Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is an international public health emergency with major disruptions and devastating health consequences resulting from the associated cytokine storm syndrome. The aim of our research was to assess the inflammatory biomarkers and risk factors associated with severity of (COVID-19) patients.
A cross-sectional study was conducted and included 150 Egyptian patients with COVID-19. Patients were classified into mild, moderate, and severe according to the clinical and CT chest findings. Blood samples were collected from patients for laboratory assessment of inflammatory biomarkers.
Our results showed significant negative correlation between oxygen saturation percent and serum levels of inflammatory markers. The correlations were statistically significant with IL-6, CRP, ferritin, LDH, and D-dimer which can be used as sensitive biomarkers for assessment of the risk of severity of infection in COVID 19 patients.
The study revealed that the risk factors associated with severity of COVID 19 infection included older age, male gender, presence of underlying chronic disease, and increased levels of inflammatory biomarkers CRP, LDH, ferritin, IL-6, and D-dimer.

Fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) can lead to severe, life-threatening fetal anemia depending on the amount of blood loss. FMH may be underdiagnosed as it is not routinely tested. In our report, we present a rare case of obvious mixed-field agglutination of maternal ABO forward typing caused by massive fetomaternal hemorrhage.
We retrospectively evaluated the clinical information of a 42-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted to our hospital at gestational week (GW) 36_5/7 due to fetal distress. She later delivered a male infant with severe anemia by cesarean section.
This case had an unusual maternal hemoglobin elevation before delivery and the maternal blood type identification showed ABO discrepancy. After other causes were excluded, FMH was suspected. The Kleihauer-Betke (K-B) test was done on the mother's blood, indicating a massive FMH.

To evaluate the value of preablative stimulated thyroglobulin (ps-Tg) before the first radioactive ablation iodine (RAI) treatment to predict the postoperative metastasis of DTC.
A total of 235 DTC patients, who underwent total thyroidectomy and neck lymph node dissection, were enrolled. On the basis of the presence or absence of metastasis, all patients were divided into metastasis (M1) and non-metastasis (M0) groups. Besides, the patients in the M1 group were further divided into two subgroups according to sites of metastasis. These groups included cervical lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis groups. Subsequently, the level of serum ps-Tg was measured 3 - 4 days before the first RAI ablation treatment, whereas 131I whole-body imaging and SPECT/CT tomography were performed 5 - 7 days after radio ablation. Subsequently, the Mann Whitney U test was used to compare the different levels of ps-Tg between the two groups. Additionally, the relationship between ps-Tg and the metastasis of DTC was analyzrst RAI ablation treatment is an independent risk factor and a meaningful indicator in predicting postoperative distant metastasis.
Rapid and accurate diagnosis of influenza virus (Flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is important for managing both the patient and laboratory. We compared the cobas Influenza A/B & RSV assay (cobas Liat) with the Simplexa Flu A/B & RSV assay (Simplexa) to evaluate which test method is more advantageous considering the resources of the laboratory and results of test performance.
A total of 236 respiratory specimens from patients referred for respiratory virus testing were retrospectively evaluated; 53 specimens tested positive for each of Flu A, Flu B, and RSV, and 77 specimens tested negative based on the results of the reference method, i.e., the Seegene Allplex Respiratory Panel 1/2/3 (Seegene, Seoul, Korea). The turnaround time (TAT) was 20 minutes per specimen for cobas Liat and 78 minutes per eight speci-mens for Simplexa. The total hands-on time was around one minute per specimen for both tests. The specimen volume required for testing was 200 µL for cobas Liat and 50 µL for Simplexaurate performance with a rapid TAT and a good workflow efficiency. Cobas Liat is more efficient than Simplexa as a point-of-care test for the detection of RSV.
Escherichia coli (E. coli) causes serious health problems due to the high rate of its resistance to common antibiotics. AmpC β-lactamases are important cephalosporinases, encoded by E. coli chromosome, that cause resistance to cefoxitin, cephalothin, most penicillins, cefazolin, and beta-lactamase inhibitor-beta-lactams. This study aimed to detect AmpC β-lactamases among E. coli strains at three educational hospitals in Iran.
Two hundred and thirty samples were recovered from the three educational hospitals in Zahedan City in southeast Iran. selleck chemicals Sixty E. coli strains were identified by biochemical and differential tests. E. coli strains with extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) were selected by disk-diffusion agar method and combined diffuse disc test. Finally, selected isolates were screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the common AmpC genotypes MOX, FOX, CIT, DHA, EBC, and ACC.
Out of 60 E. coli strains, 13 isolates (21.7%) were ESBL positive and 7 strains (11.6%) were phenotypically AmpC beta-lactamase producers. Three isolates had CIT (23.1%), 5 had DHA (38.5%), 4 had EBC (30.8%), and 1 had ACC (7.7%) genotypes.
The high prevalence of AmpC-producing E. coli strains in hospital settings is an important challenge for health care systems. Data about beta-lactamase producers that are crucial for controlling bacterial resistance should be upgraded.
