The hemodynamic support of the pump seems to counterbalance the adverse effects of these events.
Pasteurized donor milk (PDM) is typically prescribed to preterm or low birthweight newborns when their mother's own milk is unavailable. In surplus, PDM is prescribed to meet the nutritional needs of healthy newborns in the first few days of life. However, its overuse can undermine efforts to promote and support breastfeeding, waste resources, and reduce the availability of PDM for at-risk newborns. We conducted this study to examine factors associated with the prescription and prolonged use (>48 h) of privately purchased PDM to healthy newborns.
Prospective observational study of 2440 mothers of healthy, term, and normal birthweight newborns born at Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children between April and August 2019. In addition to the descriptive analysis, we performed multiple logistic regressions to examine factors associated with the prescription of PDM (
= 2440) and prolonged PDM use among those who used PDM (
= 566).
Twenty-three percent (566/2440) of healthy, term, and birthweight ≥2500aff, development, and application of strict criteria on PDM use for healthy newborns and better routine monitoring of PDM use over time.
The prescription and prolonged use of privately purchased PDM was associated with non-medical factors unrelated to the ability to breastfeed effectively. The findings suggest the need for improved breastfeeding communication, counseling and support skills for health staff, development, and application of strict criteria on PDM use for healthy newborns and better routine monitoring of PDM use over time.Vitamin D deficiency is a global issue which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic-related lockdowns. Fortification of food staples with vitamin D provides a solution to alleviate this problem. This research explored the use of pea protein nanoemulsion (PPN) to improve the stability of vitamin D in various food products. PPN was created using a pH-shifting and ultrasonication combined method. The physicochemical properties were studied, including particle size, foaming ability, water holding capacity, antioxidant activity, and total phenolic contents. The fortification of several food formulations (non-fat cow milk, canned orange juice, orange juice powder, banana milk, and infant formula) with vitamin D-PPN was investigated and compared to raw untreated pea protein (UPP) regarding their color, viscosity, moisture content, chemical composition, vitamin D stability, antioxidant activity, and morphology. Finally, a sensory evaluation (quantitative descriptive analysis, and consumer testing) was conducted. The results show that PPN with a size of 21.8 nm protected the vitamin D in all tested products. PPN may serve as a potential carrier and stabilizer of vitamin D in food products with minimum effects on the taste and color. selleck chemical Hence, PPN may serve as a green and safe method for food fortification during the COVID-19 pandemic.Diffusion-weighted imaging is a non-invasive functional imaging modality for breast tumor characterization through apparent diffusion coefficients. Yet, it has so far been unable to intuitively inform on tissue microstructure. In this IRB-approved prospective study, we applied novel multidimensional diffusion (MDD) encoding across 16 patients with suspected breast cancer to evaluate its potential for tissue characterization in the clinical setting. Data acquired via custom MDD sequences was processed using an algorithm estimating non-parametric diffusion tensor distributions. The statistical descriptors of these distributions allow us to quantify tissue composition in terms of metrics informing on cell densities, shapes, and orientations. Additionally, signal fractions from specific cell types, such as elongated cells (bin1), isotropic cells (bin2), and free water (bin3), were teased apart. Histogram analysis in cancers and healthy breast tissue showed that cancers exhibited lower mean values of "size" (1.43 ± 0.54 × 10-3 mm2/s) and higher mean values of "shape" (0.47 ± 0.15) corresponding to bin1, while FGT (fibroglandular breast tissue) presented higher mean values of "size" (2.33 ± 0.22 × 10-3 mm2/s) and lower mean values of "shape" (0.27 ± 0.11) corresponding to bin3 (p less then 0.001). Invasive carcinomas showed significant differences in mean signal fractions from bin1 (0.64 ± 0.13 vs. 0.4 ± 0.25) and bin3 (0.18 ± 0.08 vs. 0.42 ± 0.21) compared to ductal carcinomas in situ (DCIS) and invasive carcinomas with associated DCIS (p = 0.03). MDD enabled qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the composition of breast cancers and healthy glands.Recently, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, several lockdown and stay-at-home regulations have been implemented worldwide. In this regard, loneliness has been identified as the signature mental health consequence of this pandemic. The aim of this study is to explore the associations among loneliness, hopelessness, depression, ego-resilience and life satisfaction in a random sample of young adults (N = 337) at a university in the Western Cape of South Africa. Parallel and serial mediation analysis supported the hypothesis that loneliness is associated with hopelessness, which in turn is associated with depression, and that ego-resilience mediates the association between all the negative indices of psychological well-being and life satisfaction. These findings suggest that mental health interventions that boost ego-resilience and target loneliness may help in dealing with the mental health consequences of COVID-19.Watermelon is the second largest fruit crop worldwide, with great potential to valorise its rind waste. An experimental design was used to model how extraction parameters (temperature, pH, and time) impact on the efficiency of the process, purity, esterification degree, monosaccharide composition and molar mass of watermelon rind pectin (WRP), with an insight on changes in their structural properties (linearity, branching degree and extraction severity). The models for all responses were accurately fitted (R2 > 90%, lack of fit p ≥ 0.05) and experimentally validated. At optimum yield conditions, WRP yield (13.4%), purity (540 µg/g galacturonic acid) and molar mass (106.1 kDa) were comparable to traditional pectin sources but showed a higher branching degree with longer galactan side chains and a higher protein interaction. Harsher conditions (pH 1) generated purer homogalacturonan fractions with average molar masses (80 kDa) at the expense of yield, while mild extraction conditions (pH ≥ 2) produced highly branched entangled pectin structures.
