How frontal cortex of these animal models compares is a source of intense debate. Here we argue that translating findings from rodents to non-human primates requires an appreciation of both the niche in which each animal forages as well as the similarities in frontal cortex anatomy and function. Consequently, we highlight similarities and differences in behavior and anatomy, before focusing on points of convergence in how parts of frontal cortex contribute to distinct aspects of foraging in rats and macaques, more specifically. In doing so, our aim is to emphasize where translation of frontal cortex function between species is clearer, where there is divergence, and where future work should focus. We finish by highlighting aspects of foraging for which have received less attention but we believe are critical to uncovering how frontal cortex promotes survival in each species.Brain α2-containing GABAA receptors play a critical role in the modulation of anxiety- and fear-like behavior. However, it is unknown whether these receptors also play a role in modulating resilience to chronic stress, and in which brain areas and cell types such an effect would be mediated. We evaluated the role of α2-containing GABAA receptors following chronic social defeat stress using male mice deficient in the α2 subunit globally or conditionally in dopamine D1- or D2-receptor-expressing neurons, e.g., within the nucleus accumbens (NAc). In addition, we examined the effect of the lack of the α2 subunit on intermediates of the glutathione synthesis pathway. We found that α2-containing GABAA receptors on D2-receptor-positive but not on D1-receptor-positive neurons promote resiliency to chronic social defeat stress, as reflected in social interaction tests. The pro-resiliency effects of α2-containing GABAA receptors on D2-receptor-positive neurons do not appear to be directly related to alterations in anxiety-like behavior, as reflected in the elevated plus-maze, light-dark box, and novel open field tests. Increases in indices of oxidative stress-reflected by increases in cystathionine levels and reductions in GSH/GSSG ratios-were found in the NAc and prefrontal cortex but not in the hippocampus of mice lacking α2-containing GABAA receptors. We conclude that α2-containing GABAA receptors within specific brain areas and cell populations promote stress resiliency independently of direct effects on anxiety-like behaviors. Over the past decade, technological and computational innovations in the study of brain connectivity have led to advances in our understanding of how brain networks function, inspiring new conceptualizations of the role of prefrontal cortex (PFC) networks in the coordination of cognitive control. In this review, we describe six key PFC networks involved in cognitive control and elucidate key principles relevant for understanding how these networks implement cognitive control. Implementation of cognitive control in a constantly changing environment depends on the dynamic and flexible organization of PFC networks. In this context, we describe major empirical and theoretical models that have emerged in recent years and describe how their functional architecture and dynamic organization supports flexible cognitive control. We take an overarching view of advances made in the past few decades and consider fundamental issues regarding PFC network function, global brain dynamics, and cognition that still need to be resolved. We conclude by clarifying important future directions for research on cognitive control and their implications for advancing our understanding of PFC networks in brain disorders.A growing preclinical and clinical body of work on the effects of chronic drug use and drug addiction has extended the scope of inquiry from the putative reward-related subcortical mechanisms to higher-order executive functions as regulated by the prefrontal cortex. Here we review the neuroimaging evidence in humans and non-human primates to demonstrate the involvement of the prefrontal cortex in emotional, cognitive, and behavioral alterations in drug addiction, with particular attention to the impaired response inhibition and salience attribution (iRISA) framework. In support of iRISA, functional and structural neuroimaging studies document a role for the prefrontal cortex in assigning excessive salience to drug over non-drug-related processes with concomitant lapses in self-control, and deficits in reward-related decision-making and insight into illness. Importantly, converging insights from human and non-human primate studies suggest a causal relationship between drug addiction and prefrontal insult, indicating that chronic drug use causes the prefrontal cortex damage that underlies iRISA while changes with abstinence and recovery with treatment suggest plasticity of these same brain regions and functions. We further dissect the overlapping and distinct characteristics of drug classes, potential biomarkers that inform vulnerability and resilience, and advancements in cutting-edge psychological and neuromodulatory treatment strategies, providing a comprehensive landscape of the human and non-human primate drug addiction literature as it relates to the prefrontal cortex.

The purpose was to reveal late health consequences and life issues after a traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI) in North Macedonia (NM).

Community dwelling adults with tSCI in NM.

Persons that sustained tSCI in 1999-2005 were selected, physical examined and a questionnaire was administered. Descriptive statistics were conducted.

