Knee osteoarthritis (OA) affects the quality of life (QOL) and balance control of elderly people; our study explored the balance factors that affected the QOL in patients with knee OA.
To determine the balance factors that affected the QOL of patients with knee OA who attended general clinics.
A total of 30 healthy controls and 60 patients with mild-to-moderate bilateral knee OA, all aged 55-75 years, were enrolled in our cross-sectional study. All participants were interviewed; the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey was used to assess their QOL in eight dimensions, and the Balance Master System was used to evaluate their balance control according to six parameters. Descriptive statistics were used to reduce the data; an independent
-test determined differences between the two groups, and a multiple regression analysis was undertaken to establish associations between variables from the balance control test and SH36 physical and mental health components. The level of statistical significance was set at 5%.
In the OA group, significant negative correlations were observed between sway velocity and the physical health component (
= 0.003) and between sway velocity and the mental health component (
= 0.006). Thus, sway velocity had a major impact on the QOL of patients with knee OA.
The sway velocity at the centre of gravity in balance control was a crucial factor for determining the QOL of patients with bilateral knee OA.
Sway velocity is a key factor affecting the QOL and may provide a basis to formulate preventive actions and design treatment goals for patients with knee OA.

A cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2017 to July 2018 on randomly selected carcasses from Jigjiga, Babile and Dire Dawa town municipal abattoirs to estimate the prevalence of bovine cysticercosis. Besides, a questionnaire was administered to the human population of these towns to understand risk of human taeniasis. The overall prevalence of Cysticercus bovis was 27.3% (302/1108). Among the examined predilection sites, the highest prevalence was observed in the liver (9.6%), and the tongue (8.5%). From the total of 686C. bovis cysts collected, 289 (42.0%) were viable, while the other 397 (58.0%) were non-viable cysts. Three predictors, namely study location, age and body condition, were significantly associated with C. bovis (p ≤ 0.001). Among the 900 respondents interviewed, 432 had contracted Taenia saginata infection. Risk factors like occupation, sex, marital status, educational status and raw beef consumption habit were significantly associated with T. saginata infection (p ≤ 0.001). check details The findings of this study indicated the importance of bovine cysticercosis and taeniasis in the study areas. Therefore, attention should be given to public awareness and detailed meat inspection for the safety of the public and promotion of the country's meat industry.
In radiotherapy the timely identification of patients needing intervention and supportive care due to side effects is an important task especially in the outpatient setting. Activity trackers as an increasingly used lifestyle device may enable physicians to monitor patient's physical activity (PA) and to intervene early during the course of radiotherapy.
The primary aim of this trial was to assess patient acceptance of PA monitoring in an outpatient setting and to correlate changes in PA with toxicity and changes in quality of life.
Patients undergoing radio(chemo-)therapy with a curative intent were eligible to participate in this prospective pilot phase II trial. Patients were instructed to wear a commercially available activity tracker during the course of radiotherapy and four weeks afterwards. Quality of life (QoL) and fatigue was scored using the Functional assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy questionnaire. A linear regression was performed to determine baseline activity and changes in step counents.
Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT) is being increasingly implemented into clinical practice across a number of techniques and irradiation-sites. This technology, which is provided by different vendors, can be used with most simulation- and delivery-systems. However, limited guidelines and the complexity of clinical settings have led to diverse patterns of operation. With the aim to understand current clinical practice a survey was designed focusing on specifics of the clinical implementation and usage.
A 32-question survey covered type and number of systems, quality assurance (QA), clinical workflows, and identification of strengths/limitations. Respondents from different professional groups and countries were invited to participate. The survey was distributed internationally via ESTRO-membership, social media and vendors.
