Supracrestal ridge augmentation (SRA) is a major challenge for clinicians. This study investigated the efficacy of a 3D-printed (3DP) hydroxyapatite/poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (HA/PLGA) scaffold as a potential biologic for SRA.
Scaffolds that were 5mm in diameter and 2.5-mm thick with a 1.2-mm diameter through-and-through central hole composed of 90% HA and 10% PLGA were printed using an extrusion-based bioprinter. The HA/PLGA scaffold was fixed with a 1.2-mm titanium mini-implant on the buccal surface of rat mandible (Ti-HPS), and the outcome of SRA were compared with sites treated with a titanium mini-implant alone (control) and a titanium mini-implant covered with deproteinized bovine bone-derived matrix (Ti-DBBM) at 4 and 8 weeks by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), back-scattered SEM, and histology assessments.
The HA/PLGA scaffolds were 2.486±0.082mm thick with an outer diameter of 4.543±0.057mm and an inner diameter of 1.089±0.045mm, and the pore dimensions were 0.48-0.52mm. There was significantly more mineralized tissue in the Ti-DBBM and Ti-HPS groups than in the control group at both time points. Newly formed bone (NB) was well-integrated with the DBBM and HA/PLGA scaffolds. The framework of the 3DP-HA/PLGA scaffold remained in place, and NB-implant contact (NBIC) was advanced to the middle level in the Ti-HPS group until 8 weeks, whereas dispersion of DBBM with a lower level NBIC was noted in the Ti-DBBM group at both time points.

To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of the COVID-19 outbreak in Taiwan and evaluate the key interventions, we conducted a retrospective cohort study during January 17-June 30, 2020. As of June 30, the COVID-19 outbreak, including 447 laboratory-confirmed cases, was eliminated by mixed approaches border control, enhanced surveillance, case detection with contact tracing, quarantine, and population-based interventions like face mask use. The improvement of median time from disease onset to notification (5 days [range -3 to 27] before March 1 to 1 day [range -8 to 22] after March 1) suggested the timeliness and comprehensiveness of surveillance and contact tracing. Travel restrictions with quarantine, resulting in fewer clusters, were also complementary to minimize disease spread. Under combined interventions, Taiwan successfully contained the COVID-19 spread within the country and minimized its impact on the society.
To describe the prognostic factors and survival outcomes in patients who underwent orbital exenteration surgery at a tertiary center over a 20-year period.
This institutional retrospective study reviewed all patients who underwent orbital exenteration between January 1999 and January 2019at Department of Ophthalmology, National Taiwan University Hospital. Patient demographics, tumor site, histopathology, status of surgical margins, additional resection, local recurrence, metastases, survival, and treatment data were recorded. Log-rank tests were used to verify the difference in survival curves among various potential prognostic factors.
Thirty patients (27 with malignancy, 1 with hybrid neurofibroma/schwannoma, and 2 with mucormycosis) were included. Malignant melanoma (n=11) and sebaceous gland carcinoma (n=8) were the most common indications for exenteration. Survival rates were 83% at 1 year, 42% at 3 years, and 33% at 5 years. Dapansutrile clinical trial Among patients with malignancies, 71% patients had clear margins after exenteration. All the incidences of local recurrence developed in the first 2 years postoperatively. Postoperative survival was significantly related to lymphovascular invasion (p=0.018), but was independent from surgical margins, presence of metastasis, local recurrence, or perineural invasion.

Genetic analysis revealed the strains belonged to East/Central/South African genotype and had 99.95%-100% identity with the strains from the imported cases from Myanmar in 2019. This study aimed to examine the long-lasting inhibition of OATP1B1 by uremic toxins and their metabolites. Preincubation of HEK293/OATP1B1 cells with 21 uremic toxins resulted in almost no change in the uptake of a typical substrate [3H]estrone-3-sulfate (E1S), although some directly inhibited [3H]E1S uptake. In contrast, preincubation with an indole metabolite, 6-hydroxyindole, reduced [3H]E1S uptake, even after the inhibitor was washed out before [3H]E1S incubation. Such long-lasting inhibition by 6-hydroxyindole was time-dependent and recovered after a 3-h incubation without 6-hydroxyindole. Preincubation with 6-hydroxyindole increased the Km for [3H]E1S uptake with minimal change in Vmax. This was compatible with no change in the cell-surface expression of OATP1B1, as assessed by a biotinylation assay.
