We hereby discuss various fields of concern in resuming breast imaging services. We examine the concerns for resuming functions of breast imaging services in 2 broad categories, including safety aspects of operating a breast clinic and addressing potential modifications needed in managing common clinical scenarios in the COVID-19 aftermath. Using a stepwise approach in harmony with the relative states of the epidemic, health care system capacity, and the current state of performing breast surgeries (and in compliance with the recommended surgical guidelines) can ensure avoiding pointless procedures and ensure a smooth transition to a fully operational breast imaging facility.
The COVID-19 pandemic has placed a significant strain on healthcare resources and utilisation globally. The appearance of the disease in the Republic of Ireland resulted in a broad postponement of scheduled and routine surgical care. The influence of the novel coronavirus, and the associated imposition of public health measures such as school closures and social distancing, on the burden of emergency surgical disease is less clear.

The aim of this study was to examine the impact of COVID-19 on the number of patients presenting to our institution with emergent surgical illnesses or requiring emergency general surgical procedures.

All patients attending our service between March 1st 2020 and April 30th 2020 were identified retrospectively by examining electronic handover and electronic discharge summaries, and data were collected relating to demographics, presenting illness, critical care utilisation, length of stay, operative or endoscopic procedure performed, and in-hospital mortality. Similar data were collected March 1st to April 30th 2019, 2018, and 2017 respectively to allow direct comparison.

151 patients were admitted during the study period, compared to a total of 788 during the proceeding three years (mean 2.49 admissions per night versus 4.35 per night, 42.8% reduction, p<0.001). Median age of admitted patients was 51.8 years, compared to 50.3 years formerly (p=0.35). 53 emergency procedures were performed, compared to a median of 70 over the same period in the previous years (mean 0.87 per day versus 1.16 per day, 25.4% reduction, p=0.05).

The aim of this study was to determine the role of MD1 in myocardial infarction (MI)-related ventricular arrhythmias (VAs).

Myocardial infarction was induced by surgical ligation of the left anterior coronary artery in MD1 knockout (KO) mice and their wild-type littermates. Myocardial infarction-induced vulnerability to VAs and its underlying mechanisms were evaluated.

Myeloid differentiation protein 1 was downregulated in the MI mice. Myeloid differentiation protein 1 deficiency decreased post-MI left ventricular (LV) function and increased the infarct size. The MI mice exhibited prolonged action potential duration (APD), enhanced APD alternans thresholds, and a higher incidence of VAs. Myocardial infarction-induced LV fibrosis and inflammation decreased the expression levels of Kv4.2, Kv4.3, Kv1.5, and Kv2.1, increased Cav1.2 expression, and disturbed Ca
handling protein expression. These MI-induced adverse effects were further exacerbated in KO mice. Mechanistically, MD1 deletion markedly enhanced the activation of the TLR4/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) signalling pathway in post-MI mice.

When addressing the variable "gender" in health research designs, a distinction is made between biological ("sex") and sociocultural or psychosocial aspects ("gender"). In health research, it is important to avoid systematic errors that may result when gender aspects are inappropriately or not sufficiently addressed (so-called gender bias). A gender bias occurs, for instance, when the presence of gender differences is assumed without empirical evidence or when research data that was generated from samples of male participants is automatically applied to women. Funding institutions can create incentives for researchers to integrate gender-sensitive analyses into their research projects and to consider the potential influence of the "gender" variable. The aim of this study was to explore which explicit requirements concerning gender aspects applicants to German funding institutions in the various health sectors need to meet in their research designs.
