CD163, a surface hemoglobin-haptoglobin scavenger receptor, is expressed on macrophages and monocytes and up-regulated during macrophage activation. This study aimed to evaluate CD163 in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis patients as a diagnostic and prognostic marker in such patients.
Serum samples were collected from 41 NAFLD patients and 14 healthy controls. All cases were subjected to clinical assessment, abdominal ultrasound examination, laboratory assessment including liver function and enzymes, kidney function, and lipid profile. Fib-4 and NAFLD fibrosis score were calculated for all patients. Also, serum levels of CD163 were detected by ELISA technique.
The present study showed that BMI, NAFLD fibrosis score (NFS), uric acid, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels were significantly elevated in the NAFLD cases compared with healthy controls (P<0.05). The serum level of sCD163 was considerably higher in NAFLD cases (9.97±9.97ng/ml) vs. healthy controls (1.87±0.83ng/ml) (p<0.001). Circulating level of sCD163 was significantly higher in the obese-diabetic subjects and diabetic non-obese patients as compared with the lean healthy subjects (11.15±7.69ng/ml) and 11.46±13.83ng/ml vs. 1.87±0.83ng/ml, P<0.05; respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of this marker was 85.4%, and 92.9 for distinguishing patients with NAFLD in obese and/or diabetic subjects from healthy controls.

To examine the effects of aerobic training (AT) and resistance training (RT) compared to standard care on glycemic control in South Asian Sri Lankan adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM).
Randomized controlled trial (RCT) with parallel-group design recruited 86 sedentary Sri Lankans (aged 35-65 years) with T2DM into aerobic training (AT, n=28), resistance training (RT, n=28) and control (CN, n=30) groups. Supervised progressive exercise training consisting of 75min per session, 2 days per week for 12 weeks was conducted. The primary outcome was pre- and post-intervention absolute change in hemoglobin A1c (HBA1c). Secondary outcomes were serum lipids, liver enzymes, chronic inflammatory status, anthropometry, body composition and blood pressure.
The absolute change in HbA1c of RT vs. CN was-0.08% (95% CI, 0.8% to-0.7%, p=0.8) and AT vs. CN was-0.22% (95% CI, 0.95% to-0.5%). Subgroup analysis (n=49) with a high baseline HbA1c (>7.5%), absolute reduction in HbA1c in exercise groups were statistically significant (RT vs. CN was-0.37%; 95% CI 1.3% to-0.6%, p=0.04 and AT vs. selleck inhibitor CN was-0.57%; 95% CI 1.7% to-0.6%, p=0.03). The effect sizes (total and subgroup HbA1c >7.5%) ranged from 0.7 to 1.0 in AT, 0.4 to 1.1 in RT compared to 0.35 to 0.6 for the CN. Secondary outcomes did not significantly differ among groups.

Health care workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of getting infected with Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and suboptimal preventive practices have been identified as an important risk factor in this regard. This study was done to evaluate the preventive practices being followed by health care workers and identify reasons for suboptimal compliance.
A cross-sectional survey was done in HCWs belonging to various occupational roles and socio-cultural backgrounds across India through online platforms and telephonic interviews from July 30, 2020 to August 30, 2020. A scientifically designed and pre-validated questionnaire with good validity (CVR=0.87, S-CVI/Av=0.978) and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient=0.85) was used.
The responses of 956 participants were analysed. Various suboptimal practices like touching outer surface of masks, lack of social distancing in cafeteria and duty rooms, inability to wash hands for adequate duration and properly follow steps of hand hygiene, inability to don and doff PPE properly, carrying PPE to duty rooms before completely doffing, use of personal mobile phones during duty and improper sleep were identified. link2 Lack of knowledge, long duty hours, shortage of PPE, high patient workload, and casual attitude regarding own safety were identified as important barriers. link3 Resident doctors and paramedical staff in the age group 18-30 years reported lower adherence.

