cantly among hospitals in this review. These variances create challenges in that their fair application may be problematic and ethical issues related to allocation may arise. Five recommendations are offered for hospitals revising or creating such policies, including that offering transparent, accessible, public-facing policies can minimize ethical dilemmas. In addition, hospitals would benefit from communicating with each other in the development of visitor policies to ensure uniformity and support patients and family members as they navigate hospital visitation. The evolution of Healthy People reflects growing awareness of health inequities over the life course. Each decade, the initiative has gained understanding of how the nation can achieve health and well-being. To inform Healthy People 2030's visionary goal of achieving health equity in the coming decade, the Secretary's Advisory Committee on National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2030 provided the US Department of Health and Human Services with guidance on key terms, frameworks, and measurement for health equity. Conditions in the environments in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age influence health and well-being outcomes, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks and are mostly responsible for health inequities. No single individual, organization, community, or sector has sole ownership, accountability, or capacity to sustain the health and well-being of an entire population. The COVID-19 pandemic in the United States highlights underlying inequities and disparities in health and health care across segments of the population. Contributing factors that were known prior to the pandemic have led to major discrepancies in rates of infection and death. Selleckchem NHWD-870 To reduce health disparities and advance health equity, systems approaches-designed to shift interconnected aspects of public health problems-are needed.
Epidemiologists working in state health agency central offices (SHA-CO) are key professionals working to monitor population health indicators. Assessing training needs to identify gaps is critical to ensuring a competent public health workforce.

The objective of this research was to identify training needs of SHA-CO epidemiologists and their awareness of emerging areas of public health practice (EAoP) using data from the 2017 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS).

SHA-CO epidemiologists were surveyed in fall 2017 using a Web-based tool. Balanced repeated replication weights were used to account for complex sample design. Differences in responses by tenure, education level, and supervisory status were assessed using multinomial logistic regression.

Forty-seven state health agencies.

Permanently employed SHA-CO epidemiologists.

Training needs were identified by classifying skill gaps as those skills that participants self-reported as high relevance to day-to-day work but self-logists.
Stratified analyses by tenure identified important differences in training needs and motivators that employers can use to customize workforce development strategies. SHA-CO epidemiologists reported varying amounts of awareness of EAoP. Specialized training approaches may contribute to improved employee engagement and reduce skill gaps among SHA-CO epidemiologists.
Healthy People 2030 (HP2030), the fifth iteration of the Healthy People initiative, provides science-based national health objectives with targets to improve the health and well-being of Americans. For the first time since its 1979 establishment, the Healthy People framework aims to attain health literacy as an Overarching Goal and Foundational Principle to achieving health and well-being. Growing literature on health literacy describes it as a concept not solely reliant on individual capabilities but also on organizations' ability to make health-related information and services equitably accessible and comprehensible.

The US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) updates the Healthy People objectives each decade based on the most current science. For the development of HP2030, the HHS drew on recommendations from the Secretary's Advisory Committee on National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2030 (Secretary's Advisory Committee), an independent advisory committee of nationahe delivery of quality health information and services.
The updated definition is intended to advance HP2030's health literacy goals particularly as more organizations in public health and other sectors acknowledge their role in the delivery of quality health information and services.
Opioid misuse and abuse continues to be a grave public health concern in the United States. The aim of this study was to use electronic health records (EHRs) from a US dental school clinic to retrospectively analyze trends in opioid prescription frequencies.

A database review was conducted using EHR data from 20 patient care clinics in a dental school over a 5-year period during which local, state, and national policies and guidelines to mitigate harm from opioid misuse were introduced.

University of Michigan School of Dentistry, state of Michigan.

Descriptive statistics using measures of frequency and distribution of opioid prescriptions written were compared over a 5-year period by dental school clinic specialty, CDT (Code on Dental Procedures and Nomenclature) procedure, drug type, and patient age/gender.

From 2014 to 2018, a total of 12 401 opioid-based prescriptions were written by dental providers in the school's patient care clinics. An ARIMA (autoregressive integrated moving average) model te as well as unique opportunities to support regional and national public health strategies aimed at reducing misuse of opioids.
The public health system faces major challenges in 2020, including an aging workforce, reductions in funding, and 2 simultaneous major threats to public health-the coronavirus pandemic and racial injustice. To effectively harness promising new technologies and address these and other public health challenges ahead, public health professionals must be trained on evidence-based practices for protecting and improving public health. This project sought to understand the network of health departments and organizations that provide training in order to inform strategic efforts to fill training gaps and improve access to training for local health departments (LHDs), thereby strengthening the public health system.

We conducted a Web-based survey of 501 LHDs in the 6 states constituting Region V of the Department of Health & Human Services. The survey focused on the training relationship between LHDs and state and national organizations that provide public health training, allowing for a social network analysis.
