We present SyNoRiM, a novel way to jointly register multiple non-rigid shapes by synchronizing the maps that relate learned functions defined on the point clouds. Even though the ability to process non-rigid shapes is critical in various applications ranging from computer animation to 3D digitization, the literature still lacks a robust and flexible framework to match and align a collection of real, noisy scans observed under occlusions. Given a set of such point clouds, our method first computes the pairwise correspondences parameterized via functional maps. We simultaneously learn potentially non-orthogonal basis functions to effectively regularize the deformations, while handling the occlusions in an elegant way. To maximally benefit from the multi-way information provided by the inferred pairwise deformation fields, we synchronize the pairwise functional maps into a cycle-consistent whole thanks to our novel and principled optimization formulation. We demonstrate via extensive experiments that our method achieves a state-of-the-art performance in registration accuracy, while being flexible and efficient as we handle both non-rigid and multi-body cases in a unified framework and avoid the costly optimization over point-wise permutations by the use of basis function maps.
Clostridioides difficile is the main cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea in Europe and North America. The aim of this study was to characterize the epidemiology and clinical burden of Clostridioides difficile infection among hospitalized patients in Portugal.

Retrospective study conducted in six public hospital centers in Portugal. All primary Clostridioides difficile infection episodes and related recurrences occurring in 2017, as well as episodes developing two to eight weeks after the last episode diagnosed in that year, were documented. The National Reference Laboratory (National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge) provided national surveillance data on Clostridioides difficile infection.

