Replacing uPVC Window Handles
Switching the handles of windows made of upvc is an easy task. It is important to ensure that the replacement handle fits the spindle that was cut out of the window mechanism.
If the steps below are followed If you follow the steps correctly, any cockspur handle can fit in most windows. The step height of the handle is key.
What to look for
Many of the windows in the UK are fitted with uPVC handles, and over time they may begin to show signs of wear and tear. The handle on the window may become shaky or difficult to operate when this happens. Anyone who is comfortable with basic hand tools can complete this relatively simple task.
The first step is to make sure that the handle is securely attached to the frame of the window and in the open position. The next step is to find the fixing screws or pins that hold the handle in position. They are usually on the inside of the handle. They can be removed using a screwdriver or pliers.
When the handle is loose it can be taken from its hinges by gently pulling off. It is then time to find a new handle of the same style and size. This can be done in the DIY store or on the internet. The procedure should take just five minutes, and you will need a screwdriver.
When replacing the handle of a uPVC handle It is crucial to consider the step height. This is the distance between the handle's base and the place it is placed in the frame of the window. It is generally a standard measurement, and it is essential that you examine the step height of your existing handle prior to ordering the new one.
There are several sizes depending on the kind of handle. Inline handles are offered for uPVC windows that have lug centres of 31mm while cockspur handles have centers of lugs of 43mm. Tilt-and turn handles are typically found on uPVC windows. They feature a unique design that allows the window to be slid down to let in air, and then turned to fully open the window.
The most common uPVC handle breakage is internal cracking, rather than a fracture from the base. This could make it difficult to open. It is crucial to ensure that any replacement handle has the same spindle as the original one.
Remove the Old Handle
Incorrectly fitted or damaged window handles may cause your double glazed windows to close or open incorrectly, and can cause them to become stuck. There are many reasons for this like general wear and tear or the corrosion of the handle made of metal. In these cases it is essential to replace the window handle as soon as you can to prevent further damage or loss of functionality.
One of the first things to do when replacing upvc window handles is to remove the old handle from the window. To do this, start by taking off the screw that is covered when the handle is in the closed position. This will reveal a screw, and once it is removed, you can then begin to remove the handle itself. You can make the job easier by using an electronic screwdriver.
It is also worth noting that the handles' screws could be hidden behind plastic caps, so it is recommended to take a Stanley knife to the screw caps and then take them off. After you have removed the old handle, you'll have to examine the square cutout on the base to ensure that the new handle you choose for the window lock is compatible. This is important because you will need to measure the length of the spindle on the old handle to ensure that it is in line with the size of the window mechanism and the handle spindle that has been cut out.
The various types of window handles made of upvc are: Espag handles, which have a central screw and can turn left or right; Cranked handles with two screws, and are used on tilt and turn windows made of upvc as well as Spade handles, that have an arm with a flat surface and can be put on either side of the window. Once you have found a suitable replacement, it's just a matter of screwing the handle into place and ensuring that the spindle is inserted into the lock mechanism. After patio glass door replacement handles and locks , you can you can tighten the handle onto the window frame. The new upvc handles should now be secured.
Take a measurement of the Spindle
If you have to replace a upvc handle that has fallen, it's likely that the spindle that holds it in place is damaged or loose. In some instances, it can be fixed by using a screw or pin to secure it. In other situations, it will have to be replaced completely. There are several different types of upvc handles. They include espagnolette handles that are inline or cockspur handles. They also have tilt and turn handles. Each kind has a distinct method of installing and replacing the handle.
Before buying a replacement handle it is important to know the dimensions of the handle that is currently in use. This will ensure that the handle will fit the window properly and will be of the correct size. All handles are measured according to industry standards, so it is easy to identify the correct size.
To determine the size of the handle you must turn the window to the open position. You should then be able see the size of the screw or pin that secures it. Then you can use the ruler or tape measure to determine the length of the spindle. Once you know the length of the spindle, you can purchase a new one with the same length.
When you are looking to replace a handle you should be aware of the step height of an upvc window handle. The step height is measured from the base to the point at which the handle is placed on the frame. This usually is around 21mm or 9mm in aluminum and uPVC. Dropping something in the gap will let you see how far the handle extends before it reaches an obstruction.
Cockspur handles can have different backsets, based on the type of window you put them in. Inline Espag handles come with the standard height of 43mm centre to centre (2 fixing points). Cockspur handles however they have different backsets depending on the design of the window they are in. This is due to the fact that they have spurs that extend from the handle and locks over a cockspur wedge striker.
Install the new handle
If you've decided to replace the handle, make sure you align it with the screw holes on the door and secure it with the screws supplied. If you're also replacing the latch lever it can be put in the same way as the door handle. Then, you can reattach the door trim in order to conceal the mounting screws and close the project.
Tips: To remove the metal head from a wooden wedge place the handle on the floor so that its wide end is level with the ground. Then use to tap the narrow end. Be careful not to damage the handle or the spindle.
