Further prospective studies are required to assess the association between food patterns and NAFLD.Data on the effect of grape seed extract (GSE) on lipid profiles are inconclusive. We undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled clinical trials on the effect of GSE on serum lipid profiles. The online databases of PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, Science Direct and Embase were searched for relevant publications until March 2019, using MeSH and non-MeSH keywords. Study selection, data extraction and quality assessment were completed independently by two investigators. Meta-regression and subgroup analyses were performed to identify the source of heterogeneity. Assessment of study quality was conducted using the Jaddad scale. Eleven randomized clinical trials involving 536 participants were included in the present meta-analysis. Combining effect sizes from earlier studies, we found that GSE supplementation significantly decreased serum levels of LDL-cholesterol (-0.17 mmol/L; 95%CI -0.34, -0.01) and triglycerides (-0.11 mmol/L; 95%CI -0.18, -0.05). Although no overall significant effect of GSE supplementation on circulating total- and HDL-cholesterol levels were observed, there were significant reductions in these lipids in studies with less than 10 weeks of intervention and those that had administered the dosages of less than 300 mg/d of GSE. In conclusion, GSE supplementation seems to favourably affect serum levels of LDL and triglyceride concentrations, but it did not affect total- and HDL-cholesterol concentrations.The aim of the present work was to compare the capacity to modulate the intestinal microbiota and the production of metabolites after 14 days administration of a commercial dietary supplement and a manufactured ice cream, both containing the same quantity of inulin and the same viable counts of Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 and Bifidobacterium animalis BB-12, using the Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME®) model. Samples of the colonic contents were evaluated microbiologically by qRT-PCR and next generation sequencing, and chemically by the production of short chain fatty acids (acetate, propionate and butyrate) and ammonium ions (NH4+). Statistical analyses were carried out for all the variables using the two-way ANOVA analysis followed by the Tukey multiple comparisons test (p less then 0.05) for metabolite production, qRT-PCR and the bioinformatics analysis for microbiota diversity. Dietary supplement and ice cream were able to deliver the probiotic L. acidophilus and B. check details animalis to the simulated colon and modulate the microbiota, increasing beneficial microorganisms such as Bifidobacterium spp., Bacteroides spp. and Faecalibacterium spp. for dietary supplement administration, and Lactobacillus spp. for ice cream supplementation. However, the ice cream matrix was probably more favorable for the maintenance of the metabolic activity of the probiotics in the SHIME® model, due to the larger amounts of acetate, propionate, butyrate and ammonium ions obtained after 14 days of supplementation. In conclusion both ways of probiotic supplementation could be efficient, each with its own particularities.BACKGROUND Recently, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been shown to have immunomodulatory properties which hold promise for their clinical use to treat inflammatory conditions. Relative to bone marrow-derived MSCs (BMSCs), which are typically isolated from the iliac crest, we have recently demonstrated that MSCs can be predictably isolated from the alveolar bone (aBMSCs) by less invasive means. As such, the aim of this study was to characterize the immunomodulatory properties of aBMSCs relative to BMSCs. METHODS aBMSCs isolated from the human alveolar bone and BMSCs isolated from the human bone marrow of the iliac crest were cultured in the same conditions. Cytokine arrays and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) of a conditioned medium were used to evaluate differences in the secretion of cytokines. In different functional assays, aBMSCs and BMSCs were cocultured with different types of immune cells including THP-1 monocytes, macrophages, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to evaluate theed to treat inflammatory conditions using aBMSCs, a more feasible tissue source of MSCs.BACKGROUND Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a rare, yet severe, iatrogenic complication of ovulation induction therapy during assisted reproductive procedures. Our group previously detected atypical cells in the ascitic fluid of OHSS patients, although no malignancy developed during follow up. Here, the aim was to perform a comparative analysis of the cytokines present in the abdominal fluid of patients affected by OHSS versus patients with advanced ovarian cancer, a benign adnexal mass, or ovarian endometriosis. METHODS This prospective, non-randomized study was conducted at the Clinical Center of the University of Pecs Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology/Reproductive Center between October 2016 and March 2018. Abdominal fluid samples were obtained from 76 patients and subjected to Luminex analysis. The samples were collected from patients with OHSS (OHSS; n = 16), advanced ovarian cancer (OC; n = 22), a benign adnexal mass (BAM; n = 21), or ovarian endometriosis (EM; n = 17). The development and commercialization of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines illustrate how licensing practices of public research organizations can contribute to high prices of the resulting product and affect accessibility to vulnerable populations. Efforts by the international community to improve access to medicines have recognised this issue and promote the public health-sensitive management of research conducted by public research organizations. This paper explores how medical knowledge is exchanged between public and private actors; what role inventor scientists play in this process; and how they view the implementation of public health-sensitive knowledge exchange strategies. METHODS We conducted a systematic qualitative literature review on medical knowledge exchange and qualitative interviews with a purposive sample of public sector scientists working on HPV vaccines.
