Propolis isa sticky, resinous substance produced by honeybees from various plants. Various biological properties of propolis and its extracts have been recognized in previous studies including the antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, hepatoprotective, antitumor, antibacterial and antimycotic properties. This study aimed to summarize the effect of propolis on metabolic parameters in human adults using systematic review and meta-analysis.

A comprehensive systematic search was performed in ISI Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar up to July 2020 for controlled clinical trials evaluating the impact of propolis on lipid profile and liver enzyme biomarkers. A random effects model was used to calculate the weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) as the difference between the mean for the intervention and control groups.

The present meta-analysis included six randomized controlled trials. There was significant reduction in Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) in comparison to the control groups (WMD=-2.01; 95% CI -3.93--0.10; p=0.039). However, a non-significant effect was observed in Triglycerides (TG), Total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), High-density lipoprotein (HDL) (WMD=-0.05 mg/dl; 95% CI -0.27-0.18; p=0.688; WMD=7.08 mg/dl; 95% CI -37.31-51.46; p=0.755; WMD=-0.94 mg/dl; 95% CI -6.64-4.77; p=0.747; WMD=3.14 mg/dl; 95% CI -1.84-8.13; p=0.216, respectively).

Current meta-analysis revealed that propolis supplementation can reduce AST; nevertheless, there was no significant effect on lipid profile indices and ALT.

It is of interest to investigate the anti-proliferative effect of β-sitosterol (BS) on human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cell line.

β-sitosterol treatments (0.6 and 1.2 mM/ml) were done in HepG2 and after 24 hr, cell viability was evaluated by MTT assay. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulating potential of BS was assessed by dichloro-dihydro-fluorescein diacetate staining. Morphology related to apoptosis was investigated by acridine orange and ethidium bromide dual staining. Cytochrome c and caspase 3 expressions were evaluated by immunofluorescence and western blot analyses.

β-sitosterol induced cytotoxicity (p<0.001) and intracellular ROS in HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. BS treatments accumulated induced intracellular ROS accumulation which led to membrane damage and mitochondrial toxicity. At the molecular level, BS treatments induced cytochrome c release from mitochondria and enhanced the protein expressions (p<0.05 vs 0.6 mM/ml and p<0.001 vs 1.2 mM/ml) of both caspase 3 and cleaved caspase 3.

The patients usually suffer from primary or metastatic tumors, and about half of the tumors have hormone secretion function to cause Cushing's syndrome (CS) and hypercortisolism. The optimal management and clinical outcomes of ACC remain ill-defined due to the rarity of the disease. Due to the failure of effective treatment, surgery remains the main treatment for ACC, which includes distant resectable metastases and ACC recurrent. We reported a 34-year-old woman who was diagnosed with left-sided ACC at another hospital and then underwent left adrenalectomy for ACC 2 years ago. Then she was admitted to our hospital with CS caused by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) secretion from an ACC metastatic to the liver. She underwent a complete resection of the tumors in the liver and was discharged without any severe complications after hormone replacement therapy. Unfortunately, six months after the hepatectomy, she eventually died due to progressive deterioration and the refusal of further treatment. ACC is a rare and challenging disease with few durable systemic options. Due to the difficulty of full cure, prompt serial follow-up after the operation is probably crucial for a better prognosis. We present the clinicopathologic features and treatments of two cases of extragonadal yolk sac tumor (EGYST) detected in young females, including one in the myometrium admitted in 2013 and another in the serosal layer of the anterior wall of uterus admitted in 2019. The following details were recorded patient age, clinical presentation, tumor location, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage (where applicable), histologic patterns including Schiller-Duval (SD) bodies, other germ cell or somatic components, immunoperoxidase results, treatment, and outcome. The patients were aged 18 and 32 years old, both displayed the clinical manifestation of pain in the lower abdomen, tumor sizes were 10 and 8 cm, respectively, and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) was significantly increased (1,210-20,251.0 ng/mL). Both participants underwent surgery and typical SD bodies were observed in postoperative pathology. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) results indicated that they were AFP positive (+) and Sal-like protein 4 (SALL4) (+). Both patients received multi-line chemotherapy after surgery, and participant 2 received targeted therapy and immunotherapy. At 36 months after surgery, one patient died, and the other was still receiving treatment. The benefit of germ cell appropriate chemotherapy in somatically derived EGYST has not been fully elucidated. Our report first showed that it is possible to reduce the recurrence rate and improve the prognosis of patients with EGYST by adding targeted therapy and immunotherapy (bevacizumab + tislelizumab) to traditional chemotherapy regimens.
Dachengqi decoction (DCQD), one of classic prescription of Chinese herbal medicine has been widely used in clinic to treat severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). The damage of pancreatic microcirculation plays key pathogenesis of SAP. However, little is known about the molecular pharmacological activity of DCQD on pancreatic microcirculation in SAP.

