Upgrades to items can be used to improve the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type, it may increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.

Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its basic stats are increased in value. This value is the total of all the leveled up perks (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive, depending on the upgrader you choose and what kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is because of how many perks need to be replaced to allow the item to be upgraded.

Item level is a popular measure of power, and can be seen on all tooltips for items. It is also used to determine a gating condition when waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is capped at a lower level). The average level of the item can be found on the character sheet.


Using the item level can help players compare the potency of gear when choosing to buy or sell. It's an indicator of the item's damage and its quality. The level of the item can be used to compare items when evaluating the inventory of a seller.

On your PC, you can view the item level using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the complete description of the item, as well as its ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering an item with the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are a few theories about how the calculation of an item's level is done. One theory states that the level of an item is calculated using an equation that determines the worth of an item's stats actually are. It considers that different advantages are valued differently and that gems found in sockets increase the item's value. This can result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl which is typically close to Blizzard's real item level.

However, this isn't the only factor that determines the ilvl of an item, because the level of the region the item dropped in can alter the value of its stats, for instance by adding a level to its haste rating or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl.

Item Stats

Item stats can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game uses a lot of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the most effective." The stats of a base weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat mods that are in turn boosted by the player's level.

Item upgrades add to that by increasing certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines the cost of upgrading. For example, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, whereas an item with rare tiers can be upgraded many times with higher prices.

Affixes are another way to alter the stats of an item. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and they come in all sizes and shapes. The affixes could be used to give the item extra damage, add a special ability to the item (such as reviving the dead or decreasing cooldowns), or make the item unique by giving an exclusive name to the item.

All affixes can be currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade window, and pressing the green button. This procedure will cost the player a certain amount of gold and other items which can be added to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as other options for rerolling.

Players can choose to upgrade an item to a specific stat, or reroll attaches. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However each item will contain at least one stat within the range, unless they are an item that is unique, or a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

This is another aspect that can be modified by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without rolling the affixes, or selecting which stats to increase. Similar to the base equipment, this must be done per item, and the interface for item comparison will not show all possible stats simultaneously.

Item Luck

The Luck stat for a player adds up to increase the chances of item discoveries as well as the properties that appear on loot drops, and the intensity of those properties. It doesn't, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to acquire better equipment earlier in the game and is thus more valuable in early game runs than later ones as most players prioritize higher weapon scaling and defenses over raw damage gains.

Luck can also increase the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance that increases with each level of the item and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can be made or spawn with the Luck property, with a default value of 40. These items can be enhanced by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the type of material) to add another 40 luck, or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.

Moreover there are certain items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be used to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be bought from the shop or made using the correct ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to boost the success rate of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their item if it does not work.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of completing the upgrade successfully and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on how much the success rates can be improved and the probability of an upgrade failing cannot be greater than 100%..

The luck of an item may influence the success of an upgrade. All items have an average success rate of 25%, and every item that has Luck increases that chance by an additional 5%.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the inventory items which means that enchantment glints and other effects could be obscured by the overlays. If item upgrade wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