From 203 eligible persons, 40 agreed to participate. Mean (range) age at time of injury was 36 (27-75) years and time since injury ranged 9-20 years. Around seventy percent reported current health problems, of which pain and spasm (>60%) were most prevalent, followed by urinary tract infections and pressure injuries. About 30% had never been to a medical specialist and ≈70% had only once been to physiotherapy after discharge from the primary inpatient period. Only one participant had a fully adjusted home for a person with a disability. Those with most severe tSCI (American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) A, B, and C) seldom left their families. NM is in need of structured rehabilitation programs and better adaption for persons with reduced mobility.FREM2 is a member of the FREM2-FRAS1-FREM1 protein complex which contributes to epithelial-mesenchymal coupling. We report a Thai woman with cryptophthalmos, dental anomalies, and oral vestibule defect. A compound heterozygous mutation (c.6499C>T; p.Arg2167Trp and c.641_642del; p.Glu214GlyfsTer135) in the FREM2 gene was identified. The frameshift variant p.Glu214GlyfsTer135 is de novo and novel. It is predicted to result in the loss of most of the functional domains. The p.Arg2167Trp mutation was predicted to disrupt both Ca2+ binding and conformational change. The Arg2167Trp mutant protein has been shown to cause partial loss of function, decrease its interaction with FREM1 and result in impaired function of the FRAS1-FREM2-FREM1 complex. Frem2 was shown to be expressed in the developing tooth and vestibular lamina. It is hypothesized that these mutations resulted in aberration of the FRAS1-FREM2-FREM1 protein complex, resulting in loss of nephronectin, basement membrane disruption, and abnormal epithelial-mesenchymal interactions leading to dental and oral vestibule malformations.
Language difficulties of very preterm (VPT) children might be related to weaker cerebral hemispheric lateralization of language. Language lateralization refers to the development of an expert region for language processing in the left hemisphere during the first years of life. Children born VPT might not develop such a dominant left hemisphere for language processing. A dichotic listening task may be a functional task to show the dominance of the left hemisphere during language processing. During this task, different acoustic events are simultaneously presented to both ears. Due to crossing fibers in the brain, right ear stimuli are transferred directly to the left hemisphere, and left ear stimuli are transferred first to the right hemisphere and then, through the corpus callosum (CC), to the left hemisphere. Dichotic listening typically shows a right ear advantage, assuming to reflect left hemispherical language dominance. The CC, in particular the splenium, is associated with auditory processing and is co our results could be validated in future research, it suggests that poor CC development may indicate VPT children at risk for long-term language problems.Bacteria have highly flexible pangenomes, which are thought to facilitate evolutionary responses to environmental change, but the impacts of environmental stress on pangenome evolution remain unclear. Using a landscape pangenomics approach, I demonstrate that environmental stress leads to consistent, continuous reduction in genome content along four environmental stress gradients (acidity, aridity, heat, salinity) in naturally occurring populations of Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens (widespread soil-dwelling plant mutualists). Using gene-level network and duplication functional traits to predict accessory gene distributions across environments, genes predicted to be superfluous are more likely lost in high stress, while genes with multi-functional roles are more likely retained. Genes with higher probabilities of being lost with stress contain significantly higher proportions of codons under strong purifying and positive selection. Gene loss is widespread across the entire genome, with high gene-retention hotspots in close spatial proximity to core genes, suggesting Bradyrhizobium has evolved to cluster essential-function genes (accessory genes with multifunctional roles and core genes) in discrete genomic regions, which may stabilise viability during genomic decay. In conclusion, pangenome evolution through genome streamlining are important evolutionary responses to environmental change. This raises questions about impacts of genome streamlining on the adaptive capacity of bacterial populations facing rapid environmental change.Cyanate is utilized by many microbes as an organic nitrogen source. The key enzyme for cyanate metabolism is cyanase, converting cyanate to ammonium and carbon dioxide. Although the cyanase gene cynS has been identified in many species, the diversity, prevalence, and expression of cynS in marine microbial communities remains poorly understood. Here, based on the full-length cDNA sequence of a dinoflagellate cynS and 260 homologs across the tree of life, we extend the conserved nature of cyanases by the identification of additional ultra-conserved residues as part of the modeled holoenzyme structure. Our phylogenetic analysis showed that horizontal gene transfer of cynS appears to be more prominent than previously reported for bacteria, archaea, chlorophytes, and metazoans. Quantitative analyses of marine planktonic metagenomes revealed that cynS is as prevalent as ureC (urease subunit alpha), suggesting that cyanate plays an important role in nitrogen metabolism of marine microbes. Highly abundant cynS transcripts from phytoplankton and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria identified in global ocean metatranscriptomes indicate that cyanases potentially occupy a key position in the marine nitrogen cycle by facilitating photosynthetic assimilation of organic N and its remineralisation to NO3 by the activity of nitrifying bacteria.
