nce was achieved for the prepared membranes even after four adsorption/regeneration cycles in the continuous UF experiments, demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of the prepared adsorptive nanofiber membranes for the removal of heavy metal ions.Thermus thermophilus laccase belongs to the sub-class of multicopper oxidases that is activated by the extra binding of copper to a methionine-rich domain allowing an electron pathway from the substrate to the conventional first electron acceptor, the T1 Cu. In this work, two key amino acid residues in the 1st and 2nd coordination spheres of T1 Cu are mutated in view of tuning their redox potential and investigating their influence on copper-related activity. Evolution of the kinetic parameters after copper addition highlights that both mutations play a key role influencing the enzymatic activity in distinct unexpected ways. These results clearly indicate that the methionine rich domain is not the only actor in the cuprous oxidase activity of CueO-like enzymes.High quality genome is of great significance for the mining of biological information resources of species. Up to now, the genomic information of several important economic flatfishes has been well explained. All these fishes are eyes on left side-type, and no high-quality genome of eyes on right side-type species has been reported. In this study, we applied a combined strategy involving stLFR and Hi-C technologies to generate sequencing data for constructing the chromosomal genome of Verasper variegates, which belongs to Pleuronectidae with characteristic of eyes on right side. The size of genome of V. variegatus is 556 Mb. More than 97.2% of BUSCO genes were detected, and N50 lengths of the contigs and scaffolds reached 79.8 Kb and 23.8 Mb, respectively, demonstrating the outstanding completeness and sequence continuity of the genome. A total of 22,199 protein-coding genes were predicted in the assembled genome, and more than 95% of those genes could be functionally annotated. Meanwhile, the genomic collinearity, gene family and phylogenetic analyses of similar species in Pleuronectiformes were also investigated and portrayed for metamorphosis and benthic adaptation. Sex related genes mapping has also been achieved at the chromosome level. This study is the first chromosomal level genome of a Pleuronectidae fish (V. variegatus). The chromosomal genome assembly constructed in this work will not only be valuable for conservation and aquaculture studies of the V. Tubacin ic50 variegatus but will also be of general interest in the phylogenetic and taxonomic studies of Pleuronectiformes.Laser-Ultrasonics Testing (LUT) is a Non-Destructive Technique (NDT) with good potential for application in the railway sector, nevertheless this technique is not yet used in practice because there are some practical difficulties to overcome. The possibility of measuring on a complete wheelset by bypassing the keying of the wheel will allow drastically reducing the inspection time but it has not yet been demonstrated. In fact, the attenuation of the signal in the path makes complex the interpretation of the generated waves. This paper aims at illustrating how the combination of simulated and experimental data allows to optimize the test setup for having output data of unambiguous interpretation. The main innovations presented in this paper are (i) the possibility to work with low energy waves in the thermoelastic-ablative limit while maintaining satisfactory contrast levels for the purpose of defect detection and (ii) the implementation of a complete Finite Element Model (FEM) including the generation and propagation of waves in the solid domain and the propagation in air. This last step has not considered before in previous papers. The model allows to define the optimal experimental conditions to have a measured signal with an adequate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR > 6 dB) and to define an experimental procedure for defect detection reliable and comparable with current standards. This study lays the foundations for an innovative approach for train axle diagnostics which can be used during train extraordinary maintenance interventions. The laser ultrasonics system presented in this paper can be likely integrated in the pit lathe and exploited to monitor the railway wheels during their re-profiling phase, without having to remove them from the vehicle.Plane wave compounding (PWC) is a valid method for ultrafast ultrasound imaging. Its imaging quality depends on the beamforming method. The coherence factor (CF) and Wiener postfilter are effective signal processing schemes for aberration correction. However, the CF usually causes over-suppression and brings artifacts. Additionally, the conventional CF and Wiener postfilter cannot fully utilize the spatial coherence in the PWC, which limits the imaging performance and increases the computation. In this paper, we propose a united Wiener postfilter specially for the PWC. The signal and noise power are both estimated through the echo signal matrix, rather than array signal vectors. The method also accords with the theoretical relationship between the CF and Wiener. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we conduct simulations, phantom and in vivo experiments and make comparisons with the delay-and-sum (DAS), the CF, the generalized coherence factor (GCF), the conventional Wiener and the scaled Wiener beamformers. Results indicate that our method can offer the better resolution and contrast than the DAS and Wiener. It also solves the over-suppression drawback of the CF. Specifically, the contrast ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio achieve 26.7% and 25.2% improvements in simulations, 28.7% and 32.4% in phantom experiments, respectively. The proposed method also performs well in terms of the speckle signal-to-noise ratio and the generalized contrast-to-noise ratio. Consequently, we believe that the proposed method is effective in enhancing the imaging quality of the PWC.
In the first wave, thrombotic complications were common in COVID-19 patients. It is unknown whether state-of-the-art treatment has resulted in less thrombotic complications in the second wave.
We assessed the incidence of thrombotic complications and overall mortality in COVID-19 patients admitted to eight Dutch hospitals between September 1st and November 30th 2020. Follow-up ended at discharge, transfer to another hospital, when they died, or on November 30th 2020, whichever came first. Cumulative incidences were estimated, adjusted for competing risk of death. These were compared to those observed in 579 patients admitted in the first wave, between February 24th and April 26th 2020, by means of Cox regression techniques adjusted for age, sex and weight.
In total 947 patients with COVID-19 were included in this analysis, of whom 358 patients were admitted to the ICU; 144 patients died (15%). The adjusted cumulative incidence of all thrombotic complications after 10, 20 and 30days was 12% (95% confidence interval (CI) 9.
