Among others, tissue heterogeneity is a major contributor to measurement error. The effect of tissue heterogeneity on measurement accuracy can be decreased by quantifying the probe sensing depth. To this end, this work (1) investigates the sensing depth of the 2.2 mm-diameter open-ended coaxial probe for skin mimicking material and (2) offers a simple experimental setup and protocol for sensing depth characterization of open-ended coaxial probes. The sensing depth characterized through simulation and experiments using two double-layered configurations composed to mimic the skin tissue heterogeneity. Three thresholds in percent increase of dielectric property measurements were chosen to determine the sensing depth. Based on the experiment results, it was concluded that the sensing depth was effected by the dielectric property contrast between the layers. That is, high contrast results in rapid change whereas low contrast results in a slower change in measured dielectric properties. It was also concluded that the sensing depth was independent of frequency between 0.5 to 6 GHz and was mostly determined by the material located immediately at the aperture of the probe.Cleft lip and palate are amongst the most common congenital malformations worldwide presenting with variable manifestations. Previous research has been primarily focused on the genetical aspects of its complex and multifactorial etiology. In the present study, we investigated the role of cytokines as mediators of epithelial-mesenchymal crosstalk and local site inflammation in cleft affected infants. Lip material was obtained from 12 children aged before primary dentition who suffered from orofacial clefting. The quantification of 12 cytokines (Interleukin-2,4,5,6,10,12,13,17A, Tumor Necrosis Factor-α, Interferon-γ, Transforming Growth Factor beta-1 and Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor) was done using ELISA. Nonparametric Spearman Rho was used to ascertain the correlation between the expression levels of different cytokines. A significantly strong positive correlation was found between IL-2 and IFN-γ coupled with an IL4/IFN-γ ratio favoring IFN-γ. These findings indicate a shift towards the preferential activation of the Th1 differentiation pathway. Further, a pathological reduction in TGFβ-1 levels was noted, which may contribute to mucosal damage. IL-6 was more highly correlated to IFN-γ and IL-12 indicating its potential proinflammatory role in cleft affected tissues. This preferential activation of Th1 cell differentiation and consistent expression of IL-2,6,13 and TNF-α in cleft patients may indicate certain underlying mechanisms for inflammation mediation at the site of clefting.TiB crystal whiskers (TiBw) can be synthesized in situ in Ti alloy matrix through powder metallurgy for the preparation of a new type of ceramic fiber-reinforced Ti matrix composite (TMC) TiBw/Ti-6Al-4V. In the TiBw/Ti-6Al-4V TMC, the reinforced phase/matrix interface is clean and has superior comprehensive mechanical properties, but its machinability is degraded. Hence, the bonding of reliable materials is important. To further optimize the TiBw/Ti-6Al-4V brazing technology and determine the relationship between the microstructure and tensile property of the brazed joint, results demonstrate that the elements of brazing filler metal are under sufficient and uniform diffusion, the microstructure is the typical Widmanstätten structure, and fine granular compounds in β phase are observed. The average tensile strength of the brazing specimen is 998 MPa under room temperature, which is 97.3% of that of the base metal. During the high-temperature (400 °C) tensile process, a fracture occurred at the base metal of the highest tensile test specimen with strength reaching 689 MPa, and the tensile fracture involved a combination of intergranular and transgranular modes at both room temperature and 400 °C. The fracture surface has dimples, secondary cracks are generated by the fracture of TiB whiskers, and large holes form when whole TiB whiskers are removed. CAD patients may experience different phenomena (inflammation, fibrosis, increase in adipose depots) leading to rises or drops in epicardial adipose tissue density, resulting in variations that are difficult to detect.
