Players can upgrade their weapons and equipment using new accessories. They can also boost the base stats of the item or provide additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors trinkets, weapons, and gathering tools. They can be used as an attribute benefit, or additional effect, when the equipment is in use. To upgrade the quality of a weapon, armor or other item in the game, players will have to select it and click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. The screen will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview of the expected upgrade statistics and the required component or materials.

There are three kinds of upgrade components that are universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which include gems, are able to be used in any type of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions, which can only be placed in ascended gear and legendary equipment, are the same as jewels but provide larger bonuses and are not able to be placed in any other equipment. Suffix upgrades that can be put in gathering tools, will include their name at the end of the name of the item they are attached to, for example adding the word Glyph to the Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor will transform it into a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

In the case of upgrades for gathering tools, if a player replaces one glyph with a different one the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component, it will be destroyed, except for the inscriptions, which are able to be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant differences from previous versions. Gear is now categorised in tracks and each item can be upgraded as many times before it is "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, but the materials needed do not.
