Path of Exile Item Upgrades
Upgrades to items are a common and crucial method to enhance the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.
Often times however upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade equipment due to their requirements.
Armor
Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They improve the stats of the item they're attached to. Upgrades to armor can be found in the world of the game and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Alternately, they can be salvaged from items with upgrade components within them by using an expert or greater salvage kit.
The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it will take on. Upgrading a piece of armor to maximum upgrade level will boost the damage it absorbs. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, therefore it must be heavier.
There are several different types of armor upgrade available in the game. Each one has a distinct effect. Certain upgrades give armor an extra number of health points, while others make it more powerful and lighter. The type of armor upgrade that an item will receive is indicated by the name of the upgrade, as illustrated in the table below.
Some upgrades are magic or a mix of technology and magic which is indicated by the "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges to use. They are referred to as "Charges" entries in the table. These charges are either continuously updated or never expire depending on the upgrade.
Iron Ore is the cheapest method to upgrade your armor. It can be found by exploring and looting small loot chests. Titanium is more expensive, however, it is available through smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, like the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied on high-level armor pieces. These upgrades can give players a significant increases in stats and are well worth the investment.
The player must be aware that upgrading a piece to its max upgrade level will increase its defense value. However, it can also reduce its agility and its speed. It is not recommended to upgrade armor past +9. The defensive boost gained generally isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.
Weapons
Weapon upgrades allow players to improve the effectiveness of specific aspects of the weapon. For example an upgrade can improve the damage that is caused by shotgun shells or the accuracy of the rifle that snipes. Some weapons have special upgrades to improve their inherent qualities. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and decreases the chance of the risk of overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases the velocity of projectiles for greater damage).
The majority of upgrades to weapons require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons, and a whetblade to apply. These are obtained through either completing Side Quests, taking out a certain number of monsters or bosses, or from the Weapon Upgrade NPC located in Central Flarine.
To upgrade a weapon, equipment set piece or Whetblade, you must visit the NPC [ArmorBoboko. Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade fee of a certain amount of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the higher the number of bars you will need to complete the upgrade. The cost of the upgrades will be lower if you have more than one of the relevant upgrade materials.
In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade your weapon and equipment sets has changed a bit. Previously, you could seek out an Upgrade Bench and pay a set number of Bars to upgrade your equipment or weapon to a higher level of rarity. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level at which point the upgrades would be reset.
This is still possible, but it depends heavily on RNG. Instead, you're better off going to the stores and purchasing equipment with low upgrade levels, but excellent base scores and stat distributions. These will then be able to give you the most prestigious benefits and blessings.
To level up quicker, players usually prioritise upgrading their weapons. Players should also upgrade the weapons that their teammates use to boost their strength. For instance, Shepard should consider upgrading the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R to make it more useful when accompanied by experts in biotics like Grunt and Tali.
Jewels
Jewels are used in the armor's sockets and weapons, enhancing the stats of a weapon and providing additional effects. They can be created through the process of jewelry crafting, which is where you combine a gemstone and several reagents at a jewelry table. The higher the quality of the gem, the greater the secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained around the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and occasionally by salvaging Legendary gear. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Prisms and gold.
The Jeweler can enhance the quality of gemstones in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. Based on the tier of the gem it can provide different stat boost when slotted into gear, weapons and jewelry.
All kinds of jewels can be crafted at the Jeweler and Jeweler's Workshop, with the exception of the rare and legendary jewels which require you to be at a high enough level to be able to get them. Jewels can be substituted with another one without damaging the original. You can only replace the jewel once within an item of equipment.
The use of more jewels in a movement will make it feel smoother and is typically done for aesthetic reasons. The jewels can also enhance performance and create a surface harder than steel so that repeated friction caused by pivots does not cause damage to them.
A Glyphmaster can offer glyphs to improve the appearance of your shields and weapons. These provide a small bonus and are able to be swapped easily, but are not guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs are like jewelry and can be upgraded at the Jeweler in exchange for gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs can also be taken out and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like traits and aegis, aren't swappable and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.
Trinkets
Trinkets can provide your hero with various small, but beneficial advantages. They can be acquired starting in the starter areas as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, or by completing road interactions. They can be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.
The first trinket a player can unlock is the cloak. It gives a small but beneficial boost in movement speed and the ability to escape. After that, they can get amulets, rings, and necklaces in the same manner to the way a player obtains weapons and armor. Every piece of equipment has a slot for an upgrade that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and are able to be used on any device. Jewels cannot be upgraded or replaced and are only compatible with certain trinkets.
These trinkets also grant additional buffs and skills that are active even when the character is not fighting. This lets a hero be more efficient while inactive. It also helps compensate for the absence of good team or talent tree slots which are usually filled by the hero's best stats.
As a rule trinket upgrades should be prioritized over BiS (Best in Slot) items you won't replace soon. Also, consider items that have desirable statistics are less significant than the iLevel of the item to be upgraded. This is especially true when an item has multiple stats you'd like to upgrade as it's usually better to upgrade just one important stat than two sub-optimal ones.
item upgrading will often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red trinket at the start of the game. Top and mid players on the other hand, will choose a green or a pink ward, based on the matchup. item upgrading will have a major impact on the hero's abilities to control maps.
In addition to the items listed above, players can also find other trinkets that form of trophies and rewards throughout the game. They can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story, like the main quest of a chapter or killing a particular boss. They can be viewed by selecting the relevant achievement from the reward tab of the hero menu.
