Language-related potentials are increasingly used to objectify (mal)adaptive neuroplasticity in stroke-related aphasia recovery. Using preattentive [mismatch negativity (MMN)] and attentive (P300) phonologically related paradigms, neuroplasticity in sensory memory and cognitive functioning underlying phonological processing can be investigated. In aphasic patients, MMN amplitudes are generally reduced for speech sounds with a topographic source distribution in the right hemisphere. For P300 amplitudes and latencies, both normal and abnormal results have been reported. The current study investigates the preattentive and attentive phonological discrimination ability in 17 aphasic patients (6 monolinguals and 11 bilinguals, aged 41-71 years) at two timepoints during aphasia recovery. Between the two timepoints, a significant improvement of behavioral language performance in both languages is observed in all patients with the MMN latency at timepoint 1 as a predictive factor for aphasia recovery. In contrast to monolinguals, bilingual aphasic patients have a higher probability to improve their processing speed during rehabilitation, resulting in a shortening of the MMN latency over time, which sometimes progresses toward the normative values.Introduction Father-infant interactions are important for optimal offspring outcomes. Moreover, paternal perinatal psychopathology is associated with psychological and developmental disturbances in the offspring, and this risk may increase when both parents are unwell. While, the father-offspring relationship is a plausible mechanism of risk transmission, there is presently no "gold standard" tool for assessing the father-offspring relationship. Therefore, we systematically searched and reviewed the application and performance of tools used to assess the father-offspring relationship from pregnancy to 24-months postnatal. Methods Four electronic databases (including MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Maternity and Infant Care Database, and CINAHL) were searched. Selected articles included evidence of father-offspring relationship assessment in relation to parental perinatal psychopathology and/or offspring outcomes. Data was extracted and synthesized according to the following (i) evidence supporting the performance of toolsation specific to fathers. Furthermore, various elements influencing tool performance were recognized-including variation in tool characteristics (e.g., relationship dimensions assessed, assessment mode, and scoring formats) and study specific methodological aspects, (e.g., setting and study design, sample characteristics, timing and nature of parental psychopathology, and offspring outcomes). Conclusion Given the strengths and limitations of each mode of assessment, future studies may benefit from a multimethod approach to assessing the father-offspring relationship, which may provide a more accurate assessment than one method alone. The accurate measurement of brain activity by Brain-Machine-Interfaces (BMI) and closed-loop Deep Brain Stimulators (DBS) is one of the most important steps in communicating between the brain and subsequent processing blocks. In conventional chest-mounted systems, frequently used in DBS, a significant amount of artifact can be induced in the sensing interface, often as a common-mode signal applied between the case and the sensing electrodes. Attenuating this common-mode signal can be a serious challenge in these systems due to finite common-mode-rejection-ratio (CMRR) capability in the interface. Emerging BMI and DBS devices are being developed which can mount on the skull. Mounting the system on the cranial region can potentially suppress these induced physiological signals by limiting the artifact amplitude. In this study, we model the effect of artifacts by focusing on cardiac activity, using a current- source dipole model in a torso-shaped volume conductor. check details Performing finite element simulation with the dilation of closed-loop DBS and BMI, including the choice of biomarkers, the system design requirements, and the surgical placement of the device relative to artifact sources.Road traffic accidents (RTA) account for a significant proportion of mortality and morbidity worldwide, especially the developing countries. 'Hidden pandemics' such as deaths due to RTA often receive minimal attention globally. If not addressed adequately, the forecast looks bleak, especially for the developing countries in the coming decades. Healthcare professionals have an important role in advocating measures to reduce injuries following RTA and, along with like-minded social individuals, can act as a powerful lobby to implement change. Following a 'Public Interest Litigation or PIL' by the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA) in 2012 - which challenged the Government to accept responsibility for this glaring problem and form an apex body to enforce road safety - the Supreme Court of India identified the existing road-safety laws to be inadequate. It created an 'Empowered Committee' which oversaw various new road safety measures implemented by respective state governments. A public movement called 'UYIR' (meaning 'life' in Tamil) was launched at Coimbatore to reduce RTA. Early results following the implementation of this program showed promising results with a reduction in major accidents. It emphasized that well-planned programs involving the general public could be the way forward in reducing accidents across the country. link2 Hence, Social Advocacy is crucial when an individual or group supports and influences political, economic, and social decisions. Such advocacy aims to gain support in an adverse environment to create