This study proposes a system for estimating individual emotions based on collected indoor environment data for human participants. At the first step, we develop wireless sensor nodes, which collect indoor environment data regarding human perception, for monitoring working environments. The developed system collects indoor environment data obtained from the developed sensor nodes and the emotions data obtained from pulse and skin temperatures as big data. Then, the proposed system estimates individual emotions from collected indoor environment data. This study also investigates whether sensory data are effective for estimating individual emotions. Indoor environmental data obtained by developed sensors and emotions data obtained from vital data were logged over a period of 60 days. Emotions were estimated from indoor environmental data by machine learning method. The experimental results show that the proposed system achieves about 80% or more estimation correspondence by using multiple types of sensors, thereby demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed system. Our obtained result that emotions can be determined with high accuracy from environmental data is a useful finding for future research approaches.A spectrophotometric approach for quantification of dissolved manganese (DMn) with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) has been adapted for in situ application in coastal and estuarine waters. The analyser uses a submersible microfluidic lab-on-chip device, with low power (~ 1.5 W) and reagent consumption (63 µL per sample). Laboratory characterization showed an absorption coefficient of 40,838 ± 1127 L⋅mol-1⋅cm-1 and a detection limit of 27 nM, determined for a 34.6 mm long optical detection cell. Laboratory tests showed that long-term stability of the PAN reagent was achieved by addition of 4% v/v of a non-ionic surfactant (Triton-X100). To suppress iron (Fe) interferences with the PAN reagent, the Fe(III) masking agents deferoxamine mesylate (DFO-B) or disodium 4,5-dihydroxy-1,3-benzenedisulfonate (Tiron) were added and their Fe masking efficiencies were investigated. The analyser was tested during a deployment over several weeks in Kiel Fjord (Germany), with successful acquisition of 215 in situ data points. The time series was in good agreement with DMn concentrations determined from discretely collected samples analysed via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), exhibiting a mean accuracy of 87% over the full deployment duration (with an accuracy of > 99% for certain periods) and clear correlations to key hydrographic parameters.The gingival seal around teeth prevents bacteria from destroying the tooth-supporting tissues and disseminating throughout the body. Porphyromonas gingivalis, a major periodontopathogen, degrades components of the specialized extracellular matrix that mediates attachment of the gingiva to the tooth. Of these, secretory calcium-binding phosphoprotein proline-glutamine rich 1 (SCPPPQ1) protein has a distinctive resistance to degradation, suggesting that it may offer resistance to bacterial attack. In silico analysis of its amino acid sequence was used to explore its molecular characteristics and to predict its two- and three-dimensional structure. TED-347 mouse SCPPPQ1 exhibits similarities with both proline-rich and cationic antimicrobial proteins, suggesting a putative antimicrobial potential. A combination of imaging approaches showed that incubation with 20 μM of purified SCPPPQ1 decrease bacterial number (p  less then  0.01). Fluorescence intensity decreased by 70% following a 2 h incubation of Porphyromonas gingivalis with the protein. Electron microscopy analyses revealed that SCPPPQ1 induced bacterial membrane disruption and breaches. While SCPPPQ1 has no effect on mammalian cells, our results suggest that it is bactericidal to Porphyromonas gingivalis, and that this protein, normally present in the gingival seal, may be exploited to maintain a healthy seal and prevent systemic dissemination of bacteria.Health system constraints hamper treatment of children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in Tanzania. This non-inferiority quasi-experimental study in Bariadi (intervention) and Maswa (control) districts assessed the effectiveness, coverage, and cost-effectiveness of SAM treatment by community health workers (CHWs) compared with outpatient therapeutic care (OTC). We included 154 and 210 children aged 6-59 months with SAM [mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC)  less then  11.5 cm] without medical complications in the control and intervention districts, respectively. The primary treatment outcome was cure (MUAC ≥ 12.5 cm). We performed costing analysis from the provider's perspective. The probability of cure was higher in the intervention group (90.5%) than in the control group (75.3%); risk ratio (RR) 1.17; 95% CI 1.05, 1.31 and risk difference (RD) 0.13; 95% CI 0.04, 0.23. SAM treatment coverage was higher in the intervention area (80.9%) than in the control area (41.7%). The cost per child treated was US$146.50 in the intervention group and US$161.62 in the control group and that per child cured was US$161.77 and US$215.49 in the intervention and control groups, respectively. The additional costs per an additional child treated and cured were US$134.40 and US$130.92, respectively. Compared with OTC, treatment of children with uncomplicated SAM by CHWs was effective, increased treatment coverage and was cost-effective.MicroRNA-125b, the first microRNA to be identified, is known to promote cardiomyocyte maturation from embryonic stem cells; however, its physiological role remains unclear. To investigate the role of miR-125b in cardiovascular biology, cardiac-specific miR-125b-1 knockout mice were generated. We found that cardiac-specific miR-125b-1 knockout mice displayed half the miR-125b expression of control mice resulting in a 60% perinatal death rate. However, the surviving mice developed hearts with cardiac hypertrophy. The