Chinese, Japanese, and American preschoolers' (N = 150) displays of emotion to an undesired gift were coded across both social and nonsocial contexts in a "disappointing gift" paradigm. Generalized estimating equations revealed that, regardless of culture, when children received a disappointing gift, they showed more positive expressions of emotion ("fake smile") in social contexts (in the presence of unfamiliar and familiar examiners) relative to when they were alone, suggesting that preschool-aged children are able to mask their disappointment with positive displays. However, children's emotion expressions varied across both cultures and contexts. American children were more positively and negatively expressive than Japanese children and were more negatively expressive than Chinese children. Chinese and Japanese preschoolers verbally reported more negative emotions but showed more neutral expressions than American preschoolers when receiving the disappointing gift. In addition, across different contexts of the task, there were subtle differences in how Chinese and Japanese children regulated their emotional expressions, with Chinese children showing similar levels of neutral expressions (e.g., "poker face") across different contexts in the task. Thus, our findings highlight the importance of understanding cultural meanings and practices underlying emotion development during early childhood.The aim of the present study was to determine the optimum pH, time, temperature, variety and concentration of the added fatty acid and the initial count of added Lactobacillus plantarum AB20-961 and Lactobacillus plantarum DSM2601 for high conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) production in ground beef. The highest CLA production with using safflower fatty acids by L. plantarum AB20-961 and L. plantarum DSM2601 was 7.91 and 38.31 mg CLA/g fat, respectively (P  less then  0.05). Optimum conditions for both strains were 37 °C fermentation temperature, 5% added fatty acid in free form and 8 log CFU/g initial count. Additionally, the optimum pH and fermentation time were 7.94 pH and 78.78 h for L. plantarum AB20-961 and 7.68 and 72.57 h for L. plantarum DSM2601. The results indicated that both L. plantarum strains with optimum conditions determined in the present study may be applied in order to enrich CLA content in ground beef and satisfy consumer demands for the fermented meat products with functional components.
In the development of liver fibrosis, activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) contribute to the synthesis and deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. HSC activation is considered as a central driver of liver fibrosis. Recently, microRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported to act as key regulators in HSC activation.

Pinostilbene hydrate (PSH), a methylated derivative of resveratrol, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-tumour activities. However, the effects of PSH on HSC activation remain unclear.

The effects of PSH on HSC activation were examined. Moreover, the roles of WNT inhibitory factor 1 (WIF1) and miR-17-5p in the effects of PSH on HSC activation were examined.

PSH induced a significant reduction in HSC proliferation. PSH also effectively inhibited HSC activation, with reduced α-SMA and collagen expression. Notably, it was found that Wnt/β-catenin signalling was involved in the effects of PSH on HSC activation. PSH resulted in Wnt/β-catenin signalling inactivation, with a reduction in TCF activity as well as β-catenin nuclear translocation. Further studies showed that PSH inhibited Wnt/β-catenin signalling via regulation of WIF1 and miR-17-5p. Reduced HSC activation caused by PSH could be restored by loss of WIF1 or miR-17-5p mimics. Luciferase reporter assays further confirmed that WIF1 was a target of miR-17-5p.

Adolescent males were consistently reported to have a higher prevalence of Internet gaming disorder (IGD) than females. The mechanisms underlying the sex difference were potentially important for designing sex-specific interventions but were under-researched. Maladaptive cognitions were potential mediators between sex and adolescent IGD, as they were positively associated with both sex and adolescent IGD.

A total of 3,075 students participated in a cross-sectional survey that was conducted in Guangzhou and Chengdu, China. IGD was measured by using the DSM-5 checklist and maladaptive cognitions were measured by the validated Chinese version of Revised Internet Gaming Cognition Scale (C-RIGCS). selleck chemicals Structural equation modeling was used to test the mediation hypotheses.

Adolescent males showed a significantly higher prevalence of IGD than females (19.2% versus 7.8%, p<.05). Significant positive associations were found between sex and both maladaptive cognitions and IGD. The sex difference in IGD prevalence was partially mediated by the overall scale of C-RIGCS and its three subscales (i.e., perceived overvaluation of rewards of Internet gaming, perceived urges for playing Internet games, and perceived unwillingness to stop playing without completion of gaming tasks), with large mediation effect sizes ranging from 35.0% to 60.0% (Sobel test, p<,01).

The higher levels of maladaptive cognitions among adolescent males explained a relatively large part of the substantially higher prevalence of IGD among adolescent males than females. Interventions targeting adolescent males may consider modifying such cognitions to reduce their IGD.
