Upgrades will give you a boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by +3. A random additional substat is also boosted alongside every upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless the item has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like the eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as useful for those with lower requirements due to the need to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied on any kind of armor or weapons. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create the enchantments.

The upgrader is located in every major city, and can be visited at any time to upgrade your equipment. To keep your gear current it is recommended that you visit the upgrader each few weeks.

The cost of upgrades will be based on the current item level of the equipment being upgraded but they will always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment from other sources. For example upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points, while purchasing the same item from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to level up weapons tools, armor, and other items. They are purchased by players through item upgrader NPCs in exchange for different currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade is purchased it can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor with an button, which will display an item's preview when it is upgraded when the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the item slot and the current level of the item, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers for instance. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with certain upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of the Flightstones or crests used. After an item has been upgraded to a certain level it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price.

Upgraders for items can be found in a variety of locations including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer an upgrade coupon as well as the possibility of getting an entirely new recipe. The upgrade discount increases depending on the amount of items being upgraded. It can also be boosted by requiring players to complete specific achievements or quests.

Contrary to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II is no item upgrader available at the beginning of Icewind Dale. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are available only through a variety of methods. This is both a benefit and a drawback.

Crests

Players have several options when it comes to upgrading their gear in WoW. Crests are an important component of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System, which was introduced in version 10.1. They come in four ranks.

Using these new currencies isn't too difficult, but the system does introduce some modifications to the upgrade process. For example, once an item is at the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is designed to allow players to upgrade their gear up to the highest ilvl possible on all their characters instead of relying only on seasonal loot.


It's also important to use crests with care, since they have only one purpose. For instance, it's a good idea to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment available and keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you're planning to create. This is particularly true for items such as rings and trinkets that occupy several slots. The discount for the entire account is only applicable when all slots on the character are filled with high-quality equipment.