Sodium taurodeoxycholate and cerulein were used to establish model of SAP in vitro and
, respectively. The pancreatic pathological morphology, wet weight ratio, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, cell viability and microcirculatory function of the pancreas, as well as serum lipase and amylase expressions were evaluated. The expression levels of SIRT1, acety-HMGB1, TLR-4, HMGB1, IL-23, IL-17A, neutrophil chemokines (KC, LIX, and MIP-2), and inflammation-related factors (IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α), the translocation of HMGB1 and the interaction of SIRT-HMGB1 in the pancreas and serum were determined by ELISA real-time PCR, western blotting and immunoprecipitation.

studelying on the HMGB1/TLR-4 way.

DCQD treatment improves SAP-induced pancreatic microcirculatory dysfunction by inhibiting neutrophil-mediated inflammation via inactivating HMGB1-TLR-4-IL-23-IL-17A signaling by targeting SIRT1.

In recent years, according to global statistics, breast cancer is the main disease affecting women. Ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted biopsy (VAB) has become a frequently used method for breast cancer detection because of its accuracy, simplicity, and fewer complications.

In PubMed, Medline, EMbase and Cochrane central register of controlled trials, the retrieval time was from the establishment of the database to March 2021, and the keywords included breast tumor, breast cancer-related diseases, breast lesions, vacuum-assisted breast biopsy, sensitivity and specificity. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.3 software provided by the Cochrane Collaboration.

A total of 10 articles were included using a random-effects model that pooled the sensitivity, specificity, and other accuracy measures of VAB. The summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) characteristic curve was used to summarize the overall accuracy. The sensitivity range was 0.94 to 1.00 (mean, 0.981; 95% CI, 0.972-0.987) with a specificity range of 0.87-1.00 (mean, 0.999; 95% CI, 0.997-0.999). The preoperative platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) was 93.84 (95% CI, 41.55-211.95), the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was 0.05 (95% CI, 0.03-0.09), the sensitivity and specificity of χ
were 37.10 (P=0.011) and 32.00 (P=0.043), respectively, while those of PLR, NLR, and duration of response (DOR) were 46.98 (P=0.001), 54.92 (P=0.001), and 43.49 (P=0.002), respectively. Differences were considerable.

In this meta-analysis, a total of 10 articles were included. VAB is an accurate type of biopsy to detect female breast cancer. The results of the meta-analysis were stable, and VAB had high sensitivity (98%) and specificity (nearly 100%).

Hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT) is a common sequela of anterior neck surgeries. While the acute risks of HypoPT are well known, emerging evidence is beginning to define the risks chronic HypoPT poses to patients. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate that risk and give more insight into its consequences.

A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed, searching EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus for studies published up to July 1, 2020 and reported following PRISMA guidelines. Pooled analysis was estimated using the Mantel-Haenszel method and a random-effects model. A sub-analysis of the pooled data for each morbidity was performed and demonstrated in forest plots.

Patients with postsurgical chronic HypoPT had a high risk of cardiac morbidities [odds ratio (OR) =1.43; 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.21 to 1.70; P<0.001] in the absence of elevated risk of cardiac arrhythmias (OR =1.35, 95% CI 0.96 to 1.79, P=0.08). Analysis also showed higher odds of developing renal disease (OR =4.85, 95% CI 3.54 to 6.67, P<0.001), renal stones (OR =3.86, 95% CI 1.81 to 8.23, P<0.001), seizures (OR =2.41, 95% CI 1.66 to 3.5, P<0.001), mental health problems (OR =1.46, 95% CI 1.21 to 1.77, P<0.001), and infections (OR =1.51, 95% CI 1.28 to 1.78, P<0.001). Conversely, HypoPT has no effect on mortality risk (OR =1.19, 95% CI 0.96 to 1.49, P=0.12).

Postsurgical HypoPT patients are vulnerable to a variety of medical and psychiatric diseases. This meta-analysis should guide surgeons in preoperative counseling and postoperative care for patients undergoing anterior neck surgeries.
