The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection has led to the reorganization of hospital care in several countries. The objective was to report the postoperative mortality after elective digestive resections in a nationwide cohort during the lockdown period.

This analytic study was performed using a national billing database (the Programme de Médicalisation des Systèmes d'Informations). Patients who underwent elective digestive resections were divided in 2 groups the lockdown group defined by hospital admissions between March 17 and May 11, 2020; and the control group, defined by hospital admissions during the corresponding period in 2019. Groups were matched on propensity score, geographical region, and surgical procedure. The primary outcome was the postoperative mortality.

The overall population included 15,217 patients 9,325 patients in the control group and 5,892 in the lockdown group. The overall surgical activity was decreased by 37% during the lockdown period. The overall in-hospiematic COVID-19 screening should be advocated before elective gastrointestinal surgery and that all efforts should be made to maintain elective surgical resection for cancer during the second wave in COVID-free patients.Acetabular fractures in the elderly are challenging. Management is complicated by patients' poor physiological status and osteoporotic bone. Analysis of the management of these patients must be separated from the treatment of younger patients. Conservative management continues to have a role in patients who sustain fractures that are non-displaced and are considered stable with weight bearing mobilisation, and in those patients considered too medically frail to undergo surgical intervention. The mainstay of current surgical intervention is open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and variations of ORIF and total hip arthroplasty (THA), or fix and replace. Fix and replace is being increasingly favoured in those patients who display poor prognostic factors for long term joint survival after ORIF. Percutaneous fixation has the theoretical benefits of minimally invasive surgery and the potential to make any subsequent THA less complicated. However, it requires specialised fluoroscopic skills and is not suitable for all fracture patterns. There are a number of developments being reported. The use of a reinforcement ring and THA in has been reported in a number of centres, as has the use of trabecular metal acetabular implants. A coned hemi pelvic prosthesis and THA has been described in our centre, with promising early results. The potential for 3D printing to improve preoperative planning and reduce intra-operative time is also being explored. The aim of this review is to provide a summary of the literature supporting current and future treatment methods, tips on reduction techniques and an overview of the treatment algorithm of these patients in our unit.
The digital technologies, in recent years, have integrated with temporomandibular joint reconstruction surgeries (TRS). Therefore, a systematic study was conducted to assess the impact of digital technologies in TRS. Besides, a brief comparison between the CAD/CAM and 3D printing (3DP) technologies is presented.

We searched in PubMed, ProQuest and Science direct using PRISMA guidelines. Population = Patients undergoing TRS, Intervention=CAD/CAM or 3DP, Comparison= conventional TRS (cTRS) vs technology integrated TRS (tiTRS), Outcome= Advantages/disadvantages of technology and Subjective/objective symptoms, Study design= Type of study. The quality of observational study was assessed using ROBINS-1 Assessment tool.

Out of 632 articles, 30 articles for CAD/CAM and 3DP were included in the study. A majority of TRS were done for ankylosis (new or re-entry), earlier failed surgery, osteoarthritis and neoplastic cases. The articles were divided into two groups. Group I CAD/CAM(n = 16), Group II 3DP (n = 14).

tiTRS had definite advantages over cTRS with lesser surgery time, defined osteotomies, précised implant fitting and better final result outcome however, evidence for tiTRS in long-term follow-up is inconclusive. The cost, time, infrastructure and ethical/regulatory issues are the downsides of assisted surgeries. It was observed that 3DP technology is versatile and its adaptation in the fabrication of customized implants has outpaced CAD/CAM technology. However, literature data is feeble qualitatively and quantitatively.

The TRS has leveraged the flexibility and precision of assisted surgeries. In future, tiTRS could successfully replace cTRS, provided that shortcomings should be dealt so that the technology can benefit the masses.

The bioproduction is performed by resting cells that convert glycerol into 3-HP and 1,3-propanediol in fed-batch mode. This work aimed at studying the effect of the growth conditions of L. reuteri DSM 17938 during the first step, on the glycerol bioconversion into 3-HP during the second step. A Plackett and Burman design was carried out to test, in controlled bioreactors, the effect of 11 growth conditions simultaneously, at fixed bioconversion conditions. The supplementation of the growth medium with vitamin B12 and cysteine displayed a negative effect on the 3-HP bioproduction. The addition of glucose, phytone peptone, Tween 80, 1,2-propanediol and betaine in the growth medium, together with a low temperature and an optimal pH of 6.0 during the growth phase increased the bioconversion duration from 56 h to 89 h at a glycerol feeding rate of 0.
