Meditation-based mental training interventions show physical and mental health benefits. However, it remains unclear how different types of mental practice affect emotion processing at both the neuronal and the behavioural level. In the context of the ReSource project, 332 participants underwent an fMRI scan while performing an emotion anticipation task before and after three 3-month training modules cultivating 1) attention and interoceptive awareness (Presence); 2) socio-affective skills, such as compassion (Affect); 3) socio-cognitive skills, such as theory of mind (Perspective). Only the Affect module led to a significant reduction of experienced negative affect when processing images depicting human suffering. In addition, after the Affect module, participants showed significant increased activation in the right supramarginal gyrus when confronted with negative stimuli. We conclude that socio-affective, but not attention- or meta-cognitive based mental training is specifically effective to improve emotion regulation capabilities when facing adversity.Neuronal oscillations route external and internal information across brain regions. Communication between these nodes have been well characterized in non-human animals but less is known about their role in the human olfactory system. Using a recently developed and validated EEG-based method to extract signals from the OB and PC sources, we show in healthy human participants that there is a bottom-up information flow from the OB to the PC in the beta and gamma frequency bands, while top-down information from the PC to the OB is facilitated by delta and theta oscillations. Importantly, we demonstrate that there was enough information to decipher odor identity above chance from the low gamma in the OB-PC oscillatory circuit as early as 100 ms after odor onset. These data further our understanding of the critical role of bidirectional information flow in human sensory systems to produce perception. However, future studies are needed to determine what specific odor information is extracted and communicated in the information exchange.Despite theoretical models suggesting developmental changes in neural substrates of cognitive control in adolescence, empirical research has rarely examined intraindividual changes in cognitive control-related brain activation using multi-wave multivariate longitudinal data. We used longitudinal repeated measures of brain activation and behavioral performance during the multi-source interference task (MSIT) from 167 adolescents (53% male) who were assessed annually over four years from ages 13 to 17 years. We applied latent growth modeling to delineate the pattern of brain activation changes over time and to examine longitudinal associations between brain activation and behavioral performance. Some agonists, however, are functionally selective; they activate only a subset of receptors or signalling pathways. Further, we take a perspective on the possible use of biased agonists for tissue and organ-specific activation of muscarinic receptors.This study tested the hypothesis that muscle blood flow restriction reduces muscle and cerebral oxygenation, at rest. In 26 healthy males, aged 33±2 yrs, physiological variables were continuously recorded during a 10-min period in two experimental conditions a) with muscle blood flow restriction through thigh cuffs application inflated at 120 mmHg (With Cuffs, WC) and b) without restriction (No Cuffs, NC). Muscle and cerebral oxygenation were reduced by muscle blood flow restriction as suggested by the increase in both muscle and cerebral deoxygenated hemoglobin (Δ[HHb]; p less then 0.01) and the decrease of muscle and cerebral oxygenation index (Δ[HbDiff]; p less then 0.01). Hemodynamic responses were not affected by such muscle blood flow restriction, whereas baroreflex sensitivity was reduced (p=0.009). The perception of leg discomfort was higher (p less then 0.001) in the WC than in the NC condition. This study suggests that thigh cuffs application inflated at 120 mmHg is an effective method to reduce muscle oxygenation at rest. These changes at the muscular level seem to be sensed by the central nervous system, evoking alterations in cerebral oxygenation and baroreflex sensitivity. The best-characterized QS system is driven by the autoinducer N-acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL), which is produced by AHL synthases (LuxI homologs) and perceived by response regulators (LuxR homologs). Several plant compounds have been shown to directly inhibit LuxI or LuxR. Gaining atomic-level insight into their mode of action and how they interfere with QS enzymes supports the identification and design of novel QS inhibitors. Such information can be gained from molecular modeling and docking simulations. The summary of these interactions shows that plant-derived compounds act as interkingdom cues and that these allomones specifically target bacterial communication systems. The burden of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and RA-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) in recent years has not been well characterized.

In this study, we sought to describe RA and RA-ILD-related mortality rates and trends in the U.S. from 2005-2018, stratified by demographics.

We used the Multiple Cause of Death Database available through the Centers for Disease Control and prevention website which contains data of all deceased U.S. residents. RA and RA-ILD-related deaths were identified using ICD-10 codes. We examined the age-adjusted mortality rates and trends stratified by demographics.

RA and RA-ILD-related mortality rates were higher in females and older age groups. However, the prevalence of ILD was higher in male decedents with RA compared to female decedents with RA (13.3% vs. 8.7%). RA-related mortality rates were the highest in Native Americans followed by Whites. Compared to Whites, Hispanics had lower RA-related mortality rates but higher RA-ILD-related mortality rates. Overall RA-rebgroup of patients with RA-ILD.Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with increased risk of sudden cardiac death, but its role in arrhythmogenesis is not clear. link3 We evaluated contributions of DM duration and hyperglycemia level to development of proarrhythmic electrophysiological changes in the experimental ischemia/reperfusion model. Ventricular epicardial 64-lead mapping and arrhythmia susceptibility were performed in 43 healthy and 55 alloxan diabetic rabbits undergoing 15-min coronary artery occlusion and followed reperfusion. During ischemia, arrhythmia inducibility did not differ between the groups, but the number of reperfusion ventricular tachycardias and/or fibrillations (VT/VFs) was higher in the DM group (14 out of 55) as compared to control (3 out of 43, p=0.017). In the diabetic animals only the DM duration remained an independent predictor of reperfusion VT/VF in multivariate logistic regression analysis (OR 1.060; 95% CI 1.006 1.117; p = 0.029). DM duration was associated with the prolongation of total ventricular activation duration (B 0.152; 95% CI 0.049-0.255; p=0.005) and activation-repolarization intervals (ARIs) (B 0.900; 95% CI 0.315-1.484; p=0.003). The prolonged ARI was the only mapping characteristic predicting reperfusion VT/VF development (OR 1.028; 95% CI 1.009-1.048; p = 0.004). Conclusions The DM duration-dependent prolongation of ventricular repolarization presents a link between DM development and reperfusion VT/VF inducibility.Aging is associated with a gradual loss of lung function due to increased cellular senescence, decreased regenerative capacity, and impaired innate host defense. One important aspect of innate airway epithelial host defense to nonmicrobial triggers is the secretion of alarmins such as IL-33 and activation of type 2 inflammation, which were previously found to depend on activation of the NADPH oxidase (NOX) homolog DUOX1, and redox-dependent signaling pathways that promote alarmin secretion. Here, we demonstrate that normal aging of C57BL/6J mice resulted in markedly decreased lung innate epithelial type 2 responses to exogenous triggers such as the airborne allergen Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, which was associated with marked downregulation of DUOX1, as well as DUOX1-mediated redox-dependent signaling. DUOX1 deficiency was also found to accelerate age-related airspace enlargement and decline in lung function but did not consistently affect other features of lung aging such as senescence-associated inflammation.