A total of 385 inpatients with at least one primary episode diagnosed in 2017 were included. Most patients were aged over 70 years-old (73.2%). The included patients developed 451 episodes during the observation period. Approximately 44% of primary episodes were community-associated. Most episodes (94.9%) ocrtionately high among the older population. Community-associated Clostridioides difficile infection is common among inpatients with this infection.Rationale Outdoor air pollution is a potential risk factor for lower lung function and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Little is known about how airway abnormalities and lung growth might modify this relationship. Objectives To evaluate the associations of ambient air pollution exposure with lung function and COPD and examine possible interactions with dysanapsis. Methods We made use of cross-sectional postbronchodilator spirometry data from 1,452 individuals enrolled in the CanCOLD (Canadian Cohort Obstructive Lung Disease) study with linked ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) air pollution estimates. Dysanapsis, or the ratio of the airway-to-lung volume calculated from thoracic computed tomography images, was used to examine possible interactions. Measurements and Main Results In adjusted models, 101.7 ml (95% confidence interval [CI], -166.2 to -37.2) and 115.0 ml (95% CI, -196.5 to -33.4) lower FEV1 were demonstrated per increase of 2.4 ug/m3 PM2.5 and 9.2 ppb NO2, respectively. Interaction between air pollution and dysanapsis was not statistically significant when modeling the airway-to-lung ratio as a continuous variable. However, a 109.8 ml (95% CI, -209.0 to -10.5] lower FEV1 and an 87% (95% CI, 12% to 213%) higher odds of COPD were observed among individuals in the lowest, relative to highest, airway-to-lung ratio, per 2.4 μg/m3 increment of PM2.5. Conclusions Ambient air pollution exposure was associated with lower lung function, even at relatively low concentrations. Individuals with dysanaptic lung growth might be particularly susceptible to inhaled ambient air pollutants, especially those at the extremes of dysanapsis.Undergraduate nursing students in developed countries are reported to have poor perceptions and low preference for gerontological nursing. However, perceptions and preferences of undergraduate nursing students toward gerontological nursing in low-income countries have not been well explored. This study explored the perceptions and preferences of undergraduate nurses in Ghana toward gerontological nursing. A mixed method study design was used to explore Ghanaian undergraduate nursing students' perceptions and preferences for caring for older people. One hundred and seventy-four nursing students were surveyed and 30 of them were interviewed. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively using SPSS version 27. Content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data to generate themes. Response rate in the study was 73%. The majority of participants (95.4%) were below the age of 29. Gerontological nursing was ranked as the least preferred nursing specialty among graduating undergraduate nurses. Poor perceptions and inadequate knowledge about the care of older people were largely responsible for the lack of preference for gerontological nursing. Improving undergraduate nursing students' knowledge about gerontological nursing is critical in correcting poor perceptions about gerontological nursing.Chronic alcohol drinking is associated with increased susceptibility to viral and bacterial respiratory pathogens. In this study, we use a rhesus macaque model of voluntary ethanol self-administration to study the effects of long-term alcohol drinking on the immunological landscape of the lung. We report a heightened inflammatory state in alveolar macrophages (AMs) obtained from ethanol (EtOH)-drinking animals that is accompanied by increased chromatin accessibility in intergenic regions that regulate inflammatory genes and contain binding motifs for transcription factors AP-1, IRF8, and NFKB p-65. In line with these transcriptional and epigenetic changes at the basal state, AMs from EtOH-drinking animals generate elevated inflammatory mediator responses to lipopolysaccharides and respiratory syncytial virus. NS105 However, the transcriptional analysis revealed an inefficient induction of interferon-stimulated genes with EtOH in response to the respiratory syncytial virus, suggesting disruption of antimicrobial defenses. Correspondingly, AMs from EtOH-drinking animals exhibited transcriptional shifts indicative of increased oxidative stress and oxidative phosphorylation, which was coupled with higher cytosolic reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial potential. This heightened oxidative stress state was accompanied by decreased ability to phagocytose bacteria. Bulk RNA and assay for transposase-accessible chromatin sequencing data further revealed reduced expression and chromatin accessibility of loci associated with tissue repair and maintenance with chronic EtOH drinking. Similarly, analysis of single-cell RNA sequencing data revealed shifts in cell states from tissue maintenance to inflammatory responses with EtOH. Collectively, these data provide novel insight into mechanisms by which chronic EtOH drinking increases susceptibility to infection in patients with alcohol use disorders. Objective To review the physical activity promotion efforts of Power 5 conference institutions' summer transition programs. Methods The websites of Power 5 Conference and affiliate member institutions (N = 78) were systematically reviewed and information on summer transition programs pertaining to health were extracted. Results Most (n = 45, 57.7%) institutions had a summer transition program of some kind. Among those who had summer transition programs, 14 (31.1%) had a nonphysical activity health course (i.e. health and/or nutrition), while courses that incorporated a physical activity component were uncommon (n = 6, 13.3%). Only two institutions covered physical activity, nutrition, and health in at least one offered course. Conclusions There is an opportunity for tertiary institution-level summer transitional programs to expand coverage to address a currently unmet need for physical activity promotion while avoiding perpetuation of existing inequities.Rationale Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), the first line therapy for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is considered effective in reducing daytime sleepiness. Its efficacy relies on adequate adherence, often defined as >4 hours per night. However, this binary threshold may limit our understanding of the causal effect of CPAP adherence and daytime sleepiness, and a multilevel approach for CPAP adherence can be more appropriate. Objectives In this study, we show how two causal inference methods can be applied on observational data for the estimation of the effect of different ranges of CPAP adherence on daytime sleepiness as measured by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Methods Data were collected from a large prospective observational French cohort for patients with OSA. Four groups of CPAP adherence were considered (0-4, 4-6, 6-7, and 7-10 h per night). Multivariable regression, inverse-probability-of-treatment weighting (IPTW), and inverse propensity weighting with regression adjustment (IPW-RA) were used to assess the impact of CPAP adherence level on daytime sleepiness. Results In this study, 9,244 patients with OSA treated by CPAP were included. The mean initial ESS score was 11 (±5.2), with a mean reduction of 4 points (±5.1). Overall, there was evidence of the causal effect of CPAP adherence on daytime sleepiness which was mainly observed between the lower CPAP adherence group (0-4 h) compared with the higher CPAP adherence group (7-10 h). There are no differences by considering higher level of CPAP adherence (>4 h). Conclusions We showed that IPTW and IPW-RA can be easily implemented to answer questions regarding causal effects using observational data when randomized trials cannot be conducted. Both methods give a direct causal interpretation at the population level and allow the assessment of the appropriate consideration of measured confounders.
Speculation about the effects of COVID-19, especially on youth social development, has been mixed. This study aimed to examine change in loneliness and belongingness into the first month of stay-at-home orders (January through April 2020).

College students (
 = 73,
 = 19.03 years,
 = 1.44 years) enrolled in a life-span development course.

Participants completed online surveys at the beginning and the end of the semester assessing change in well-being.

Results revealed that loneliness scores significantly decreased, and belongingness scores significantly increased from Time 1 to Time 2. Among those who experienced increased belongingness, loneliness significantly decreased while there was not a significant change in loneliness among those who decreased in belongingness.

These findings suggest that increasing belongingness should be a focus when trying to combat loneliness, especially in young adults experiencing a dramatic life event during a critical time for social development.
