Our findings suggest that wild jack deserves to be promoted as a minor fruit species of high nutritional importance and must be considered as a potential fruit crop species for further research. The stomach is among the organs grossly affected organ by diabetic complications. The present study was aimed at investigating the protective role of zinc on stomach of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes mellitus. Female Swiss albino rats were divided in four experimental groups Group I, control; group II, control + zinc sulfate; group III, STZ-induced diabetic animals; and group IV, STZ-diabetic + zinc sulfate. Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of STZ, at a dose of 65 mg/kg body weight. Zinc sulfate (100 mg/kg body weight) was given daily by gavage for 60 days to groups II and IV. At the end of the experiment, the rats were sacrificed, and the tissues were taken. In the diabetic group, hexose, hexosamine, fucose, and sialic acid levels, as well as tissue factor, adenosine deaminase, carbonic anhydrase, xanthine oxidase, lactate dehydrogenase, prolidase activities, advanced oxidized protein products, homocysteine, and TNF-α levels were increased in the stomach tissue homogenates. Whereas, catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, paraoxonase, and aryl esterase activities were decreased in the diabetic group. The administration of zinc reversed all the deformities. These findings suggest that zinc has protective role in ameliorating several mechanisms of STZ-induced diabetic stomach injury.Ochratoxin A (OTA) and citrinin (CIT) are nephrotoxic mycotoxins, found in various foodstuffs and in animal feed, and may cause adverse effects on animal and human health. Previous biomonitoring data indicate a frequent co-exposure of Bangladeshi adults to these mycotoxins. However, since such data are not yet available for young children, a vulnerable part of the population, we conducted this study to assess their exposure to OTA and CIT and compare it with that of adults in Bangladesh. In total, 154 urine samples were collected from infants and children in Rajshahi (n = 88) and Dhaka (n = 66) district of Bangladesh. OTA, CIT, and their metabolites were analyzed by a sensitive HPLC-FLD or LC-MS/MS method, respectively. Overall, OTA and CIT biomarkers were detectable in 72.7% and 54.9% of urines, respectively. The mean OTA and OTα levels in urines were higher in children (0.13 ng/mL and 0.28 ng/mL, respectively) than in infants (0.08 ng/mL and 0.05 ng/mL, respectively). Regarding region, the mean level of OTA was higher in samples from Rajshahi district (0.13 ng/mL) than from Dhaka district (0.09 ng/mL), while the mean OTα level was 2-fold higher in the Dhaka. The total CIT biomarker concentration was significantly higher in children (2.16 ng/mL) than in infant (0.70 ng/mL) urines (p less then 0.05), and the mean concentration of HO-CIT was about 6-fold higher than that of parent compound CIT. A provisional daily intake for CIT was calculated and exceeded a preliminary value set by EFSA (0.2 μg/kg bw) in 23.3% and 11.9% of children and infants, respectively. OTA and CIT biomarker concentrations in the young children cohorts are higher than those found in Bangladeshi adults in summer, but lower than in winter season. VT104 The new results indicate frequent co-exposure to nephrotoxic mycotoxins that varies between the cohorts and regions in Bangladesh.Laboratory studies have revealed that social factors are key in bird-song learning. Nevertheless, little is known about how or why birds choose the songs they do learn from the many they will hear under natural conditions. We focus on various theories concerning social song learning that have been offered to date, with special attention paid to two axes of social factors. First, does song learning occur via direct interaction of the young bird with song tutors, or via social eavesdropping by the young bird on interacting singers (social modeling of song)? Social modeling, a hypothesis first proposed by Pepperberg (Zeitschrift für Tierpsychologie, 55(2), 139-160, 1981), and direct interaction are not mutually exclusive hypotheses, and the evidence we review suggests both play a role in song learning. Second, does song learning occur via interactions with rivals (territorial competitors) or with friends (mutually tolerant or even cooperative territorial neighbors). These are largely mutually exclusive hypotheses, and can really only be tested in the field. There is little evidence on this contrast to date. We review our recent study on song sparrows, which indicates that both the young bird and his primary tutor may benefit from song learning/tutoring. If this mutual benefit result is confirmed by further studies, we believe that song "tutoring" in these cases may be more than a term of convenience that it may qualify as true teaching.A "STRANGE" framework has been proposed to mitigate the effects of sampling biases in animal experiments (Webster & Rutz, Nature, 582, 337-340, 2020). While sampling biases are likely a major cause of poor replicability and generalizability in animal behavior research, a more comprehensive and cautious approach is needed to effectively guide decision-making in animal research. The life expectancy of people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is rising due to better access to combination anti-retroviral therapy (ART). Although ART has reduced acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) related mortality and morbidity, there has been an increase in non-AIDS defining illnesses such as diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia and coronary artery disease (CAD). HIV is a disease marked by inflammation which has been associated with specific biological vascular processes increasing the risk of premature atherosclerosis. The combination of pre-existing risk factors, atherosclerosis, ART, opportunistic infections and coagulopathy contributes to rising CAD incidence. The prevalence of CAD has emerged as a major contributor of morbidity in these patients due to longer life expectancy. However, ART has been associated with lipodystrophy, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus and CAD. These adverse effects, along with drug-drug interactions when ART is combined with cardiovascular drugs, result in significant challenges in the care of this group of patients.
