The EMG signals during active tasks (four different facial expressions) and resting task were collected with a HD array of EMG electrodes from forehead and cheek muscles. To visualize facial EMG activities, the EMG maps were reconstructed from the HD-EMG recordings. The two-dimension (2D) correlation coefficients between right and left sides of facial EMG maps were calculated to evaluate the symmetry of facial muscle activities during these tasks. Our experimental results showed that the 2D correlation coefficients during active tasks were different significantly (P less then 0.01) between the healthy group(n=4) and Bell's palsy group(n=3). These results demonstrated that the synchronism of facial muscle activities during active tasks in healthy subjects is greater than that in the Bell's palsy subjects. This pilot study suggested that HD-EMG would be a potential technique to assess abnormal asymmetric activities of facial muscles for Bell's palsy.Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by its hallmark motor symptoms of bradykinesia and tremor. Numerous studies have suggested novel quantification methods of its symptoms. However, there lacks the means to accurately assess improvements in an intraoperative setting during deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrode implantation. This study introduces a methodology to quantify selected PD motor symptoms in such a restrictive environment using a wireless Leap Motion sensor. The result suggests that utilizing the Leap Motion sensor intraoperatively is feasible for quantifying motor parameters for bradykinesia and resting tremor of a PD patient.Motor function and coordination improve as children age. Robotic assessments of motor function and coordination have been shown to be repeatable, objective, and accurate. Additionally, robotic assessments have been used to measure and quantify deficits in motor function and coordination in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Normative models of motor function and coordination based on age have not been used widely to differentiate impaired performance from typical performance. This study presents preliminary results of identifying deficits in motor function and coordination assessed with a robotic reaching task and using a normative model of typical performance that accounts for age, sex, and handedness. The models were compared with data from three participants with CP to evaluate whether the models could be used to identify deficits in motor function. The models indicated motor deficits in one participant when performing a visually guided reaching task with respect to initial speed and distance ratios. There was no evidence of motor control deficits in the other two participants. Future work will refine the models to be able to better identify and quantify motor control impairments with the potential to target therapy around quantifiable goals.Recent studies have shown a positive effect of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), a noninvasive brain stimulation technique, on cognitive function of healthy individuals [1]. However, investigation into the effects of tACS on individuals with dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is lacking. In this pilot study, we investigated the hypothesis that following a regular schedule of challenging brain exercises combined with simultaneous tACS application would improve the working memory and cognitive function of older adults with memory impairments. Further, we explored whether pairing brain exercises with tACS would result in longer-lasting positive effects on cognitive function than brain exercises alone. A total of 17 older adults (12 males, 5 females, 70 ± 7 years), each with a diagnosis of mild to moderate dementia were enrolled in the study. All participants completed brain exercises in the lab on the following schedule two 30-minute sessions per day, 5 days/week for 4 weeks consecutively. Eleven of the participants received brain exercises paired with tACS application at 40Hz. We evaluated cognitive function of the participants at baseline, post-intervention and 1-month followup using the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS-IV) as an independent assessment of our brain exercises. Both the non-tACS and tACS groups significantly improved their WMS scores from baseline to post-intervention assessments. Comparison of the post-intervention and 1-month follow-up assessments indicated that the tACS group maintained their improvement significantly better than the non-tACS group.In this study we evaluate the application of video-based markerless motion tracking based on deep neural networks for the analysis of ataxia-specific movement abnormalities in rodent models of cerebellar ataxia. Based on a small amount ( less then 100) of manually labeled video frames, markerless motion tracking enabled the extraction of movement trajectories and parameters characterizing ataxia-specific movement abnormalities. In the first experiment, we analyzed videos of 6 shaker and 4 wildtype rats and were able to reproduce thê5 Hz tremor frequency in the shaker rat without the usage of a force plate. In the second experiment, we investigated a spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) mouse model (6 mice aged 3 months and 3 mice aged 9 months) in a beam-balancing task. By establishing a parameter for the assessment of rhythmicity of gait (RoG), we not only found a significantly higher RoG in wildtype mice compared to affected SCA3 mice aged 9 months, but were also able to reveal a significantly lower than typical RoG in SCA3 mice aged 3 months which exhibit no abnormalities in visual inspection. These prototypical results suggest the capability of the presented methods for the application in upcoming therapeutic intervention trials to identify subtle changes in movement behavior.
