To estimate (1) associations between self-reported COVID-19, hand-washing, smoking status, e-cigarette use and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) use and (2) the extent to which COVID-19 has prompted smoking and vaping quit attempts and more smoking inside the home.

Cross-sectional household surveys.

A representative sample of the population in England from April to May 2020. The sample included 3179 adults aged ≥18years.

Participants who reported that they definitely or thought they had coronavirus were classified as having self-reported COVID-19. Participants were asked how often they wash their hands after returning home, before preparing foods, before eating or before touching their face. They were also asked whether, due to COVID-19, they had (i) attempted to quit smoking, (ii) attempted to quit vaping and (iii) changed the amount they smoke inside the home.

Odds of self-reported COVID-19 were significantly greater among current smokers [20.9%, adjusted odds ratio (aOR)=1.34, 95% confidence inte-cigarettes. Engagement in hand-washing appears to be high, regardless of nicotine or tobacco use. A minority of past-year smokers and current e-cigarette users, respectively, report attempting to quit smoking/vaping due to COVID-19.
In England, current smokers and long-term ex-smokers appear to have higher odds of self-reported COVID-19 compared with never smokers in adjusted analyses, but there were no large differences between people who used nicotine replacement therapy or e-cigarettes. Engagement in hand-washing appears to be high, regardless of nicotine or tobacco use. A minority of past-year smokers and current e-cigarette users, respectively, report attempting to quit smoking/vaping due to COVID-19.
Currently, synthetic antioxidants have been widely used to retard lipid and protein oxidation in the meat industry. However, consumers have concerns about these synthetic antioxidants because of their potential toxicological effects. Accordingly, natural antioxidants can be used as a result of their health safety compared to synthetic antioxidants. The present research aimed to assess the protective effects of purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) extract (PE) against lipid and protein oxidation under chilled storage for 12 days. Rabbit meat patties were divided into five experimental groups control (without extract), butylated hydroxytoluene BHT (with 0.02% BHT, w/w) and the different concentrations of PE (0.1%, 0.3% and 0.5%, w/w) added to rabbit meat patty labeled as 0.1% PE, 0.3% PE and 0.5% PE groups, respectively. 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, lipid oxidation and protein oxidation were determined, and kinetic models were employed.

PE showed the strongest DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity, and the half maximal inhibitory concentrations (i.e. IC
) of DPPH and ABTS radicals were 5.112 ± 0.384 and 12.607 ± 2.130 μg mL
, respectively. Samples that were treated with PE showed low lipid and protein oxidation. see more Furthermore, the results of kinetic models indicated that PE could reduce the rates of lipid and protein oxidation.

PE showed a preservative effect with respect exerting a protective effect against lipid and protein oxidation under chilled storage conditions. Our findings demonstrate the strong potential of PE as a natural antioxidant in meat and meat products. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Bridged polycyclic skeletons are often considered one of most challenging structures in organic synthesis. This Minireview summarizes the recent progress on synthesis of bridged polycyclic skeletons by transition-metal-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond-forming reaction. Four main ring-forming strategies including connection via olefin or carbonyl functionality, enolate intermediacy, C-H functionality, and aryl functionality are detailed and some effective methods are discussed with particular emphasis on reaction design and mechanism. In this study, we established a new pattern for differentiating and comprehensively evaluating the quality of fermented Cordyceps sinensis based on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprint analysis combined with similar analysis (SA), principal component analysis (PCA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), and the quantitative analysis of multicomponents by single marker (QAMS). These methods indicated that fermented Cordyceps sinensis samples could be categorized into one class by PCA and HCA. The fingerprints of fermented Cordyceps sinensis were established, and four HPLC peaks were identified as ergosterol, daucosterol, stigmasterol, and β-sitosterol in Jinshuibao capsules and tablets (two products of fermented Cordyceps sinensis). Ergosterol was chosen as the internal reference substance, and the relative correction factors (RCFs) between ergosterol and the other three sterols were calculated using the QAMS method. Moreover, the accuracy of the QAMS method was confirmed by comparing the relative error between the results of the method used with those of an external standard method (ESM). No significant difference between the two methods was observed. The total sterols content in Jinshuibao products were calculated by the QAMS method, and the total sterols content of the two products were similar. This study showed that the method established herein was efficient and successful in the identification fermented Cordyceps sinensis and may further act to facilitate systematic quality control of fermented Cordyceps sinensis products.
The clinical presentation of COVID-19 ranges from a mild, self-limiting disease, to multiple organ failure and death. Most severe COVID-19 cases present low lymphocytes counts and high leukocytes counts, and accumulated evidence suggests that in a subgroup of patients presenting severe COVID-19, there may be a hyperinflammatory response driving a severe hypercytokinaemia which may be, at least in part, signalling the presence of an underlying endothelial dysfunction. In this context, available data suggest a prognostic role of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in various inflammatory diseases and oncological processes. Following this rationale, we hypothesized that NLR, as a marker of endothelial dysfunction, may be useful in identifying patients with a poor prognosis in hospitalized COVID-19 cases.

A retrospective observational study performed at Hospital Universitario HM Puerta del Sur, Madrid, Spain, which included 119 patients with COVID-19 from 1 March to 31 March 2020. Patients were categorized according to WHO R&D Expert Group.
