Types of Keys Cut For Cars
Getting a new car key isn't expensive. From a locksmith to the dealership, spare keys can cost hundreds of dollars, especially those that include transponders or smart key fobs.
The key cutting process is more than just shaping a piece of metal However. To cut various types of keys, special tools and techniques are required.
Traditional Keys
Traditional keys for cars are cut with a mechanical key-cutting machine. The key's edges are made to align with the pin pattern in the lock, allowing the key to open the lock. These keys are used in older cars without security encryption. The traditional car key is cheaper to produce than other types of keys and can be bought at any hardware store or locksmith.
To get a new car key first, you need to determine the kind of key you require. If you have a traditional metal key that doesn't need chip it's as easy as obtaining an associate copy of your original key at your local AutoZone. This can be done by selecting the appropriate key blank for your car's year, make and model, and using an instrument to trace the original key's shape on the blank. This process will take only a few moments and is the cheapest method to get a replacement car key.
Another option is to have a locksmith cut your new key. This is a little more expensive, but it provides more security. Instead of cutting along the key's edge the laser is used to mill the key along its edge or down its center. This makes the key stronger and more substantial, and it is harder for thieves to pick. You may not be able drive your vehicle when you have laser-cut keys because it does not unlock the engine.
Keys for the latest models of cars include a chip or transponder. They require a specific tool to program them and the car won't start if the incorrect signal is received. Smart keys are a different option. They function more like remote controls, and can unlock and start the car with just a touch of a button. These keys must be programmed to match the car, but are much more convenient than having an ordinary key. However, if you have a smart key and it is lost or stolen, you will need to contact your car's manufacturer.
Transponder Keys
A transponder keys is more sophisticated than a standard flat metal key. The head of the plastic transponder key contains a microchip in it which transmits an identification code to the car whenever it is used to unlock and start the vehicle. The car won't start in the event that the chip is damaged or gone. It is therefore very important that you do not lose your transponder and store it in a safe place.
Transponder keys feature a larger and different plastic head. The head also comes with an antenna ring which is used to transmit this ID code to the car's computer. If the car is able to identify the ID code as a valid key, then it will disable the immobilizer and allow the engine to run.
This is a relatively new kind of anti-theft technology that has proven effective in its efforts to prevent thefts. Certain older vehicles do not feature this technology. The majority of vehicles that are available today have this technology.
You should contact an auto locksmith when you need to duplicate a transponder. They have specific equipment that enables them to duplicate an existing key and program it to work with the computer in your car. Certain car brands are able to do this themselves by following the directions in their owner's manual, but you should always consult an expert if not comfortable doing it yourself.
Certain car keys are more straightforward than others to duplicate. Non-transponder keys are still easy to duplicate and can be copied by just about anyone with just a few tools. Transponder keys require a special device to copy. If you lose yours then you'll need to visit a locksmith, such as Beishir Lock and Security who is equipped with this equipment. In the majority of instances, the locksmith will be able to create a new key and programmed to work with your vehicle's immobilizer system at less than the cost of going to the dealership.
Laser Keys
Many newer vehicles come with a key which is thicker than the bladed keys. These keys are harder to duplicate, particularly if they don't contain any transponder chip. This makes it harder for thieves to get an extra key, and makes your vehicle safer, since it's difficult for them to start the car using a physical key.
The keys are cut using high-security equipment by locksmiths that are who is certified in the field. These keys are also known as laser cut keys, sidewinder keys, or flip keys. They are a great choice for increasing your car's security. They can be found in most locksmith shops for automotive However, be sure that they are equipped with the appropriate equipment as these types of keys use distinct lock cylinders and require a special type of machine to cut them.
The cuts are not as deep on these keys, in contrast to the old-style bladed keys. Instead the cuts are made using milling machines that remove the metal with a precise and calibrated depth. A key code will be used by the locksmith to determine the settings of the machine that will create the duplicate. If the machine is not set up correctly it could damage the key cutting machine or even harm the cylinders of your lock.
These keys are also difficult to make because they have a pattern that is different. This makes them incapable of working with multiple cars with the exact same lock combination. This is similar to how keys with a transponder inside need to be programmed by the dealer to function on your vehicle.
The majority times, these keys are a one-piece unit with a key fob attached to them. They must be programmed by the dealership and generally cost more than the standard key that just needs a blank key or an edge-cut key cut. The dealership is likely to be able program your key in the event that you bring it along with you. A reputable auto locksmith could also do this, but the price will be higher.
Smart Keys
A smart key is the most advanced and expensive kind of car key. They're basically remotes that have sensors in and communicate with your car through radio waves. They can lock your car and open it without the need for a physical key. They can also start your vehicle. Some smart keys have an integrated screen that lets you perform a variety of functions from the key fob including navigation and music playback.
These smart keys use anti-theft technologies to prevent theft. The smart keys transmit a rolling-code that the car's computer scans and confirms prior to the engine's start. If a thief attempts to unlock the doors or start the engine using an unauthorised key, the car will trigger alarm and shut down the engine. This feature protects the investment you've made in your car and also gives you peace of mind when you're away.
