Tissue culture and histopathology are the conventional diagnostic modalities for skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs), but few studies have investigated their concordance.

Determine concordance between histopathology and tissue culture in the diagnosis of suspected SSTIs.

Single-center retrospective study of 355 cases with suspected SSTIs identified from the dermatology inpatient consultation log January 2014-July 2017.

Overall concordance between histopathology testing and tissue culture results was high (76.1%). Concordance was high for cases defined as no evidence of infection, fungal infection and mycobacterial infection by histopathology (77.8%, 74.2%, and 80.0%) and tissue culture (92.1%, 67.7%, and 83.3%). Concordance was lower for suspected SSTIs with bacterial infection by histopathology (61.9%) and tissue culture (28.4%). Concordance rates were not significantly affected by age, sex, race, antimicrobial agent use, immunologic status, or biopsy size.

Vulvar CD is a rare phenomenon characterized by granulomatous genital inflammation that occurs independently from fistulizing CD. Left untreated, vulvar CD can result in debilitating lymphedema, disfiguring anatomic changes, secondary abscesses, cellulitis, and squamous cell carcinoma. We present a series of cases to highlight the clinical presentation of vulvar CD, the diagnostic testing required to distinguish complicating conditions, the asynchronous courses of skin and intestinal disease, and the complexities in the management of this disease and associated conditions. We review our multidisciplinary approach to care, aimed at reducing morbidity and improving patient quality of life.
Prurigo of pregnancy (PP), a specific pregnancy dermatosis, has been associated with atopic background in the patient and/or the patient's family. However, this association was not validated in some studies, and cases without atopic background have been reported.

This study aimed to evaluate the clinical features of PP not related to atopic background and search for comorbid conditions in medical and obstetric records.

In this case series, patients with typical PP presentation (i.e., pruritic, discrete papulonodules on the extensor surfaces of the extremities) diagnosed at the dermatology clinics of tertiary referral hospitals were evaluated. The exclusion criteria included missing historical data, inadequate follow-up, laboratory test results suggestive of other pruritic conditions, history of atopic disease, and family history of atopy. In the chronically inflamed state of atopic dermatitis, sensitization to proteins, such as food, also carries a risk for systemic contact dermatitis via ingestion of the allergen. Minimizing the development of irritant dermatitis is key to preventing sensitization. However, in patients with already chronically inflamed skin, reducing the use of products to the involved areas, recommending hypoallergenic products with caution, and taking measures to prevent biofilm formation are also integral to preventing sensitization to chemicals and proteins, such as food and commensal organisms.Dry, cracked lips are a common occurrence in both cold winter months and arid climates, leading many patients to experience discomfort year-round. Lip-licking is a compensatory measure that perpetuates the condition and often leads to lip-licking dermatitis. mTOR signaling pathway In patients in whom this compensatory measure becomes a chronic habit, other sequelae such as irritant contact dermatitis, cheilitis simplex, angular cheilitis, factitial cheilitis, secondary infections, and exfoliative cheilitis can arise. Given the high prevalence of lip-licking and subsequent dermatitis, it is important to counsel patients on interventions to prevent associated dermatitis and treatment methods to alleviate symptoms. Practical interventions in a daily routine should include application of a bland lip balm with ultraviolet protection, adequate hydration, protection of the lips from harsh weather conditions, and recognizing when dermatitis is present and further dermatologic care is indicated.
