The aim of this study was to establish a preoperative prediction method for sparsely granulated (SG) growth hormone (GH)-secreting pituitary adenoma, an aggressive tumour subtype with high recurrence risk, in acromegaly patients.

Eighty-three patients with GH-secreting pituitary adenomas were included in this study. GH measurements, cytokeratin immunostaining and electron microscopy were performed to detect granulation patterns. To characterise somatosensory discrimination impairment of the upper-limb across domains of tactile discrimination, limb position sense and haptic object recognition using the sense_assess© kids and examine associations with upper-limb motor performance in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP).

The sense_assess© kids was administered at one timepoint to 28 children, aged 6-15.5years (M=10.1, SD=2.4), with hemiplegic CP (right hemiplegia n=15) and Manual Ability Classification System Levels I (n=11) and II (n=17). Unimanual motor performance was quantified using the Box and Block Test.

Tactile discrimination was impaired in 18, limb position sense in 20, and haptic object recognition was impaired in 21 of 28 children. Over 80% (23/28) of children had impaired somatosensory discrimination in one or more domains. Low to moderate correlations were observed between each measure of somatosensory discrimination and motor performance. Manual ability classification was associated with limb position sense and haptic object recognition. A moderate inverse correlation (r=-.57, p<.01) exists between the number of somatosensory domains impaired and motor performance.

These experiments sought to establish the effects of physiological and pathophysiological concentrations of exogenous FA upon the function of tissue engineered skeletal muscle (TESkM). Cultured initially for 14 days, C2C12 TESkM was exposed to FA-free bovine serum albumin alone or conjugated to a FA mixture (oleic, palmitic, linoleic, and α-linoleic acids [OPLA] [ratio 4530241%]) at different concentrations (200 or 800 µM) for an additional 4 days. Subsequently, TESkM morphology, functional capacity, gene expression and insulin signaling were analyzed. There was a dose response increase in the number and size of lipid droplets within the TESkM (p  less then  .05). Exposure to exogenous FA increased the messenger RNA expression of genes involved in lipid storage (perilipin 2 [p  less then  .05]) and metabolism (pyruvate dehydrogenase lipoamide kinase isozyme 4 [p  less then  .01]) in a dose dependent manner. TESkM force production was reduced (tetanic and single twitch) (p less then .05) and increases in transcription of type I slow twitch fiber isoform, myosin heavy chain 7, were observed when cultured with 200 µM OPLA compared to control (p  less then  .01). Four days of OPLA exposure results in lipid accumulation in TESkM which in turn results in changes in muscle function and metabolism; thus, providing insight ito the functional and mechanistic changes of TESkM in response to exogenous FA.Microalgae have shown great potential as a source of biofuels, food, and other bioproducts. More recently, microfluidic devices have been employed in microalgae-related studies. However, at small fluid volumes, the options for controlling flow conditions are more limited and mixing becomes largely reliant on diffusion. In this study, we fabricated magnetic artificial cilia (MAC) and implemented them in millimeter scale culture wells and conducted growth experiments with Scenedesmus subspicatus while actuating the MAC in a rotating magnetic field to create flow and mixing. In addition, surface of MAC was made hydrophilic using plasma treatment and its effect on growth was compared with untreated, hydrophobic MAC. The experiments showed that the growth was enhanced by ten and two times with hydrophobic and hydrophilic MAC, respectively, compared with control groups which contain no MAC. This technique can be used to investigate mixing and flow in small sample volumes, and the enhancement in growth can be beneficial for the throughput of screening studies. Moreover, the methods used for creating and controlling MAC can be easily adopted in labs without microfabrication infrastructures, and they can be mastered by people with little prior experience in microfluidics.

A regional cohort of 102 (51 males, 51 females) children born very preterm (mean [SD] gestation at birth=28wks [2], range=23-31wks) was studied from birth to age 9years alongside a comparison group of 109 (58 males, 51 females) children born at term (mean [SD] gestation at birth=40wks [1], range=38-41wks). At age 9years, all children underwent a neurodevelopmental evaluation while parents were interviewed using the Development and Well-Being Assessment to diagnose a range of DSM-IV childhood psychiatric disorders. Detailed information was also available about the children's neonatal medical course and postnatal psychosocial environment, including maternal mental health and parenting.

At age 9 years, 21% (n=21) of very preterm and 13% (n=14) of term-born children met diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder.
