The longitudinal Leiden Orthopaedics Outcomes of OsteoArthritis Study is a multicenter (7 hospitals), observational study including patients undergoing total hip or total knee arthroplasty (THA or TKA). Between June 2012 and December 2014, 1796 THA and 1636 TKA patients were invited, of whom 1043 THA (58%; mean age 68 years [standard deviation, SD 10]) and 970 TKA patients (59%; mean age 71 years [SD 9.5]) participated in the study. At 6 months, 35 THA/38 TKA patients were lost to follow-up. Response rates were 90% for THA (898/1000) and 89% for TKA (827/932) participants. At 1 and 2 years, 8 and 18 THA and 17 and 11 TKA patients were lost to follow-up, respectively. The response rates among those eligible were 87% (866/992) and 84% (812/972) for THA and 84% (771/917) and 83% (756/906) for TKA patients, respectively. The 2-year questionnaire was completed by 78.5% of the included THA patients and by 77.9% of the included TKA patients.

In this study, we evaluate the potential of nanoscale atomic force microscopy (AFM) and macroscopic shear rheometry to assess the mechanical properties of healthy and cancerous human colon tissues. The direct comparison of tissue mechanical behavior under uniaxial and shear deformation shows that cancerous tissues not only are stiffer compared to healthy tissue but also respond differently when shear and compressive stresses are applied. These results suggest that rheological parameters can be useful measures of colon cancer mechanopathology. Additionally, we extend the list of biological materials exhibiting compressional stiffening and shear weakening effects to human colon tumors. These mechanical responses might be promising mechanomarkers and become part of the new procedures in colon cancer diagnosis. Enrichment of histopathological grading with rheological assessment of tissue mechanical properties will potentially allow more accurate colon cancer diagnosis and improve prognosis.Elderly recipients (≥70 y) account for 2.6% of all liver transplants (LTs) in the United States and have similar outcomes as younger recipients. Although the rate of elderly recipients in combined liver-kidney transplant (CLKT) is similar, limited data are available on how elderly recipients perform after CLKT.
We have previously shown excellent outcomes in CLKT using delayed kidney transplant (Indiana) Approach (mean kidney cold ischemia time = 53 ± 14 h). Between 2007 and 2018, 98 CLKTs were performed using the Indiana Approach at Indiana University (IU) and the data were retrospectively analyzed. Recipients were subgrouped based on their age 18-45 (n = 16), 46-59 (n = 34), 60-69 (n = 40), and ≥70 years (n = 8).

Overall, more elderly patients received LT at IU (5.2%) when compared nationally (2.6%). The rate of elderly recipients in CLKT at IU was 8.2% (versus 2% Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipient). Recipient and donor characteristics were comparable between all age groups except recipient age and duration of dialysis.
