Results revealed that greater susceptibility to emotion contagion was associated with greater concern about the spread of COVID-19, more depression, anxiety, stress, and OCD symptoms. Consumption of media about COVID-19 also predicted anxiety about COVID-19, though results were not moderated by emotion contagion. However, emotion contagion did moderate the relationship between COVID-19-related media consumption and elevated OCD symptoms. Although limited by a cross-sectional design that precludes causal inferences, the present results highlight the need for study of how illness fears may be transmitted socially during a pandemic.This study investigated Chinese university students' technology-assisted self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies and whether the technology-based SRL strategies mediated the associations between English language self-efficacy, English enjoyment, and learning outcomes. Data were collected from 525 undergraduate students in mainland China through three self-report questionnaires and the performance on an English language proficiency test. While students reported an overall moderate level of SRL strategies, they reported a high level of technology-based vocabulary learning strategies. A statistically significant positive relationship was noted between the use of technology-based SRL strategies and students' English learning outcomes. English language self-efficacy and English language enjoyment were both related to technology-based SRL strategies. Furthermore, SRL strategies fully mediated the relationship between English enjoyment and English learning outcomes, but the association between English enjoyment and SRL strategies was only partially mediated by English language self-efficacy. Pedagogically, findings of this study suggest that training and instruction aimed at promotion of modern educational technology among students need to give attention to developing their strategic awareness of motivation regulation in optimizing effectiveness of their technology use in learning the target language.Upon hearing "Some of Michelangelo's sculptures are in Rome," adults can easily generate a scalar implicature and infer that the intended meaning of the utterance corresponds to "Some but not all Michelangelo's sculptures are in Rome." Comprehension experiments show that preschoolers struggle with this kind of inference until at least 5 years of age. Surprisingly, the few studies having investigated children's production of scalar expressions like some and all suggest that production is adult-like already in their third year of life. Thus, children's production of implicatures seems to develop at least 2 years before their comprehension of implicatures. In this paper, we present a novel account of scalar implicature generation in the framework of Bidirectional Optimality Theory the Asymmetry Account. We show that the production-comprehension asymmetry is predicted to emerge because the comprehension of some requires the hearer to consider the speaker's perspective, but the production of some does not require the speaker to consider the hearer's perspective. Hence, children's comprehension of scalar expressions, but not their production of scalar expressions, is predicted to be related to their theory of mind development. Not possessing fully developed theory of mind abilities yet, children thus have difficulty in comprehending scalar expressions such as some in an adult-like way. BGT226 nmr Our account also explains why variable performance is found in experimental studies testing children's ability to generate scalar implicatures; moreover, it describes the differences between children's and adults' implicature generation in terms of their ability to recursively apply theory of mind; finally, it sheds new light on the question why the interpretation of numerals does not require implicature generation.Multimorbidity, the presence of two or more diseases in a patient, is maybe the greatest health challenge for the aging populations of many high-income countries. One of the main drivers of multimorbidity is diabetes mellitus (DM) due to its large number of risk factors and complications. Yet, we currently have very limited understanding of how to quantify multimorbidity beyond a simple counting of diseases and thereby inform prevention and intervention strategies tailored to the needs of elderly DM patients. Here, we conceptualize multimorbidity as typical temporal progression patterns of multiple diseases, so-called trajectories, and develop a framework to perform a matched and sex-specific comparison between DM and non-diabetic patients. We find that these disease trajectories can be organized into a multi-level hierarchy in which DM patients progress from relatively healthy states with low mortality to high-mortality states characterized by cardiovascular diseases, chronic lower respiratory diseases, renal failure, and different combinations thereof. The same disease trajectories can be observed in non-diabetic patients, however, we find that DM patients typically progress at much higher rates along their trajectories. Comparing male and female DM patients, we find a general tendency that females progress faster toward high multimorbidity states than males, in particular along trajectories that involve obesity. Males, on the other hand, appear to progress faster in trajectories that combine heart diseases with cerebrovascular diseases. Our results show that prevention and efficient management of DM are key to achieve a compression of morbidity into higher patient ages. Multidisciplinary efforts involving clinicians as well as experts in machine learning and data visualization are needed to better understand the identified disease trajectories and thereby contribute to solving the current multimorbidity crisis in healthcare.Tubular aggregates (TAs) in skeletal muscle fibers are unusual accumulation of sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) tubes that are found in different disorders including TA myopathy (TAM). TAM is a muscular disease characterized by muscle pain, cramping, and weakness that has been recently linked to mutations in STIM1 and ORAI1. STIM1 and ORAI1 are the two main proteins mediating store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE), a mechanism activated by depletion of intracellular Ca2+ stores (e.g., SR) that allows recovery of Ca2+ from the extracellular space during repetitive muscle activity. We have recently shown that exercise triggers the formation of unique intracellular junctions between SR and transverse tubules named Ca2+entry units (CEUs). CEUs promote colocalization of STIM1 with ORAI1 and improve muscle function in presence of external Ca2+. TAs virtually identical to those of TAM patients are also found in fast-twitch fibers of aging male mice. Here, we used a combination of electron and confocal microscopy, Western blotting, and ex vivo stimulation protocols (in presence or absence of external Ca2+) to evaluate the presence of TAs, STIM1-ORAI1 localization and expression and fatigue resistance of intact extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles in wild-type male adult (4-month-old) and aged (24-month-old) mice and in mice trained in wheel cages for 15 months (from 9 to 24 months of age).