Many previous studies have characterized pitch perception in cochlear implant (CI) users to be poor which may be due to the limited spectro-temporal resolution and/or spectral warping with electric hearing compared to acoustic hearing (AH). Poor pitch perception in CIs has been shown to distort melodic interval perception. To characterize this interval distortion, we recruited CI users with either normal (single sided deafness, SSD) or limited (bimodal) AH in the non-implanted ear. The contralateral AH allowed for a stable reference with which to compare melodic interval perception in the CI ear, within the same listener. Melodic interval perception was compared across acoustic and electric hearing in 9 CI listeners (4 bimodal and 5 SSD). Participants were asked to rank the size of a probe interval presented to the CI ear to a reference interval presented to the contralateral AH ear using a method of constant so significant differences in the patterns of results were observed between bimodal and SSD CI users. The present data show that much larger intervals were needed with the CI to match contralateral AH reference intervals. As such, input melodic patterns are likely to be perceived as frequency compressed and/or warped with electric hearing, with less variation among notes in the pattern. The high inter-subject variability in CI interval distortion suggests that CI signal processing should be optimized for individual CI users.The presence of anti-citrullinated protein/peptide antibodies (ACPA) and epitope spreading across the target autoantigens is a unique feature of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). ACPA are present in the peripheral blood for several years prior to the onset of arthritis and clinical classification of RA. ACPA recognize multiple citrullinated proteins, including histone H3 (H3). Intracellular citrullination of H3 in neutrophils and T cells is known to regulate immune cell function by promoting neutrophil extracellular trap formation and citrullinated autoantigen release as well as regulating the Th2/Th17 T cell phenotypic balance. However, the roles of H3 citrullination in other immune cells are not fully elucidated. We aimed to explore H3 citrullination and cytokine/metabolomic signatures in peripheral blood immune cells from subjects prior to and after the onset of RA, at baseline and in response to ex vivo toll-like receptor (TLR) stimulation. Here, we analyzed 13 ACPA (+) subjects without arthritis but at-risk forand generation of citrullinated autoantigens.An efficient dispersive solid-phase extraction method was developed to trace pesticide residues in commonly consumed vegetables. In this method, UiO-66 with uniform micropores was used as sorbent, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was applied to detect the pesticides. Thanks to the size sieving action of uniform micropores, UiO-66 directly extracted the target pesticides from vegetable matrices and excluded the relatively large matrix compounds. This well eliminated the matrix effect. The important experimental conditions were evaluated by orthogonal array experimental design. In optimized conditions, good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.99), detection limits (0.4-2.0 ng/g), recoveries (60.9-117.5%) and precision (relativestandarddeviations less then 14.6%) were achieved. Moreover, the sorbent UiO-66 can be reused more than 20 times. These demonstrate a simple, reliable and robust method to screen the pesticide residues in vegetables. Furthermore, the validated method was applied to detect the pesticides in various organic and conventional vegetables.The effects of mulberry anthocyanins (MAs) on the digestibility of whey proteins (WP) in freshly-prepared and stored energy balls were studied. Results showed that MAs increased digestibility of the energy balls by increasing their hydrolysis-degree, soluble peptides-fractions, and decreasing their particle's size and agglomeration. To understand the mechanism of the promoting and/or inhibiting digestive effects of MAs, secondary structure alterations and binding of WP-MAs-mixtures were therefore measured. Results revealed that MAs could noncovalently/covalently interact with WP and form WP-MAs-adducts. This interaction seemed to be responsible for the alterations in the secondary structure of WP which could promote the digestibility of the energy balls subsequently. MAs also partially unfolded the structure of digested-WP through fluctuating their α-helix and β-sheet. It was concluded that the unfolding in WP-structure induced by MAs-interactions might increase accessibility of the peptide bonds to the digestive enzymes and consequentially facilitate the protein's digestibility in the energy balls.The aim of this paper is to statistically validate the analytical curves of a chromatography method to identify and quantify azoxystrobin, difenoconazole and propiconazole residues in banana pulp, using QuEChERS and GC-SQ/MS. A matrix-matched calibration was used and analytical curves were estimated by weighted least squares regression (WLS), confirming heteroscedasticity for all compounds. Statistical tests were performed to confirm the quality adjustment of the proposed linear model. The correlation coefficient for azoxystrobin, difenoconazole and propiconazole were, respectively, 0.9985, 0.9966 and 0.9997 (concentration range 0.05 and 2.0 mg kg-1). The limits of detection and quantification were, respectively, between 0.007 and 0.066 mg kg-1, and between 0.022 and 0.199 mg kg-1, below the maximum limits stipulated by Brazilian, American, and European legislation. Only difenoconazole had an insignificant matrix effect (6.8%). Thus, the weighted least squares method is shown to be a safe linear regression model, providing greater reliability of the results.
