Although chronic diseases have become a public health dilemma in China, evidence regarding their relationship to a healthy lifestyle in the Chinese population remains limited.

Based on data obtained from a survey conducted by China's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), odds ratios (OR) corresponding to 95% confidential intervals (CIs) related to healthy lifestyle factors were calculated using ordinal logistic regression.

Most participants in our study presented 1 to 3 healthy lifestyle factors, and only 0.35% of men presented all 6 factors evaluated. Eighty-three percent of participants had at least one chronic disease. A decrease in chronic disease morbidity was followed by an increase in healthy lifestyle factors number. For the three chronic diseases (hypertension, diabetes, and/or dyslipidemia), a lack of physical activity represented 1.231 times (95% CI, 1.013-1.497) higher risk than being physically active. A body mass index (BMI) outside the range of 18.5-24.9kg/m
was associated with a higher risk of 1.361 times (95% CI, 1.139-1.625) compared to a BMI within 18.5-24.9kg/m
. Comparing participants with healthy lifestyle factor ≤1, the OR for participants with 2, 3 and 4-6 healthy lifestyle factors were 0.675, and 0.425 (0.634 and 0.341 for men), respectively.

Chronic diseases have become one of the leading health burdens in China, while healthy lifestyles have not kept pace. The inverse association between an increasing number of healthy lifestyle factors and chronic disease risk indicates an urgent public need to popularize a healthy lifestyle pattern.

Mid-aortic syndrome (MAS), characterized by segmental stricture of the distal thoracic and abdominal aorta, is a heterogeneous clinical syndrome with multiple etiologies.

We retrospectively analyzed 143 consecutive patients (99 females and 44 males, mean age 40.93±15.31 years) with MAS seen from January 1, 2010 to January 1, 2019.

Takayasu arteritis (76.9%, 110/143) and atherosclerosis (19.6%, 28/143) were the most-common causes. There were also one patient with Behçet's disease and one with congenital MAS in the cohort. Hypertension was the most-common manifestation. Constitutional symptoms were mainly seen in Takayasu arteritis, and neurological, gastrointestinal and vascular symptoms were common in both Takayasu arteritis and atherosclerosis. The infrarenal segment was the most-commonly involved in atherosclerosis (89.3%, 25/28), whereas lesions were more distributed in Takayasu arteritis. The mean length of involved segments was longer (43.45±23.64 mm vs. 30.68±12.66 mm; P= 0.018) and the degree of stenosis was lower (80.20±13.36% vs. 87.50±13.95%, P=0.004) in Takayasu arteritis than atherosclerosis. The most-common concurrently involved branch was the renal artery, followed by the celiac trunk and mesenteric arteries, in both Takayasu arteritis (51.8%, 32.7% and 27.3%, respectively) and atherosclerosis (53.6%, 25.0% and 17.9%, respectively). Concurrent artery involvement and coexisting lesions were absent in MAS caused by congenial coarctation of the abdominal aorta and Behçet's disease.

Takayasu arteritis and atherosclerosis were the most-common causes of MAS among these adults. Imaging tests provided evidence of involved segments and luminal and mural changes, aiding conclusive diagnoses and etiological differentiation of MAS.

This study determined the potential hepato- and renal protective role of berberine and hydroalcohol extract of Berberis integerrima (barberry) against cisplatin-induced acute liver and kidney injury.

Animals were dedicated into six groups (n=7 per group) control, control+Ber (berberine, 0.4mg/kg/day during 10 days, i.p.), control+B.E (barberry extract, 160mg/kg/day during 10 days, i.p.), Cis (cisplatin, 8mg/kg on 7th day, i.p.), Cis+Ber (berberine, 100mg/kg/day during 10 days; cisplatin, 8mg/kg on 7th day), Cis+B.E (barberry extract, 160mg/kg/day during 10 days; cisplatin, 8mg/kg on 7th day). After placing the rats in metabolic cages for 24h, blood, urine, liver and kidney tissue samples were collected.

Compared to control, control+Ber and control+B.E groups, cisplatin administration led to kidney and liver dysfunction. These happened with diminished activities of antioxidant enzymes, increased levels of malondialdehyde, Toll-like receptor 4 gene expression and histological damages in hepatic and renal tissues. Berberine and barberry extract administration decreased all the changes.

An intensification in enzymatic oxidant status, decrease in lipid peroxidation with decrease in TLR4 gene expression level indicate that barberry extract may be a potential candidate in combating cisplatin-induced oxidative stress and inflammation in liver and kidney tissues through its constituent berberine.