Of the 278 institutions responding, 172 had at least one SGRT-system and 136 use SGRT clinically. Implementation and QA were primarily based on the vendors' recommendations and phantoms. SGRT was mainly implemented in breast RT (116/136), with strong but diverse representation of other sites. Many (58/135) reported at least partial elimination of skin-marks and a third (43/126) used open-masks. The most common imaging protocol reported included the combination of radiographic imaging with SGRT. Patient positioning (115/136), motion management (104/136) and DIBH (99/136) were the main applications.Main barriers to broader application were cost, system integration issues and lack of demonstrated clinical value. A lack of guidelines in terms of QA of the system was highlighted.
This overview of the SGRT status has the potential to support users, vendors and organisations in the development of practices, products and guidelines.

PD-1 and PD-L1 are involved in anticancer immunosurveillance, and their expression may be predictive for therapeutic effectiveness of specific antibodies. Their influence on response to neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy (RCT) and prognosis in patients with oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) remains to be defined.
Between 10/2004 and 06/2018, complete pre-RCT biopsy-specimens were available from 76 patients with locally advanced, non-metastatic OAC scheduled for trimodality therapy. We evaluated intra- and peritumoural expression of CD8, PD-1 and PD-L1 in pre-treatment specimens to determine their influence on tumour regression grade and survival. PD-1 and PD-L1 expression were considered positive (+) if ≥1% of all cells were stained positive, otherwise negative (-); densities of CD8+ cells were categorized as being high (Hi) or low (Lo) according to the median.
A negative PD-L1 expression in peritumoural cells predicted a poor tumour regression (RD 0.24 [95% CI 0.03-0.44], p=0.023). A positive PD-1 expressiont is required.Methylation, the most common chemical modification of cellular components such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, impacts biological processes including transcription, RNA processing, and protein dynamics. Although abnormal expression of methyltransferase can lead to various diseases including cancers, little is known about the relationship between methyltransferase and cancers. Here we aimed to understand the role of methyltransferase in cancer metastasis. We found that elevated methyltransferase-like 9 (METTL9) is closely associated with the acquisition of metastatic activity in human scirrhous gastric cancers. The stable knockdown of METTL9 via an shRNA vector technique in our original metastatic cells from scirrhous gastric cancer patients significantly inhibited migration and invasion. In metastatic cells, METTL9 protein is predominantly localized in mitochondria, and the METTL9 knockdown significantly reduced mitochondrial Complex I activity. METTL9 can be a candidate of molecular targets to inhibit peritoneal dissemination of scirrhous gastric cancers. This report is the first to describe the relationship between METTL9 and cancer metastasis.
The Remote Assessment and Dynamic Response (READyR) Program was developed in order to address the current lack of early-stage dementia care planning programs that assess the care needs of persons with dementia. The goal was to create a program informed by care values and ongoing ecologically valid data. The objectives of this study are to describe the development and design process of the READyR Program, and to evaluate the utility of the READyR Program for identifying dementia-related care needs.
A prototype of the web-based READyR Program tool was first created using digital activity data that were collected by previous studies using a platform of multimodal sensors installed in the homes of older adult couples with and without dementia. Digital activity data were then mapped onto potential care values (e.g., safety & autonomy) to create a values-based needs assessment that is tailored to the individual care dyad. Next, evaluation of the READyR Program by 11 professional dementia care coordinators again insight into the values-based care needs of persons with early-stage dementia. Clinical Trials Registration Number NCT04542109.
We aim to develop, disseminate and implement a minimum data set, known as a core outcome set, for future male infertility research.
Research into male infertility can be challenging to design, conduct and report. Evidence from randomized trials can be difficult to interpret and of limited ability to inform clinical practice for numerous reasons. These may include complex issues, such as variation in outcome measures and outcome reporting bias, as well as failure to consider the perspectives of men and their partners with lived experience of fertility problems. Previously, the Core Outcome Measure for Infertility Trials (COMMIT) initiative, an international consortium of researchers, healthcare professionals and people with fertility problems, has developed a core outcome set for general infertility research. Now, a bespoke core outcome set for male infertility is required to address the unique challenges pertinent to male infertility research.
Stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, allied healthcare professionals, scientists, researchers and people with fertility problems, will be invited to participate.
