An in-bore magnetostrictive transducer is designed for the steam generator tubes of Prototype fast breeder reactor for the generation of L(0,2) modes of frequencies in the range of 250-350 kHz. Towards this, axi-symmetric finite element models are developed to optimize the coil parameters. The optimized length of the transmitter and the receiver coils turns out to be 10 mm (~half the wavelength) for the frequency of 300 kHz. The optimized width of the coils turns out to be 0.46 mm. FE models also show the generation, propagation and reception of L(0,2) modes in the frequency range of 250-350 kHz. The role of skin effect in the magnetostrictive based-generation of L(0,2) modes with frequency is also discussed. A transducer is designed based on the FE results. The transducer is tested for the generation of L(0,2) mode in the frequency range of 250-350 kHz in a 1 m long steam generator tube segment. A good agreement is observed between FE and experimental normalized amplitudes and the times of flight for differe dB lower as compared to that obtained using a piezo based ultrasonic transducer of frequency 300 kHz coupled to the end of the tube. Hemicellulose-rich substrates produced in the lignocellulose biorefinery context can yield macromolecular xylan structures with assorted application in the chemical industry. Xylan presents natural affinity to cellulose and its incorporation onto fibers increases the physical processability of pulp; however, current studies diverge on how molar mass affects xylan interaction with cellulose. In the current work, xylans with varied structural characteristics were prepared from alkaline-sulfite pretreated sugarcane bagasse with aid of an alkaline-active xylanase and selective precipitations using different ethanol concentrations. Prepared xylan fractions, containing low levels of lignin contamination (4-9%) and molar masses ranging from 2.3 kDa to 34 kDa, were incorporated onto eucalyptus pulp fibers up to 4.7 g xylan/100 g pulp. The efficiency of xylan incorporation onto cellulosic fibers was dependent on the xylan structures, where low molar mass and low substitution degree favored high incorporation levels. BACKGROUND White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are associated with cognitive impairment. The impact of WMH on cognitive domains (e.g. processing speed, executive functioning) depends on location. We determined whether the relevance of WMH location also applies to global cognitive functioning by testing if WMH in strategic white matter tracts are associated with global cognitive functioning independent of total WMH burden. METHODS We included 830 community-dwelling individuals. WMH volume within two a priori specified strategic white matter tracts (forceps minor and anterior thalamic radiation) were entered in a linear regression model with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) as outcome variables and corrected for total WMH volume and other MRI markers for vascular injury and neurodegenerations (i.e. brain parenchymal fraction, and the presence of lacunes and microbleeds). RESULTS WMH in the forceps minor and left anterior thalamic radiation inversely correlated with MoCA, and WMH in the forceps minor inversely correlated with MMSE, independent of total WMH volume and other MRI markers. CONCLUSION The impact of WMH on global cognitive functioning depends on location. Whether this reflects accumulated impairment in isolated cognitive domains or disruption of a network that is crucially involved in global cognitive performance remains to be determined. V.PURPOSE We examined dopamine transporter (DAT) binding in Japanese patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (IRBD) as a biomarker for the development of Lewy body disease (LBD). METHODS [123I]FP-CIT SPECT (DAT-SPECT) scans of 74 IRBD patients were compared to those from healthy Japanese subjects, and the predictive value for conversion to LBD during a 5-year follow-up was evaluated. RESULTS Baseline DAT deficits (Z-score ≤ -2.5) were observed in 25 (33.8%) of the IRBD patients. During follow-up, 25 patients (33.8%) developed LBD [19 Parkinson's disease and 6 dementia with Lewy bodies], with a mean latency of 2.4 ± 1.6 years from imaging. The receiver operating characteristics curve revealed that the Z-score of baseline DAT binding in the striatum of abnormal DAT-SPECT patients who later developed LBD differed from those who remained disease-free. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed an increased risk of LBD in patients with a Z-score ≤ -2.5 for DAT binding in the striatum of abnormal DAT-SPECT patients compared to patients with a Z-score > -2.5. CONCLUSIONS DAT-SPECT identifies IRBD patients at short-term risk for developing LBD. Decreased DAT binding in the striatum (Z-score ≤ -2.5) predicts development of LBD within 5 years, and may be useful in future disease-prevention trials in IRBD patients. Dirofilaria immitis is a parasitic filarial nematode responsible for heartworm disease in domestic as well as wild canines and felines and pulmonary or cutaneous infections in humans. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the status of D. immitis in dogs based on available literature. Four English language databases (ISI Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed and Science Direct) containing data on D. immitis prevalence in dogs were thoroughly searched resulting in the inclusion of 193 studies. The findings revealed that the pooled and weighted prevalence of D. immitis infection in dog population based on published papers throughout the world was 10.91% (95% CI=10.18-11.65). In addition, subgroup analysis based on meta-regression revealed that a significant difference between the pooled and weighted prevalence of D. immitis in dogs and country (β =0.14, P=0.049). Given the relatively high prevalence of D. immitis infection in dogs and its adverse effects, it is suggested that to perform more research on the prevention and control of dirofilariasis infection in dogs worldwide.
