How to Get an ADHD Assessment in the UK
It can be difficult to obtain an ADHD assessment through the NHS. Waiting lists can be long and sometimes people are diagnosed with a other condition that may be a better explanation for their problems, such as depression or anxiety.
Your GP should be attentive to your concerns and understand the reasons you think you be suffering from ADHD. They should then refer you for an NHS assessment.
1. Check with your GP
In England and Wales you can get an ADHD assessment through the NHS, and it may be possible to get medication if this is appropriate for you. You'll need to see your GP and explain why you suspect you be suffering from ADHD and what impact it has on your life. Your GP must take this seriously and may require you to fill out some forms or a screening instrument before they send you to a specialist for an assessment. For adults, it will be particularly important to make a list of specific ADHD traits and symptoms that you experience in your daily life, and be prepared to provide examples when asked.
Your psychiatrist will collaborate with you closely to determine if you suffer from ADHD. They will make use of various tools and techniques, such as symptom checklists and scales to assess your behavior. They will also conduct interviews with you, your family members, and other people who know you very well. They will consider the information they get and then write an account. They will then discuss with you what they recommend and it could be that you have an ADHD diagnosis and, if necessary, that you start treatment with medication.
You might find that some doctors aren't willing to make an appointment to an assessment or not be able to prescribe ADHD medication on the NHS In this case, it's best to find an alternative GP who may be more accommodating. The charity Psychiatry-UK have some helpful advice about this on their website here.
In England you have the legal right to pick the location that you receive an ADHD evaluation, provided that the service you receive is offered by the NHS and the price of the service does not exceed what you would pay for it if you were to go directly to the NHS. If you are unable to reach an agreement with your local CCG you can ask ICAS for help in making an appeal to the national Appeal Panel. If you live in Scotland, Northern Ireland, or Wales the NHS has different guidelines and regulations. You may be able to try accessing services through Right to Choose, and Psychiatry-UK has some suggestions on this subject here.
2. Ask for a reference
Depending on where you reside in the UK there are two possible ways to receive an ADHD assessment. The first is to take advantage of the NHS by asking your GP to refer you. This could be a lengthy procedure, and in some cases you may end up waiting several years to receive a diagnosis. Alternatively, you can use the 'Right to choose route. This is a brand new legal right that allows should you feel that NHS wait times for an ADHD assessment are too long, you can request to be referred to a private provider by this method.
If you do this you must inform your GP must accept this, and sign a'shared care agreement' with the service provider you've selected. However, most GPs do not like signing shared care agreements with patients who have been diagnosed privately, particularly because they're not experts in the diagnosis of ADHD and the prescription of the medication.
In the majority of cases, you'll be able to make an appointment with the private provider of your choice. Prior to completing the initial assessment the ADHD specialist will interview you and your child, if they are older than 11 years older. The doctor will let you know whether they believe your symptoms are caused by ADHD or not.
If it is found that ADHD could be the root cause of your problem, you will usually be sent home with additional questionnaires to your school or workplace. They will then set up an appointment for a follow-up to discuss the findings and explain the diagnosis. Recommended Website will be a chance to discuss any medication options and if it is decided that medication is appropriate then your GP will be informed and asked to prescribe it for you. Any other recommendations relating to support at school or work will be discussed with your physician and any fees for this will be discussed prior to beginning. The majority of private providers provide free advice and assistance between appointments by email or phone calls.
3. Get an assessment
The process of obtaining an ADHD diagnosis in the UK is not easy and often, it's mistakenly interpreted as other mental health disorders. The best method to obtain a diagnosis of ADHD is with an assessment conducted by an experienced consultant psychiatrist who is specialized in the disorder.
You might have to wait for an assessment to be conducted by the NHS. Talk to your GP if you're worried about the time it takes to wait. Right to Choose is a new NHS initiative that gives you the option of choosing the organization to which you are referred. This allows you to bypass the NHS waiting list, and could make the process much quicker.
If you are undergoing an ADHD assessment The psychiatrist will take an extensive history of your symptoms and how they affect your daily life. The psychiatrist will then conduct a systematic clinical evaluation with standardised questions. It can be beneficial to be familiar with the traits (symptoms) of ADHD prior to your appointment. note down your experiences, as it's normal for people's minds to be blank when talking about their own experiences.
The assessment will include a physical exam and interviews with family members, teachers, members, and colleagues. It is essential to ensure that the data gathered is accurate and as complete as it can be, so that the psychiatrist will be able to provide the most precise diagnosis.
If a psychiatrist believes that you or your child suffer from ADHD and they'll recommend a thorough diagnostic assessment at a commissioned adult ADHD service. This will be an additional appointment that could include a range of tests including psychological tests and brain images to determine the severity of ADHD.
Some people choose to have a private ADHD evaluation - this is becoming more popular as waiting lists for the NHS continue to grow. There are many organizations in the UK that provide private assessments of ADHD, depending on the location you reside in. You can find a list here, or talk to your GP about which option is best for you. Private examinations are generally faster than using the NHS, but it's important to understand that your health insurance may not cover the cost.
4. Get a diagnosis
ADHD can cause significant problems in many areas of life like relationships or work, and an accurate diagnosis can aid in addressing these issues. Due to the increase in people requiring ADHD assessments, NHS services struggle to cope. The wait times can be lengthy. Some people choose to pay privately for their test. This lets them skip NHS waiting lists and start treatment earlier.
After you've been diagnosed with ADHD the next step is to formulate an action plan for treating the disorder. This could be medication, or CBT therapy. It is something you must consider before your evaluation. It will help you determine the most effective treatment for you.
You could be eligible for an ADHD assessment through the NHS based on the location you reside in the UK. If this is the situation you'll be referred to a paediatrician or psychiatrist who will examine your symptoms, and then make a diagnosis based upon the NICE 87 guidelines.
Self-referral is an option even if you don't have GP referral. A private mental health provider will conduct an ADHD assessment. This is usually faster than the NHS option, however you must ensure that your GP accepts a "Shared Care Agreement" with your private doctor.
When you're tested for ADHD, your expert will ask you questions regarding your present and previous behaviors. They will look for traits (symptoms) of ADHD, such as inattentiveness and hyperactivity/impulsiveness. They will also ask you about how these traits are affecting your life right now. Before going to an appointment, it's beneficial to be familiar with the criteria used to diagnose ADHD and to write examples of how these characteristics have affected your life.
If you're diagnosed with ADHD it could be a life-changing experience. It can open the door to many treatment options, and can give you a sense of self-understanding and awareness that a few previously undiagnosed adults find especially beneficial. It can also lead to improved relationships and a more fulfilled life.
