The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has presented challenges in the care of patients with chronic diseases. We identified the challenges faced by Chinese patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) during the pandemic.
An online cross-sectional survey was conducted between March 27 and June 30, 2021.
Of the 2105 valid questionnaire responses, 2,056 patients were from non-lockdown areas. In these areas, 42.8% reduced outside daily activities, 49.4% reduced rehabilitation service use, 39.7% postponed regular follow-ups, and 40.8% reported accelerated motor function decline. These figures generally increased for patients from lockdown areas-67.3% reduced outside daily activities, 44.9% reduced rehabilitation service use, 79.6% postponed regular follow-ups, and 55.1% reported accelerated motor function decline. Ambulation loss was most commonly reported in September and March before 2020; however, this trend was absent in 2020. Regarding the informed prices of disease-modifying drugs in Europe apatients. Healthcare workers should assist patients and establish more robust chronic disease management systems. Collaboration between governmental and non-governmental entities could address the cost of disease-modifying drugs in China and other developing countries.
Although the pathophysiology of swallowing dysfunction in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) remains uncertain, glottal insufficiency is known to be a possible major cause, and other factors due to vagus nerve or recurrent laryngeal nerve damage may contribute to dysphagia or aspiration. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of arytenoid adduction (AA) surgery on the swallowing functions of UVFP patients and to investigate the important role of glottic closure during swallowing.
We prospectively analyzed the data of thirteen patients with UVFP who underwent AA in combination with medialization laryngoplasty (ML) for improving voice quality. The subjects received a series of examinations for not only voice function but also swallowing function and cough strength both preoperatively and approximately 6 months after surgery. The evaluations of voice function included the Voice Handicap Index and aerodynamic measures; the evaluations of swallowing function included the Eating Assessment Touggest an important effect on the dysphagia of UVFP patients who undergo AA combined with ML. In addition, we revealed improvements in swallowing by strengthening incomplete glottic closure; thus, we consider that sufficient glottic closure must play an important role in swallowing function in patients with UVFP.
The findings of our study suggest an important effect on the dysphagia of UVFP patients who undergo AA combined with ML. In addition, we revealed improvements in swallowing by strengthening incomplete glottic closure; thus, we consider that sufficient glottic closure must play an important role in swallowing function in patients with UVFP.
Pressure ulcers are a common adverse event in healthcare. To date, no flowmetry studies have been conducted to compare hyperoxygenated fatty acids (HFA) vs. extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) in alleviating this condition.
To determine and evaluate the effect of the application of HFA vs. EVOO on tissue oxygenation and perfusion in heels under pressure, in healthy persons and in hospitalised patients.
Two-phase experimental study.
Phase 1 will be conducted with healthy subjects, using a randomised, open study design, evaluating an intrasubject control group. Phase 2 will focus on hospitalised subjects, with a randomised, open study group vs. a control group.
This Project is undertaken to identify the mechanisms that intervene in the genesis of pressure ulcers and to determine whether there are differences in outcomes between the application of HFA vs. EVOO as a preventive measure The results of this study are of economic importance (due to the price difference between the products used) and will also impact on usual clinical practice for patients with impaired mobility and liable to suffer from pressure ulcers, by considering an alternative to established preventive measures.

