V.Carbon monoxide (CO) is a well-known "toxic gas". It represents a toxic inhalation hazard at high concentration and is commonly found in polluted air. However, a series of recent studies have suggested that low concentration of CO can also produce protective functions. This study was performed to investigate the association between ambient CO exposure and vaginitis outpatient visits. Daily baseline outpatient data of vaginitis from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2015 were obtained from Xi'an, a heavily-polluted metropolis in China. The over-dispersed Poisson generalized additive model was applied to discover the relations between short-term ambient CO exposure and the number of vaginitis outpatient visits by adjusting day of the week and weather conditions. A total of 16,825 outpatient hospital visits for vaginitis were recorded. The mean daily concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) was well below Chinese and WHO guidelines. During the study period, increased levels of ambient CO was associated with reduced outpatient-visits through concurrent to lag 5 days, and the most significant association was evidenced at lag 05. A 0.1 mg/m3 increase in daily average CO at lag 05 corresponded to -1.25% (95%CI -1.85%, -0.65%) change in outpatient-visits for vaginitis. Moreover, the association was more significant in those women aged 20-29 years. After adjustment for PM10, PM2.5, SO2, and NO2, and O3, the negative associations of CO with vaginitis kept significant, suggesting relative stability of effect estimates. In summary, this is the first evidence that increased ambient CO exposure can be related to reduced daily outpatient visits for vaginitis. The results of our study may not only help to establish more comprehensive understanding of the health effects of ambient air on vaginitis and other gynecological diseases, but also provide a clue to new potential interventions. The country's smallholder, rainfed agriculture renders its food production system extremely vulnerable to climate variability and extremes. In this study, we investigate the impact of past climate variability and change on the yields of five major cereal crops in Ethiopia-barley, maize, millet, sorghum, and wheat-during the period 1979-2014 using the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) crop model. The model is calibrated at both the site and agroecological-zone scales. In this study, we compared the stoichiometric characters of soil C, N, and P in a mature Chinese fir (C. lanceolata) plantation under four forest management approaches uncut as a control (NC), clear-cutting (CC), controlled burning after clear-cutting (CCB) and conversion into a tea garden (TG). We measured the total C (TC), total N (TN), and total P (TP) contents and evaluated the ratios of CN, CP, NP, and CNP in each treatment. The results showed that (1) the contents of TC and TN in all management approaches decreased with increasing soil depth, while the TP content in NC, CC, and CCB decreased at first, then increased. More importantly, there was no significant difference in TP content under the four management approaches. (2) The ratios of CN, CP, NP, and CNP decreased with increasing soil depth. Interestingly, the ratio of CN was lower than that of CP in every management approach. (3) Despite the different management approaches (NC, CC, CCB, and TG), the ratios of soil CNP were relatively stable, which were 2441, 2641, 2131, and 2131, respectively. CCB showed the greatest negative effect on soil TC, TN, and TP contents, suggesting it might be beneficial to avoid this approach for Chinese fir management. In this review and meta-analysis, we assessed the contemporary literature to clarify whether tonsil surgery has an effect on dentofacial development in children. METHODS Studies with children aged 3-10 years who underwent tonsil surgery and were compared to non-operated controls using dentofacial parameters were included to the review. Search strategies were planned for specific databases. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to assess the risk of bias. A meta-analysis was performed when the data was methodologically homogenous enough to be pooled.
