İyilik ve kötülük
Yaşlı Kızılderili reis kulübesinin önünde torunuyla oturmuş, az ötede birbiriyle boğuşup duran iki köpeği izliyorlardı. Köpeklerden biri beyaz diğeri siyahtı ve on iki yaşındaki çocuk kendini bildi bileli o köpekler dedesinin kulübesi önünde duruyorlardı. Dedesinin sürekli göz önünde tuttuğu iki iri köpekti bunlar. Çocuk, kulübeyi korumak için biri yeterli gözükürken niye ötekinin de olduğunu, hem niye renklerinin siyah ve beyaz olduğunu anlamak istiyordu. Merakla sordu dedesine;
-dede bu iki köpeği niye hep kulübenin önünde tutuyorsun? Hem de niye biri siyah diğeri beyaz?
Yaşlı reis, bilgece gülümsedi ve torununun sırtını sıvazladı ve:
-onlar benim için iki simgedir.
Çocuk:
-Neyin simgesi?
-İyilik ile kötülüğün simgesi. aynen gördüğün şu iki köpek gibi, iyilik ve kötülük durmadan içimizde mücadele eder. Onları seyrettikçe ben hep bunları düşünürüm.
Çocuk, sözün burasında, mücadele varsa, kazananı da olmalı diye düşündü ve her çocuğa has bitmeyen sorulara bir yenisini ekledi:
-Peki, hangisi kazanır bu mücadeleyi?
Bilge reis, derin bir gülümsemeyle baktı torununa:
-Ben hangisini beslersem o kazanır.
