The performance of many Path of Exile items can be enhanced by upgrading the performance of them. They can be a fantastic source of damage or more AD or even more attachments.

Rare-grade equipment is often superior to modernized Common or Magic equipment due to their high demands.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a type of upgrade that can be applied to armor and weapon items. They improve the stats of whatever item they are connected to. Upgrades to armor are available in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. Alternately, they can be salvaged from items with upgrade components inside them, with a professional or higher salvage kit.

The amount of damage that an armored item or weapon can absorb depends on the level of its upgrades. The ability to absorb damage of a piece armor will increase when it's upgraded to the highest upgrade level. It's important to remember that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it should be heavier.

There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades available in the game and they all have distinct effects. For instance, some upgrades give the armor a certain amount of additional health points, while others make it lighter and stronger. The name of the upgrade will indicate the type of upgrade that an item will receive, as shown below.


Some upgrades also feature magic or a hybrid of magic and technology, which is shown by the "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges to use. They are referred to as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges associated with these upgrades change daily or never expire depending on the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest way to upgrade your armor. You can find it by exploring and looting small chests. Titanium is more expensive, but is readily available at the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. The process of upgrading an armor piece to max upgrade level will significantly boost its defense however, the user must be aware that putting more weight on it will drastically reduce its speed and agility. It is not recommended to upgrade armor above +9. The boost in defense generally isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.

Jewels

Jewels are used in the armor's sockets and weapons, increasing a stat and providing secondary effects. They can be created through a process called jewelry crafting, where you combine a gem with various ingredients at a table for jewelry. The higher the grade of the jewel, the better its secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained around the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and, sometimes, by salvaging Legendary equipment. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The quality of a jewel can be improved by the Jeweler, in stages that range from Crude to Royal. The boosts to stats will differ depending on the tier the jewel is at when it's inserted into jewelry, weapons or gear.

The Jeweler is able to create all tiers of gems, apart from the rare and legendary ones which you must attain an appropriate level to obtain. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped out by a different identical jewel without destroying the original one. However, you can only replace the jewels in an equipment piece once.

The use of more jewels in a move can make it feel more comfortable, and is often done for aesthetic reasons. Jewels also enhance performance and make a harder surface than steel so that repeated friction caused by pivots does not damage them.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs that can enhance the appearance of your shields and weapons. These glyphs offer a small boost and can be swapped, but they are not guaranteed to show up as loot. Glyphs, like jewelry, can be upgraded by the Jeweler to exchange Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs can also be taken out and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like aegis and traits, aren't swappable and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to provide your hero with many small, but useful benefits. They are available in the start-up area as loot or as personal story rewards. They can also be obtained through vendors and after completing road interaction. They may also be crafted by jewelers, and then found or purchased at the Trading Post.

The first trinket that a player can unlock is the cloak. It gives a small but valuable boost in movement speed and the ability to evade. After that, they can get amulets, rings, and necklaces in the same fashion to how the player obtains armor and weapons. Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal or jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be used on any equipment. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced, and can only be used with certain trinkets.

These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't engaged in combat. This lets the hero perform better when they are not active and may also help to compensate for the absence of a strong team or the absence of any slots from the talent tree which would normally be filled with hero's ideal statistics.

A good guideline for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you aren't planning to replace soon, followed by items with desirable stats but less important than the iLevel of the item to be upgraded. This is particularly true if an item has multiple stats you wish to upgrade, since it's generally more beneficial to upgrade one crucial stat than two subpar ones.

Jungle players will often upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red one at the beginning of the game. Mid and top players on the other hand, will choose a green or a pink ward, based on the matchup. These choices will have a major impact on the hero's abilities to control maps.

In addition to the items mentioned above, players will also find other trinkets that form of rewards and trophies throughout the game. They can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story, such as completing a chapter's main quest or destroying a boss.