It constitutes the last step of liver stage development after which merozoites egress to the bloodstream and invade red blood cells. Many parasite proteins have been shown to play key roles in this process. Phospholipases are known to be actively involved in membrane formation and remodeling. At least one phospholipase A2, localized to the parasitophorous vacuolar membrane, is known to be directly important for parasitophorous vacuolar membrane (PVM) rupture and subsequent release of merozoites. Here, we characterize a Plasmodium berghei phosphatidic acid (PA) preferring phospholipase A1 (PbPla1) homolog. C-terminal 3XHA-mCherry tagging revealed that PbPla1 is expressed in all life cycle stages except sporozoites and is present in the parasite's cytoplasm. Targeted disruption of PbPla1 revealed its non-essentiality for the blood and mosquito stages. Pla1- sporozoites were found to be late in their ability to establish successful blood stage infection in mice. While exoerythrocytic form development was found to be normal in vitro, a decrease in the number of merosomes was observed. PVM rupture in late exo-erythrocytic forms (EEFs) was quantified by counting the number of parasites with intact PVMs, and was found to be significantly higher in Pla1-. Our findings indicate the role of PbPla1 in merosome release.Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue remains the most common source for DNA extraction from human tissue both in research and routine clinical practice. FFPE DNA can be considerably fragmented, and the amount of DNA measured in nanograms may not represent the amount of amplifiable DNA available for next-generation sequencing (NGS). LL37 Two samples with similar input DNA amounts in nanograms can yield NGS analyses of considerably different quality. Nevertheless, many protocols for NGS library preparation from FFPE DNA describe input DNA in nanograms without indication of a minimum requirement of amplifiable genome equivalent DNA. An important NGS quality metric is the library complexity, reflecting the number of DNA fragments from the original specimen represented in the final library. Aiming to illustrate the relationship between DNA fragmentation degree and library complexity, we assessed the fragmentation degree of 116 lung cancer FFPE DNA samples to calculate the amount of amplifiable input DNA used for library preparation. Mean unique coverage, coverage uniformity, and mean number of PCR duplicates with the same unique molecular identifier were used to evaluate library complexity. We showed that the amount of amplifiable input DNA predicted library complexity better than the input measured in nanograms. The frequent discrepancy between DNA amount in nanograms and the amount of amplifiable DNA indicate that the fragmentation degree should be considered when performing NGS of FFPE DNA. Importantly, the fragmentation assessment may help when interpreting NGS data and be a useful tool for evaluating library complexity in the absence of unique molecular identifiers.Copper nanoparticles with different sizes cause significant changes in humans, and their interaction with biological molecules such as proteins is one of molecular biology's most critical and difficult challenges. One of the valuable tools for understating the mechanisms of different protein-nanoparticle interactions are molecular dynamics simulations. The present work attempts to understand how insulin interaction mechanisms Cu nanoparticles of different sizes (2, 6, and 10 nm) may occur with the molecular dynamics simulations methods. According to the results, in comparison to 2 and 6 nm nanoparticles, insulin interaction with the Cu 10 nm nanoparticle surface exhibits higher relative stability. The Van der Waals Forces (VDW) interactions show that by increasing the nanoparticle size from 2 nm to 6 nm (-673.32 and -847.83Kj/mol, respectively), the VDW energy leads to a significant increase. Although in the CU 10 nm, a noticeable decrease in VDW energy interaction was demonstrated (-357.21Kj/mol) due to prescurring in the A-chain. The results of the hydrophilic-hydrophobicity properties and solvent accessible surface analyses also indicated that the insulin is unfolded during its interaction with different sizes of Cu nanoparticles.
To investigate the mechanisms of potential cardioprotective effects of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) in pressure overload-induced cardiac dysfunction.

A chronic heart failure model was established using abdominal aortic constriction (AAC) surgery, rats were divided into sham, AAC, and AAC+EGCG groups. Echocardiography and tissue section staining were performed to evaluate cardiac function and pathology, respectively. Gene expression level were detected with quantitative real-time polymerase chain reactions. Label-free quantitative proteomics was used to investigate the whole proteomes of heart, and the differentially expressed proteins were analyzed using bioinformatics methods. Western blot was performed to validate the levels and the reliability of the differential proteins.

Compared with the AAC group, systolic dysfunction was improved in AAC+EGCG group after EGCG treatment. EGCG inhibited myocardial fibrosis and cardiac hypertrophy after AAC, along with reducing atrial natriuretic protein, B-type natriuretic peptide, collagen types 1 and 3 alpha 1, and transforming growth factor β-1.