the necessary change for the better. We show that the Virasoro fusion kernel is equal to Ruijsenaars' hypergeometric function up to normalization. More precisely, we prove that the Virasoro fusion kernel is a joint eigenfunction of four difference operators. We find a renormalized version of this kernel for which the four difference operators are mapped to four versions of the quantum relativistic hyperbolic Calogero-Moser Hamiltonian tied with the root system B C 1 . We consequently prove that the renormalized Virasoro fusion kernel and the corresponding quantum eigenfunction, the (renormalized) Ruijsenaars hypergeometric function, are equal.NUP98 fusion proteins cause leukemia via unknown molecular mechanisms. All NUP98 fusion proteins share an intrinsically disordered region (IDR) in the NUP98 N terminus, featuring repeats of phenylalanine-glycine (FG), and C-terminal fusion partners often function in gene control. We investigated whether mechanisms of oncogenic transformation by NUP98 fusion proteins are hardwired in their protein interactomes. Affinity purification coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) and confocal imaging of five NUP98 fusion proteins expressed in human leukemia cells revealed that shared interactors were enriched for proteins involved in biomolecular condensation and that they colocalized with NUP98 fusion proteins in nuclear puncta. We developed biotinylated isoxazole-mediated condensome MS (biCon-MS) to show that NUP98 fusion proteins alter the global composition of biomolecular condensates. An artificial FG-repeat-containing fusion protein phenocopied the nuclear localization patterns of NUP98 fusion proteins and their capability to drive oncogenic gene expression programs. Thus, we propose that IDR-containing fusion proteins combine biomolecular condensation with transcriptional control to induce cancer. Many established, but also potential future applications of NiTi-based shape memory alloys (SMA) in biomedical devices and solid-state refrigeration require long fatigue life with 107-109 duty cycles1,2. However, improving the fatigue resistance of NiTi often compromises other mechanical and functional properties3,4. Existing efforts to improve the fatigue resistance of SMA include composition control for coherent phase boundaries5-7 and microstructure control such as precipitation8,9 and grain-size reduction3,4. Here, we extend the strategy to the nanoscale and improve fatigue resistance of NiTi via a hybrid heterogenous nanostructure. link3 We produced a superelastic NiTi nanocomposite with crystalline and amorphous phases via severe plastic deformation and low-temperature annealing. The as-produced nanocomposite possesses a recoverable strain of 4.3% and a yield strength of 2.3 GPa. In cyclic compression experiments, the nanostructured NiTi micropillars endure over 108 reversible-phase-transition cycles under a stress of 1.8 GPa. We attribute the enhanced properties to the mutual strengthening of nanosized amorphous and crystalline phases where the amorphous phase suppresses dislocation slip in the crystalline phase while the crystalline phase hinders shear band propagation in the amorphous phase. The synergy of the properties of crystalline and amorphous phases at the nanoscale could be an effective method to improve fatigue resistance and strength of SMA.The robustness of carbon nanomaterials and their potential for ultrahigh permeability has drawn substantial interest for separation processes. However, graphene oxide membranes (GOms) have demonstrated limited viability due to instabilities in their microstructure that lead to failure under cross-flow conditions and applied hydraulic pressure. Here we present a highly stable and ultrapermeable zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-nanocrystal-hybridized GOm that is prepared by ice templating and subsequent in situ crystallization of ZIF-8 at the nanosheet edges. The selective growth of ZIF-8 in the microporous defects enlarges the interlayer spacings while also imparting mechanical integrity to the laminate framework, thus producing a stable microstructure capable of maintaining a water permeability of 60 l m-2 h-1 bar-1 (30-fold higher than GOm) for 180 h. Furthermore, the mitigation of microporous defects via ZIF-8 growth increased the permselectivity of methyl blue molecules sixfold. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance was employed to characterize the porous structure of our membranes and confirm the tailored growth of ZIF-8. Our technique for tuning the membrane microstructure opens opportunities for developing next-generation nanofiltration membranes. The past 30 years have seen progress in the development of Pt-based nanocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction, and some are now in production on a commercial basis and used for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) for automotives and other applications. Further improvements in catalytic activity are required for wider uptake of PEFCs, however. In laboratories, researchers have developed various catalysts that have much higher activities than commercial ones, and these state-of-the-art catalysts have potential to improve energy conversion efficiencies and reduce the usage of platinum in PEFCs. There are several technical issues that must be solved before they can be applied in fuel cell vehicles, which require a high power density and practical durability, as well as high efficiency. In this Review, the development history of Pt-based nanocatalysts and recent analytical studies are summarized to identify the origin of these technical issues. Promising strategies for overcoming those issues are also discussed.