Studies in humans have identified cognitive domains particularly vulnerable to delayed or incomplete recovery after chronic sleep disruption, including sustained vigilance and episodic memory. These findings, in turn, provide a focus for animal model studies to critically test the lasting impact of sleep loss on the brain. Here, we summarize the human response to sleep disruption and then discuss recent findings in animal models examining recovery responses in circuits pertinent to vigilance and memory. We then propose pathways of injury common to various forms of sleep disruption and consider the implications of this injury in aging and in neurodegenerative disorders.Geographic ranges are a fundamental unit of biogeography and macroecology. Increasingly, paleontologists and ecologists alike are reconstructing geographic ranges of species from fossils, in order to understand the long-term processes governing biogeographic and macroevolutionary patterns. As these reconstructions have become increasingly common, uncertainty has arisen over the equivalency of paleo-ranges and modern ranges. Here, we argue geographic ranges are time-averaged at all temporal scales, and reflect the biotic and abiotic processes operating across the equivalent range of time and space scales. This conceptual framework integrates the study of geographic ranges reconstructed using modern and ancient data, and highlights the potential for ranges to illuminate processes responsible for diversity patterns over intervals spanning days to tens of millions of years of Earth history. The Southern Hemisphere differs from the Northern Hemisphere in many aspects. However, most ecological and evolutionary research is conducted in the Northern Hemisphere and its conclusions are extrapolated to the entire globe. Therefore, unique organismal and evolutionary characteristics of the south are overlooked. We use ornithology to show the importance of including a southern perspective. We present examples of plumage pigmentation, brood-parasitic nestling ejection, flightlessness, female song, and female aggression modulated by progesterone as complementary models for investigating fundamental biological questions. More research in the Southern Hemisphere, together with increased cooperation among researchers across the hemispheres and within the Southern Hemisphere, will provide a greater global outlook into ecology and evolution.
The long-term situation of children with spinal cord injury (SCI) was investigated, and suggestions for helping them better return to the society were provided.
SCI patients less than 18 years old hospitalized in Beijing Boai Hospital from January 2011 to December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Information including motor function, complications, characteristic changes, self-care abilities, school attendance and social participation were collected by telephone interview and electronic questionnaire. All the answers were statistically analyzed.
A total of 86 cases were enrolled, 77 girls and 9 boys, with a median injury age of 6 years and 2 months. The follow-up time was 3-130 months. The main cause of trauma in these children was sport injury (66.3%), the thoracic spinal cord was involved the most (91.9%), and complete SCIs accounted for the majority (76.7%). In terms of complications, children with complete SCIs were more likely to have urinary incontinence, constipation and characteristic changes, and restrict school attendance and social interaction. Comprehensive rehabilitation after injury is a systematic work. Medical staff and caregivers should not only pay attention to neurological function, but also help them improve self-care abilities. It is also important to balance rehabilitation training and school work and social participation.
SCIs impair physical structures and function of children, affect their independence in daily living, and restrict school attendance and social interaction. It is also important to balance rehabilitation training and school work and social participation. The aim of this study was to present a novel ultrasound-guided minimally invasive technique for the treatment of extracapsular condylar fractures and evaluate its long-term outcomes. Seven patients with isolated extracapsular condylar fractures with a noncomminuted proximal segment were included in this study. Ultrasound was used for identification of the position of the bone segments and intraoperative confirmation of appropriate reduction. Reduction of the displaced segments was performed using threaded K-wires under ultrasonographic visualization. The bone segments were stabilized using an adjustable modified external fixator designed by us, which allows manipulation of the segments in three planes intraoperatively and postoperatively, if needed. The functional outcomes of patients were evaluated. Patients treated with ultrasound-guided percutaneous reduction and external fixation achieved normal occlusion with satisfactory mouth opening (>35 mm) and had no pain during mandibular movements at long-term follow-up. None of the patients had any signs of facial nerve injury. Within the limitations of the study it seems that the poposed approch might be an alternative to the open approach in selected cases. We aimed to evaluate the role of esophagectomy in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma with clinically complete response (cCR) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. learn more Data of patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who achieved cCR after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy between October 2008 and September 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. The criteria for cCR include (1) tumor resolution on computed tomography, (2) maximum standardized uptake value decrement >35% on positron-emission tomography-computed tomography scan, and (3) a negative endoscopic biopsy result. Overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were compared between patients who received surveillance only (surveillance) and those who underwent surgery. A total of 154 patients with cCR, including 54 in the surveillance group and 100 in the surgery group, were included. The 5-year OS rates in the surveillance and surgery groups were 47.9% and 36.9 %, respectively (P= 0.210). The 5-year DFS rates were 38.1% and 28.