cardiomyocytes in both neonatal and adult mice displayed abnormal mitochondrial morphology. In the deficient neonatal hearts, there was an increase in mitochondrial DNA, but total ATP production was reduced. In addition, both the respiratory complex proteins in mitochondria and mitochondrial transcription machinery were impaired. Mechanistically, using transcriptome and proteome analysis, we found that many proteins involved in fatty acid metabolism were significantly downregulated in miR-125b knockout mice which resulted in reduced fatty acid metabolism. Importantly, many of these proteins are expressed in the mitochondria. We conclude that miR-125b deficiency causes a high mortality rate in neonates and cardiac hypertrophy in adult mice. The dysregulation of fatty acid metabolism may be responsible for the cardiac defect in the miR-125b deficient mice.Texture features are designed to quantitatively evaluate patterns of spatial distribution of image pixels for purposes of image analysis and interpretation. Unexplained variations in the texture patterns often lead to misinterpretation and undesirable consequences in medical image analysis. In this paper we explore the ability of machine learning (ML) methods to design a radiology test of Osteoarthritis (OA) at early stage when the number of patients' cases is small. In our experiments we use high-resolution X-ray images of knees in patients which were identified with Kellgren-Lawrence scores progressing from 1. The existing ML methods have provided a limited diagnostic accuracy, whilst the proposed Group Method of Data Handling strategy of Deep Learning has significantly extended the diagnostic test. The comparative experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework using the Zernike-based texture features has significantly improved the diagnostic accuracy on average by 11%. This allows us to conclude that the designed model for early diagnostic of OA will provide more accurate radiology tests, although new study is required when a large number of patients' cases will be available.Insufficient sleep duration and physical activity (PA) are known risk factors for overweight and obesity in children; however, there are no studies on comprehensive associations of objectively-measured sleep parameters and PA with excess weight and excess adiposity in kindergarteners. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the associations between objectively measured sleep parameters and PA with excess weight and excess adiposity, defined as BMI ≥ 85th percentile and body fat percentage (BFP) ≥ 85th percentile, respectively. Sleep parameters and PA were measured in 676 subjects aged 5-6 years using accelerometers for 7 days, worn at the participant's hip. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to estimate BFP. In the total sample, lower sleep duration, sleep efficiency, vigorous PA and the number of steps per day were associated with excess weight. However, excess adiposity was associated with lower sleep duration, total PA, vigorous PA, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and the number of steps per day. Logistic regression by the stepwise progressive method showed that the strongest predictor of excess adiposity in boys and girls was vigorous PA, while the strongest predictor of excess weight in boys was sleep efficiency. A holistic approach to health targeting all of these factors synergistically is needed to optimize the effectiveness of obesity prevention and treatment interventions.Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and preeclampsia (PE) are both characterized by endothelial dysfunction and GDM women have higher incidence of PE. The placenta plays a key role in PE pathogenesis but its contribution to PE during GDM remains unclear. Herein, we compared placental and maternal blood anti-angiogenic soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt1) and pro-angiogenic Placental Growth Factor (PlGF) expressions in GDM and GDM-PE pregnancies compared to controls (CTRL) and PE cases. Electrochemiluminescence immunoassays showed a significantly higher maternal blood sFlt1/PlGF values in GDM-PE relative to CTRL and GDM pregnancies. We reported that placental PlGF gene expression was significantly decreased in GDM, PE and GDM-PE relative to CTRL. However, PlGF protein levels were significantly increased in GDM and GDM-PE relative to CTRL and PE placentae. Finally, sFlt1 gene expression was significantly increased in PE relative to CTRL, GDM and GDM-PE placentae. In contrast, sFlt1 protein expression was significantly decreased in GDM-PE relative to CTRL, GDM and PE placentae. Finally, higher sFlt1/PlGF ratio in GDM-PE maternal blood suggest that sFlt1 overproduction is related to PE onset also in GDM pregnancies even though characterized by a less severe endothelial dysfunction in terms of angiogenic biomarkers.Many studies speak in favor of a rhythmic mode of listening, by which the encoding of acoustic information is structured by rhythmic neural processes at the time scale of about 1 to 4 Hz. Indeed, psychophysical data suggest that humans sample acoustic information in extended soundscapes not uniformly, but weigh the evidence at different moments for their perceptual decision at the time scale of about 2 Hz. We here test the critical prediction that such rhythmic perceptual sampling is directly related to the state of ongoing brain activity prior to the stimulus. Human participants judged the direction of frequency sweeps in 1.2 s long soundscapes while their EEG was recorded. We computed the perceptual weights attributed to different epochs within these soundscapes contingent on the phase or power of pre-stimulus EEG activity. This revealed a direct link between 4 Hz EEG phase and power prior to the stimulus and the phase of the rhythmic component of these perceptual weights. Hence, the temporal pattern by which the acoustic information is sampled over time for behavior is directly related to pre-stimulus brain activity in the delta/theta band.
