screw when the handle in closed position. Once you have removed the screw, you are able to remove the handle. You can make the process simpler by using an electric screwdriver.
It is also worth noting that the screws on the handle may be hidden behind plastic caps, so it is recommended to use a Stanley knife to the screws and take them off. After the handle has been removed, examine the square cut out at the handle's base to make sure that the new window lock handles are compatible with it. It is crucial to measure the length of the spindle on the handle that was used and compare it to the size of the window mechanism spindle cutout.
There are three kinds of Upvc handles: Espag handles with a central screw that can be turned left or right and Cranked handles with two screws, and Spade handles which are made of flat arms and can be used on either side of the windows made of upvc. Once you have a suitable replacement, it is simply a case of screwing the handle into place and making sure that the spindle is correctly fitted into the lock mechanism. Once you have done this, tighten the handle to the window frame. The replacement upvc handle will now be secure.
Measure the Spindle
If you need to replace a upvc handle that has collapsed, it's likely the spindle holding it in place is damaged or loose. In some instances, it can be fixed using pins or screws to tighten it. In other cases it will have to be replaced completely. There are several kinds of window handles made of upvc. These include inline espagnolette handles, cockspur handles, and tilt and turn handles. Each type has a different method for installing and removing the handle.
It is crucial to measure the handle prior to purchasing a replacement. This will ensure that the handle will fit the window properly and will be the right size. Luckily, all handles conform to industry standards for sizing, so it's quite easy to locate the right size.
To determine the size of the handle, turn the window to the open position. Then, you should be able to see the size of the screw or pin that is holding it. Use a ruler or a tape measure to determine how long the spindle is. Once you know the length of the spindle, you can purchase a replacement one with the same length.
The step height of a upvc window handle is another factor to consider when purchasing a replacement. The step height is the distance from the bottom of the handle until where it rests on the frame. In general, this is approximately 21mm for uPVC windows or 9mm for aluminium. Dropping something into the gap will allow you to observe how far the handle extends before it comes into contact with an obstruction.
Cockspur handles typically have different backset heights depending on the type of window they are installed in. Inline Espag handle heights are 43mm from the centre to the centre (two fixing points). Cockspur handles however have different backset heights dependent on the shape of the window they are in. This is due to the fact that they have spurs that extend from the handle and then locks over the cockspur wedge striker plate.
Fit the New Handle
After you've chosen the new handle, make sure it is aligned with the screw holes on the door. Then, secure it with the screws supplied. If you're replacing the latch lever it can be put in the same way as the door handle. After that, attach the door trim once more to conceal the screws for mounting.
Tip: To remove a metal head from a wooden wedge place the handle on the floor so that its wide end is on the ground. Then use an hammer and tap the thin end. Be careful not to damage the handle or the spindle.
