This investigation provides a promising strategy for rationally designing high-efficiency metal electrocatalysts with hierarchical multi-dimensional nanostructures for OER.A pectin-rich dietary fiber from sisal waste (P-SF), containing 11.8% pectin, was produced by a sequential enzymatic-ultrasonic process. P-SF was effective in adsorbing Pb2+ from aqueous solution with a maximum adsorption amount of 184 mg g-1. Adsorption isotherms were fitted well by the Langmuir equation, and the adsorption kinetics could be described by a pseudo-second-order model. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy suggested that Pb2+ was adsorbed by P-SF via ion exchange, complexation and mineral precipitation. selleck Dietary supplementation with 10% (w/w) P-SF in basal feed led to a significant decrease in Pb2+ in the brain, liver and kidney. P-SF has greater in vivo efficacy of Pb2+ removal as compared to commercial soybean dietary fiber. The reduction of brain Pb2+ level by P-SF was as effective as by a Pb2+ excretion drug. These findings suggested that P-SF has a great potential to be used as a dietary supplement to cope with Pb2+ poisoning.Acquired multidrug resistance in tumors is a big challenge in cancer therapy. As an important physical stimulus in the tumor microenvironment, elevated interstitial fluid pressure has been reported to inhibit drug delivery and promote metastasis in solid tumors. However, the direct influence of this fluid pressure on anticancer drug resistance remains unclear. Here, we develop a pressurized in vitro circulating tumor cell (CTC) culture platform for anticancer drug screening. By using human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231, we find that doxorubicin resistance can be increased by up to 2.5 times under 30 mmHg culture condition, through ABCC1 overexpression that reduces intracellular doxorubicin concentration. A similar chemoresistance change is also observed in clinical metastatic circulating tumor cells samples. These findings provide a new insight into the chemoresistance mechanism of metastatic human breast cancer cells and elucidate the significance of abnormal hydrostatic pressure in cancer progression.Fe32+δGe33As2 and Fe32+δ'Ge35-xPx are quasi-binary intermetallic compounds that possess a rare variant of intergrowth-type crystal structure, which is a combination of the column shaped Co2Al5 and MgFe6Ge6 structure type blocks. The compounds are antiferromagnets with the Néel temperatures around 125 K. Neutron powder diffraction experiments on the samples with δ≈ 0.1, δ'≈ 0.5 and x≈ 3 reveal commensurate magnetic ordering of low symmetry in both compounds and a non-monotonic change in the intensities of magnetic reflections. On the other hand, temperature dependence of the hyperfine fields obtained from 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy indicates a gradual, monotonic increase in local magnetic fields upon cooling. We interpret these results as a spin reorientation within the Co2Al5-type block of the crystal structure, with the possible formation of a non-collinear magnetic order at low temperatures. Between the compounds, the reorientation occurs at significantly different temperatures, however the resulting magnetic structures themselves are similar as well as the average values of the magnetic moments and the hyperfine fields.A series of complexes with low-energy FeII to TiIV metal-to-metal charge-transfer (MMCT) transitions, Cp2Ti(C2Fc)2, Cp*2Ti(C2Fc)2, and MeOOCCp2Ti(C2Fc)2, was investigated using solvatochromism and resonance Raman spectroscopy (RRS) augmented with time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations in order to interrogate the nature of the CT transitions. Computational models were benchmarked against the experimental UV-Vis spectra and B3LYP/6-31G(d) was found to most faithfully represent the spectra. The energy of the MMCT transition was measured in 15 different solvents and a multivariate fit to the Catalán solvent parameters - solvent polarizability (SP), solvent dipolarity (SdP), solvent basicity (SB), and solvent acidity (SA) - was performed. The effect of SP indicates a greater degree of electron delocalization in the excited state (ES) than the ground state (GS). The small negative solvatochromism with respect to SdP indicates a smaller dipole moment in the ES than the GS. The effect of SB is consistent with charge-transfer to Ti. Upon excitation into the MMCT absorption band, the RRS data show enhancement of the alkyne stretching modes and of the out-of-plane bending modes of the cyclopentadienyl ring connected to Fe and the alkyne bridge. This is consistent with changes in the oxidation states of Ti and Fe, respectively. The higher-energy transitions (350-450 nm) show enhancement of vibrational modes consistent with ethnylcyclopentadienyl to Ti ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT). The RRS data is consistent with the TDDFT predicted character of these transitions. TDDFT suggests that the lowest-energy transition in Cp2Ti(C2Fc)2CuI, where CuI is coordinated between the alkynes, retains its FeII to TiIV MMCT character, in agreement with the RRS data, but that the lowest-energy transitions have significant CuI to Ti character. For Cp2Ti(C2Fc)2CuI, excitation into the low-energy MMCT absorption band results in selective enhancement of the symmetric alkynyl stretching mode.Obesity is associated with increased serum leptin level, endothelial dysfunction and angiogenesis. In vitro studies have shown that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) synthesis is increased by leptin. Animal studies revealed the effectiveness of Plantago supplementation treatment of obesity. The study aim was to evaluate the effect of Plantago major supplementation on serum leptin and VEGF blood concentration, endothelial dysfunction and angiogenesis in obese women. Seventy-two obese women received oral Plantago major supplement (Plantago group, n = 35) or placebo (placebo group, n = 37) for 12 weeks. At baseline and after completion, anthropometric and body composition measurements were performed, and blood samples were collected. Serum concentrations of leptin, VEGF-A, adiponectin, tumour necrosis factor α and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule have been determined. At completion, the leptin level was higher in the Plantago group (39 781.55 ± 20 360.73 pg ml-1) compared to both the baseline (36 138.
