How to Get a Replacement Key For Car
When it's time to purchase a replacement key for your vehicle the cost is contingent on the type of key you own. You can either contact a locksmith or visit your local dealership.
The dealer is the best option if you have a basic or transponder key. They can use your VIN number to retrieve the code and pair the key to your car.
Lost Keys
To avoid the stress that comes with losing your car keys, make backups and store them safely. If that's not feasible, the next best option is to purchase a keyfinder tag or one of the Bluetooth car key finders that are available. This will give you a few more days to look for your keys thoroughly (they usually turn up) or at the very minimum getting an exchange from your dealer.
If you have a traditional metal key, the best option is to contact your local locksmith who will drive to where your car is and create a replacement on the spot, even when they don't have the original. You'll be charged about $20 for a new traditional car key.
Contact your dealer if your vehicle is equipped with a transponder. The type of key you have is an embedded chip that sends an individual code to your car when it is near, helping to keep the vehicle safe from theft and other security hazards. The dealer must modify the key in order to make it function properly. This procedure can take several hours and can cost around $200.
Some newer cars have key fobs that can lock and unlock the car door as well as control other features of your car. They are extremely convenient, but can be a pain to lose! You can purchase a replacement fob for your car on the internet, but it could cost more than if you went to your local locksmith, and they'll need to program the fob to work with your specific car.
You could also visit your car dealer and ask them to replace your lost fob. However, you'll have to prove ownership. The cost will be higher than if it was performed by an automotive locksmith. However, they do have access to the same database as the manufacturer, so it's not impossible to get a new key from them. If you choose to go this route, it's important to compare the prices of your local locksmith to theirs.
Broken Keys
It can be a major problem if your key is damaged in the lock. Fortunately, there are ways to remedy this problem without having to buy a new key.
First, take out the broken part with a pair needle-nosed pliers. They are available in the form of pliers in the tool section of many hardware stores. You can also make use of a pair of tweezers that have a natural opening large enough to accommodate the blade of the key.
Be careful not to apply too excessive pressure. Applying too much pressure will only cause the break to worsen. Make sure to apply a little grease on the outside of the key to reduce friction when putting it into the lock. You can purchase a lubricant spray made specifically designed for car keys or coat the key's end with WD-40.
A car dealer or locksmith can also make a replacement key. But, you'll need to present a valid photo ID and proof of ownership before the dealer is able to issue the new key. The dealer will also have to connect the computer chip with your vehicle, which could take several weeks.
The last thing to mention is that some keys require to be coded prior to being able to be used with your vehicle. If your key broke while you were trying to start or open your car, you'll need to take it back to the dealer in order to be coded.
In general the cost to have a key replaced varies from one brand to the next manufacturer, but it's generally in the range of $100-$200. The majority of people go to their vehicle dealer, because it's a simple and cost-effective process. You might want to visit the dealership of the manufacturer in the case of a unique or high-end vehicle. In these cases you'll likely need to have your car transported to the dealer and provide proof of ownership before they can issue an alternative key. In certain instances this is covered by the warranty for your vehicle.
Transponder Keys
If your car is manufactured within the recent 20 years or so most likely it has a transponder keys (also known as a "chip" key). The key's head includes a transponder within it. When the key is put into the ignition an antenna ring emits radio frequency energy. This chip responds by generating an identification code. This code is transmitted to the vehicle's immobilizer, and If the correct code is present then the engine will be able to start.
If the correct code does not exist the immobilizer will be deactivated and stop the vehicle from starting. Transponder keys aid in preventing car theft by providing an additional layer of security. It's also why it is important to get your car keys replaced by an expert locksmith who is experienced with working with different auto manufacturers' anti-theft systems.
Many people think that their dealer is the only place they can obtain a transponder key. While it's true that the dealership does have the equipment needed, a professional locksmith can create a transponder key less money and provide a more convenient service generally.
Beishir Lock and Security carries the largest selection of transponder keys for many different automobiles. We can program and replace your existing transponder, remote flip key, or FOBIK keys. We can even make an entirely new key for your vehicle from scratch, if required.
It is important to be aware that if you're using a non-transponder key for your car, it is not possible to upgrade to a transponder key because the built-in anti-theft mechanism will not allow this. If you're worried about your car getting stolen, it's recommended that you purchase a transponder.
It's essential to choose the best lock for your vehicle when it comes to security. Locksmiths can assist you with any kind of lock. However, if you're looking to add an extra layer of security to your vehicle, it's worth investing in the key transponder.
Remote Fobs
A lot of cars today have remote fobs that let drivers open doors, trunks and tailgates, and some can even start the car. These tiny wireless devices send radio signals to the vehicle and are powered by batteries. If the fob's battery fails it can cause the device to become useless.
The majority of these remotes come with casings that can be opened easily. After you have opened the case, you'll require a replacement battery. Fortunately, the majority of these batteries are readily accessible in auto parts stores and some supermarkets.
Reassembling the key fob is necessary after you have replaced the battery. With car key and remote replacement with a flat blade, carefully pry the fob open in various places to prevent breaking the shell. The fob should be resnapped and then test the buttons. If everything is working then you're done!
However, if the fob isn't working, the problem may be more serious than a damaged battery. It could have lost its program, and the locksmith or dealer may be required to fix it.
Fobs usually have a button that may be used to reset their programming. It's generally a quick process, but it varies according to the model and make of the vehicle. The key fob needs to be "programmed again" to transmit the digital identification code to the car's onboard computers. This process is different for each model and year. It usually involves holding levers or buttons while triggering the power.
Some retailers, such as locksmiths and auto parts stores can program fobs from aftermarket stores bought online. Yu from CR warns, however, that these fobs can be difficult to fix and may not work properly. If you decide to purchase remote keys from a third party vendor ensure that the seller is trustworthy and go through the fine print to determine whether the fob is required to be programmed by a dealer. Certain retailers, for instance, Audi dealerships, require you to visit them to have a third-party fob programed.
